My personal opinion is that the traveler didn't try to leave to run away from the fight, but to run towards it. The shockwave from the blast when the traveler is that to close to the city would destroy both so the only sensible choice was to go further away from the city in case we failed to stop Eramis. Traveler was ready to sacrifice himself just like Rasputin. "More than a weapon" is not just about Rasputin, it's also about the traveler.
