deftones is the only band to consistently give me chills when i heard their songs for the first time. my favorite band of all time for sure
While they intentionally leave most of thier song meanings open ended, It always seemed to me this song was about being in a relationship where you are the one doing everything and the other party is not near the same level of dedication.

As for lyrics, Deftones is one of the only bands I don't really focus on lyrics for. They tend to be more of a vibe than something to ascribe true meaning to in a relational aspect.

The song is about the struggles with addiction. The waves keep sucking you in and you drown. If I stay down would you swim down with me. Is that what you want? One trying to swim to shore but the waves keeps pulling you back in and you start to drown together. It's haunting sound gives it that edge of emotion and pain you feel when consumed by an addiction.

To answer your question about the lyrics - this song is about trust. "If like, you should sink down beneath, i'll swim down. Would you?" He's using the visual of two people hugging a plank of debris in the open ocean as a metaphor. He knows he'd risk himself to save the other person, but isn't sure if he could trust the other person to do the same thing for him
