I was attached to USCG Station Depoe Bay in the 80's and have piloted an MLB through "The Hole in the Wall" hundreds of times. Was there things that captain could have done better?....Sure, but there is no way around it, no matter how good of a pilot you are or how well you time it, sometimes you get caught by an out of series swell or a rogue wave. In that tight dogleg, it's all about timing and try as you might, you can't control when the ocean is going to sneak one in on you. The captain did a good job of getting the boat straightened out and back in the harbor safely. Armchair captain's can talk all day long about how they'd have done this and done that better, but until you've been sitting in the Depoe Bay channel at low tide with heavy seas coming directly out of the West.....it's all just talk.
I just subscribed. That’s awesome footage you got there! Narrow channel and rough seas don’t go together very well. Even small waves have the power to turn a boat sideways!
I take that charter company a lot. They are usually very skilled. Strange. Most captains ride the wave in. They sit and wait for a wave, when they ate near the top, they floor it and ride right in
Very scary. I have a lot of respect for any captains who navigate our Oregon coast. Very very treacherous waters around here. But so glad to call it my home
I've been there and I couldn't imagine a boat of any size being able to enter this bay. Do you know that the fishing scene in one flew over the koocos nest was filmed there.
I've been to Depoe Bay many times growing up. Mostly to go whale watching which is offered at the Bay. Depending on the weather, the waves can get so rough that I've literally gone airborn for about a second or two from the boat going up and down. If you get seasick easily, it's not recommended. If you go, remember to hold on right to the rails and don't lean over them. I made that mistake once and almost went overboard; almost gave my mother and the skipper a heart attack.
I live in Oregon and have been here many times...It's so Fucking Narrow around that Bridge and you better Hope no one is coming the other way.....🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Probably the worst combination of outflow current + a wave overtaking the outflow just as he was entering the channel. You notice he gunned the throttle during the outflow, and once _that_ current stabilized, here comes a breaker right over it when the pilot has the boat throttled back. Where the wave and neutral current meet the rudder can't really steer because the net current is 0. So that breaker was able to push him off the rhumb line with no resistance, like wind shear in an airplane.
Nothing like the experience I had a Depot Bay......we when out whale watching but got called back early because of high wind and waves....when you are out there on that ocean and you really get to look at how small the hole is.....I think we had a worse day and a seasoned captain....he threaded the eye of the needle...my youngest son was nervous, my older one would have climbed up on the bow if they had let him....he was used to sailing on the Columbia River at Hood River so he was used to the boat going sideways.....
First time i crossed the bar into depoe i followed a very experienced retired captain and was terrified, but had faith in the captain and followed him in. It is a wonderful place to pull in for the night. you just find a vacant slip and no one bothers you for moorage or anything. I stopped in two more times and loved it, it is like a carnival ride. It is over so quick, not like girabaldi where you toss your cookies going in and coming out cause it is such a long entrance. i found it easy because you can follow the range day boards on shore. once i was in trouble because it was kind of rough and foggy. i was lucky to find a whale watcher boat and he led me right to the bar and it was amazing how when you get there the fog goes away and it is like a pond on a golf corse a whole different world on the other side of the bridge. and beer and pizza.
Nice crossing! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.
Jennifer, a very interesting video. Thank you for posting it. This can be an extremely hazardous entrance, as your video shows. The Endeavor inbound here lost its steerageway due to overtaking swells. Very dangerous...people have died here because of dangerous sea conditions. Fortunately no one was injured here, although the owner's wallet will be a LOT lighter. One suggestion: you might want to edit your title, as the proper name of the bay is "Depoe Bay".
Used to be stationed there at the Coast Guard station and gotta say, that channel is a bitch to maneuver sometimes. Even we had some pretty close calls on occasion! Glad they made it in okay.
Wrong...u want to stay directly in the back of a wave... but you need a lot of power to do it...if you’re surfing a wave there’s a good chance you’re going to broach it...
Your right! That's what I was trying to say but I didn't state it well. Thank you for clarifying my thoughts. We were in a boat where someone didn't stay behind a wave coming in to Newport Oregon and were almost swamped. Luckily my husband reached around his father and pushed the throttle to full, pushed his dad out of the way and swung us back inside the jetties. Close call.
When approaching a inlet like these we slow down and try to speed up behind the wave,he had enough time to put to reverse and hold until the wave passes as the wave was not breaking.Echo vs common sense and Echo always loose, lucky this time!At 0:23 he should hold and sits on the wave and speed as the wave go passes the centre of the boat,we do this all the time!
Mostly bad timing, should have waited outside the mouth, till that wave that made him broach, had just passed the bow and then gunned it to maintain steerage while not running up over the top of the swell. taking a following swell on the stern, while heading into current is asking to broach. Kudos to the helmsman, it could have been much worse.
Gotta be something wrong with either propulsion or steering. The boat just wallowed once a wave passed. Very little forward motion, lousy heading control. What was wrong?
+Sheila chambers No, they were stuck at the trough while riding the half, when a wave comes in theres a suction that will get a hold of the bottom, they were using too much throttle and should have done reverse when they weren't getting anywhere.

That part of the central Oregon coast is some of the most beautiful shoreline.
That's pucker factor 10 right there. If you've ever been there you pretty much say no no no.
Gotta love the "Oh My Word" lines..lol and then the cheers that follow. That entrance is a tough nut to crack sometimes.
If you have the power , do not let waves pass you , ride right behind

I’m on the west side of Vancouver Island. We have the same rugged coastline.
Boy that’s a narrow channel!! There’s no room for error or for surprises. He did a great job of getting himself out of that pickle!
It's the world's smallest harbor. So 'no room for error' is an understatement.
Oh my word!
ON THE SAME BOAT!:
Depoe Bay, rocking' and rollin'
Thank you for linking this!!!!!!!
Jack Nicholson would be proud!
That is a super narrow passage!
Never having piloted any boat ever, I can still give my "expert" opinion on what any captain should have done, in any situation and in any location.
Yes you can! 😂 You therefore accept any sh*t that's going to chucked at you as a result of said opinion.
Wow that Bar is crazy tiny!
I've been there and I couldn't imagine a boat of any size being able to enter this bay. Do you know that the fishing scene in one flew over the koocos nest was filmed there.
The fishing secene was filmed in Newport 20 miles south of depot bay
@@MichaelGregg-wc2bg many parts of it were filmmed there. Apparently you haven't seen the movie or you would know that.

Great job by the Captain of the Endeavor... you did a superb job!
Rediculous! He hesitated when he had a clear shot. If that was my vessel, I'd fire him immediately. You know nothing.
Brings back memories, used to work at Dpoe Bay Fish Co.
The fish miss you Dan
Why did he let that wave over take him at the transom...no wonder he got pushed off his line...why?

I have to assume that he had some mechanical difficulty that prevented him from keeping his boat in the correct spot. Either steering or thrust.
This place does have one of the nastiest approaches I have ever seen

And people think Haulover is something big
Haulover has T+A - it's a joke - plus warm water if you swim - this here - not so much.
haul over is overated. TBH everybody can afford boats there most of them are retarded af when it comes to operating boats.

I'd better read the comments to see what good advice the captains of various rigid inflatables have for this professional captain.

Nice job Cappy, sorry I missed this, I was across the street at the candy store, best taffy ever..
Does anyone out there have any photos of Captain Bill Wagner of the Debbie Linn back in the 70's?
Красавца!!!!!
Holy CRIKEES!!! 😳
I wonder why the opening is so tight? Did someone forget the keys to the dynamite locker?
I've often wondered that myself. At low tide that channel can't be more than 30' wide at the waterline. No margin for error.
You can see the Captain waited for the correct wave pattern at the wrong place and entered in the middle of a wave set, both errors at this entrance.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!!!!
Chris, what do you think of this ? more speed i would imagine would help this guy not broach.
notice how the people not actually there can talk big about how that would never happen to them
Cindy Harding Yup. He let the waves catch up & move him instead of keeping the pace. He broke the #1 Rule of bar crossing.
Cindy Harding - yeah well I can still see a idiot and didn’t need to be there...
Shouldn't of stalled rite at the entrance but those sneaker waves are sometimes hard to avoid
Used to be stationed there at the Coast Guard station and gotta say, that channel is a bitch to maneuver sometimes. Even we had some pretty close calls on occasion! Glad they made it in okay.
Wow ..but oregon is beautiful state
When ever crossing a barr never let the waves get in front of you!
Wrong...u want to stay directly in the back of a wave... but you need a lot of power to do it...if you’re surfing a wave there’s a good chance you’re going to broach it...

He's got it..... He's got it....He ain't got it.
I'd gladly wait for slack tide or dock elsewhere. This is ridiculous.
didnt look to be going fast enough in the early stages? more gas capt!
Displacement hull!

Big balls in the wheelhouse 😅😅😅 1:09
You mean running into the bar?
i guess that this boat would need twice the horsepower to cross safer that inlet ........
Unfortunate timing to land in the trough of that ebb at an entrance like that! Needed to power through that peak swell just before but missed it.
Ride the swell
wowwwwwwww ......... not an easy inlet at all ............
Shouldn't the captain use more power to push through? He does not seem to have directional control of the boat.
Gotta be something wrong with either propulsion or steering. The boat just wallowed once a wave passed. Very little forward motion, lousy heading control. What was wrong?
What are you doing cheswick, turn starboard, that way.
Oh my woooord! Gee gosh golly willikers! Whoops, pardon my French.
This is pathetic. That boat has plenty of horsepower. Whomever was at the helm is clueless! The people onboard are lucky the surf was small that day.
Well that looks completely ridiculous.
.badassss.
They need more POWER to stay on top of the swells, get better control, they used too little throttle & were being controlled by those swells.
+Sheila chambers No, they were stuck at the trough while riding the half, when a wave comes in theres a suction that will get a hold of the bottom, they were using too much throttle and should have done reverse when they weren't getting anywhere.
Wyte B applauding like its for her entertainment... 😒
All the down votes? You don’t known how to punch the bar.
Really dumb skipper there. Almost lost it and possibly lives, too
I could go through this inlet with my eyes closed and just use my senses to make it.
Where you from Peter?

Terrible, follow the wave, keep the bow full, this vessel would have had ample power, simple crossing in light conditions
Damage
The lady say oh my word ruined the video
Americans man, what are you gonna do. At least it wasn't the usual "Oh my gaaawd"
this has to be a steel hull vessel....otherwise that hit would have taken the bottom right out...
The Titanic was steel. Ice or Rock vs. steel hull= steel loses.
it 50' delta. In my opinion the best fiberglass fishing boats made in the seventies.
Poor performance. Use your horse power dude!
Oh my word!
