This was me copying atp serves. Once I started trying wta emulation, a lot of my fundamental issues resolved naturally. I tried plenty of them, even Gorges lol, but play the most consistent with Igas. It just worked for me. I’m a pretty athletic 4.0 who probably could manage some of the atp motions but why force things that aren’t necessary at the rec level.

in general women often have purer technique in most sports. why? because they dont have the physicall power to brute force technical mistakes, so they have to perfect it more to get an edge

Nick, I had a Kyrgios-like rocking motion in the past (big leg separation) on my pinpoint serve. Yes bigger coil but guess what, I had a leftward approach to the ball because I couldn't get out of the big coil like you said in the video. And unfortunately there are many coaches on the internet preaching this "big coil/shoulder turn, chest facing backfence" theory 😷
Now I have just small leg separation before the serve starts, and hence the coil is much smaller (elbow to the trunk instead of behind the trunk). the serve is much cleaner and faster than the old big-coil serve. I am pretty young (below 30 years old) and go to the gym a lot, yet my fitness can't help me get out of the big coil, let alone older players with more physical limitation. Your experience, observation and understanding of the game across all levels is second-to-none!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Going to the gym a lot won’t necessarily help (and may hinder) getting out of a big coil explosively… Building up those Type I fibers (primarily through plyometric exercises and training) might get you the ability to use more of your potential coil, but obviously this might not be an investment you think is worth making (although it’s worth noting that Type I fibers are durable into middle/later age, and I believe also are highly protective in old age against injuries/poor mobility/etc)… and I suppose it may conflict with your other sport/fitness goals too.

Great vid. I’m happy Pliskova is getting some good results again after a difficult few years. For a long time she and Svitolina were the two best players to have not yet won a slam. Would love to see her make one more deep run at a major again. She’s certainly the Ace Queen.

Great video. Brian Gordon did research on this and he said there is an acceptable margin of "error", and it is OK to be up to 20 degrees below the shoulder line with the elbow. Any more than that and it starts to affect the way a player comes out of the trophy position. Karolina is well within that margin, as per your first video of her at 4:22 (camera angles can be extremely deceptive, as per the one you used to demonstrate the low elbow). Check out what Tsitsipas does with his elbow as he launches from trophy - it really does hurt just to watch, and yet he has a bomb but that must be biomechanically wrong.

This list was interesting. I completely agree with you!
Firstly, no one besides Rybakina has even one slam on that list… which to me to my second realization…
Serena’s is the greatest server not simply for the aces but her ability to serve well at will. I would be very interested to see a stat about number of aces when facing break point or serving out a big match.
Technically, serena is also versatile, she has a decent kick second serve, and can hit flat or slice. Everything ive said about serena I feel the same about roger, who is an amazing spot server. When it comes to greatness of the serve, its not gonna be about who aces the most or hits the hardest, and thats why I wouldn’t even put plsikova in the same box as serena when it comes to serving.

Great video on serves. While I agree with your general comments about copying ATP strokes, I am not sure I agree with your logic on WTA serve. While ATP pros are freaky athletic and not really copyable, I think WTA players are freaky athletic in their own ways. Pliskova's elbow is way above her wrist when serving. I don't know any rec players, male or female, has that kind of flexibility to build the lag.

If Goggle is even close, Goggle says that Karolina and Serena can hit almost 130 on their flats. I see most recreational players struggle to return serves in the 70s or 80s. If Karolina can hit the angles correctly, I wonder what is the minimum speed she can earn an ace against a WTA returner? (The rec speeds were from a PlaySight system.)

    • @elchanclascocina
      @elchanclascocina 6 місяців тому +1

Though I believe Pliskova and Serena may have reached 130mph serves, I think their higher consistent speeds are closer to 122mph. Thinking on angles, I've seen aces at 90mph in WTA with angles (mostly slices), while I've also seen aces at 100mph in ATP. Both are not the norm but they happen.

I was really intrigued about Pliskova and Rybakina's match at the Aussie Open last month. Two players of a similar height, their games virtually mirroring each other. Movement is about the same but I think Rybakina has a better transition game. This lack of quality net play hurt Pliskova and prevented her winning a major title. Her movement was suspect so she needed more than hitting hard from the baseline.
I loved the contrast on their serves. Almost a passing of the torch. But what intrigued me was Pliskova's more classic service motion, and Rybakina's more modern abbreviated service motion. Personally I prefer the classic motion because it looks nicer and smoother if done well.
Whereas Patrick Rafter, Andy Roddick, Ben Shelton, Rybakina etc etc etc, their serves are effective but not as nice to look at over and over again.

1000 is 100% more than 500. Interesting that you didn’t note one of the key features of her serve technique that differentiates her from other servers. She doesn’t pronate/long axis rotate past contact. This probably improves her accuracy. It can be a problem for rec players because it can be a symptom of holding on, but it demonstrates that long axis rotation past contact is not an absolute in the tennis serve. BTW, Serena and Kyrgios tend to be mixed, sometimes they do have long axis rotation past contact and sometimes they don’t. JMO, they vary it depending on how much they are trying to hit a spot.

@@bournejason66 Obviously you don’t know when the racquet drop occurs. I don’t believe he even shows Karolina’s racquet drop in this clip. Max racquet drop occurs when the player is driving up on the serve and right as the player leaves the ground. It is the moment of max shoulder external rotation as the racquet drops behind the serving shoulder. He does show his racquet drop at 6:58 with the wrist fully extended and you do see Kristyna’s racquet drop at the very end with the wrist fully extended.
