- Just before lockdown Matt took delivery of a new BMW M135i xDrive and indended on filming the collection and first driving impressions, however for obvious reasons that could not happen. Now that restrictions have been slightly eased we thought that it was time to shoot an update on what the M135i is really like to live with.
The BMW M135i is the current range topper in the BMW 1 Series line up, it features a 2 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine with over 300hp. The power is put to the road via an 8 speed automatic gearbox and four wheel drive.

Great review mate,I've had my white m135i for 2 months got rid of all grey parts on car for gloss black grille,gloss black spoiler,gloss black maxtondesign front splitter,side skirts,rear diffuser,front side aero flicks,m4 wing mirror covers and all over gloss black emblems,the car now looks sensational.would agree about seats being amazingly comfortable you can also tighten or slacking boosters around hips also for fast b road driving

As a long term Audi/VW customer who recently jumped ship to the new M135i (one year old press car with all the toys!) it was great to see your excellent review Matt/Rhys. After test driving the new A3 and Series 1, it was the quality of the interior that clinched it for me. I have the alcantara seats which I agree are great and I believe are better than having leather. My car has the heated steering wheel and head up display which aren't even options on the S3. My only disappointment was the lack of configurability of the virtual display which is better on my Audis, although the iDrive infotainment is great. I have Auto Android working with the iDrive 7, I have seen reports that it only works with Apple car play.
Finally a fair review, enjoyed it a lot! My white M135i is delivered Wednesday afternoon, so just 2 more days! Can’t wait! I wanted a cool looking high powered car, and fast under all circumstances. Didn’t like the A35, S3 is too old, and there was the M135i. One testdrive and I knew this was it.
Green Mills It’s what I hoped it would be; a seriously fast hatchback with a Jekyll (press Sport) and Hyde (press Comfort) character, safe and fast under all conditions with it’s AWD. And because of the LSD on the front axle there is soooo much traction out of corners! The limits of the grip are much further then your brain can grasp. Perfect ergonomics, good seats, only negative things are the fuel consumption, but that is mostly my own fault ;-), and the exhaust could be louder (thank you European regulations 💀). Going to fit an Remus sports-exhaust system on it. K
maintence was expensive?
Just picked mine up. Went into local BMW, had a test drive on a Saturday and they had a cancelled order. Misano Blue with tech pack and Pro Pack. Only problem was I had to pick it up within the week, but it had a £5k discount so no complaints :-)
I just bought a brand new one today, cannot wait to pick it up now, hopefully not too much of a wait 😊

I’m in Ireland where cars are super expensive (base model in white €55k) so mine is coming with very little options, so hoping the basic sound is liveable with from the stereo. Im also on 18 inch rims, the 19s jacked the price of the car up by €5,500!

Hi Jonny, ordered a white one as well, this Wednesday at 15:00 it’s showtime at the dealer for me! Waited for months due to BMW factory closing...but now it’s almost here. Good luck with the (long) wait, I am sure it’s worth it!
I have had one since January having owned an M140i and I totally agree with you. Not only do I feel its more planted but it is so much more comfortable and practical. Yes you don’t buy an M140i for practicality and you can have a bit more fun with it but 99% of the times that car is pointless in my opinion.
Good to hear you got one too! I've done a couple more things to mine since I got it, I have a stage 1 tune exhaust and I have recently lowered it and the car is just fabulous. I'm taking it up to the snowy mountains soon and can't wait! #doeverything car

You obviously can't drive one well enough to appreciate why it's so much fun. You stick with your FWD (99% of the time) safe, predictable, Mini-in-a-sensible-dress son.
@@DjNikGnashers if you read my comment I clearly wrote the M140i is more fun but my point is you will enjoy that car if you have the tail sliding out. Most people will probably crap themselves if that happens anyways but how often will you be doing that on British roads? On top of that it is impractical, the ride is firm, cant put the power down and the looks are outdated. Besides the engine which I agree is a masterpiece it does not make sense hence why I said that the majority of the time it is pointless. Have you ever asked yourself why other German manufacturers have not stuck a massive engine into their hatchbacks? They have more powerful cars yes but not without sorting out the drive train. My comments are based on ownership of the car not just a test drive. I suggest you do the same son.

You mean a 2l turbo like 99.9 percent of all ''hothatches'' let's be honest, compared to an m140i this is peanuts, It's a generic, soulless car. I'll take a second hand 135/140i above this fart machine every day of the year and be cheaper off also.

If I wanted a predictable, safe, uneventful, copycat box on wheels, I'd have bought an S3. I wouldn't buy a MINI in a sensible dress.
M140i is a car for people who love excitement, fun, and slightly unpredictable danger (ie a blokes car). Even better with 455bhp ;-))))
Nice review; had mine since September and just over 3k miles driven. There is some FWD torque steer before the 4WD kicks in when you push it a little if I compare to my previous daily 335D xDrive which had a fair bit more torque. In all it is not quite as good an implementation of xDrive from a handling standpoint. My other observation would be the gearbox, no longer from ZF it’s good but not as crisp changing as my 3-series was.
As in most modern cars throttle mapping across the driving modes is a pain in the neck and the jump between comfort / sport is annoying - I’d much rather have a consistent map in comfort / sport. Eco that’s fine.
Don’t think it’s quite as quick as a M2 as you propose on UK twisty roads; I have a Cayman 718 GTS which is not that much quicker than a M2 and the 718 leaves the M135i for dust from a chassis and handling standpoint (engine is not comparable).
BTW you can also turn down the artificial engine noise in iDrive settings.
But it’s a pretty planted drive and in real world quick enough. Nice cabin, lovely controls, comfortable seats as you say and practical day to day. Pretty pleased with mine.
Yes ditto torque steer, just got mine and was quite alarming when it jumped half a lane when I first booted it !
@@ravington666 It's a great little car though in a lot of respects. I did get rid of mine though and went for a 4-series 2-door for commuting, didn't get active dampers but it handles well and one of that pesky torque steer.

Would you track it after changing tyres suspension fluids .etc.? How does the engine temp hold up?
It's down for a test drive, I have narrowed it down to the M135i, smashing looking car all the power I need, looks and sounds spectacular or the M235i Gran coupe, a design marval in my opinion but not as beautiful in the sound department
We’ve just ordered a M235i. Absolutely smashing car. The internet hasn’t been kind to it but I feel she’ll end up surprising a few of the die hard fans.

Great detailed review. What was your fuel economy so far? I'm looking at buying one, as well as probably my first BMW, so I wish to know if possible, just to know what to expect. TY
I was getting around mid 30's in this so I think it would be reasonable to expect around that, on longer journeys you can increase that number to high 30's to low 40's.
There was already plenty of awd hot hatches you could buy before this came to the market, Golf R, S3, A35, RS3 etc. There is no theatre to them and the awd is as safe as houses so they are too safe, the M140i was scary because if you got it wrong in the wet it could kill you haha.
Did your tech pack include the enhanced Bluetooth, wireless charging and WiFi hotspot?
Yes it did include those options.

What fuel consumption do you get with the M135 in every day driving conditions?
Jaco Van-Der-Walt low 30’s. Edges towards hi 30’s on a run (after 6,000 miles)
My overall average is 32mpg, on a long run however I have had high 40's.
Howard Noble I have the M140i and I struggle to get more than 23MPG with normal everyday driving.
RybrookTV will have to take it for a test drive then when the I am in the position get rid of my M140i
1 liter (euro 98) for every 11 km...but there is just 2000 miles on this car so I think it will even improve a bit.
Currently own the M140i. Never really given the new M135i a second glance. But…! Saw this exact model/spec/colour at the BMW Shrewsbury dealer yesterday and I’m picking it up on Monday. Looks bute imo.

it’s a four pot that shares its engine with a mini, it’s seats and interior look mint, but that bumper is a disgrace

Bmw isnt about comfort or practicality ! These are no arguments. First its UGLY. It simply is. Its slower than previous generation especially high speed. Bmw sold its soul for the masses. This car now suits a woman, its unisex: more sales. Before no woman bought a 1 series
So lets get this arguments right. 1: Design is subjective - I had both the m140i F21 and the new one and I like the new Design more. But since its purely subjective its no argument. Its actually as fast as the old M135i f21. 2: Its slower then the m140 but why do you compare it to the m140? If you do why don't you compare it to an 10 year old m5? It will be slower. So no argument again. 3: Yeah maybe they did but did you think about that it is a company and it is there to make money? So they will produce whatever the customers want. And did you ever thought about Regulations like CO2 emission rates and so on? If you didn't do it..maybe you will figure out why they had to do a 4 Zyl and why they had to put a OPF filter on it and so on.
