Finished the book just in time to watch this review ! I lost my dog last may very suddenly and tragically right before my final exams for university and I was feeling really alone and overwhelmed since for the past few years my dog was helping me overcome my mental health issues and the loss of two close family members (he was frankly the only reason that I was getting out of bed certain days). So in search for some companion and relatability to what I’m experiencing I came across this book. Although it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting , as I thought it would focus more on the feelings of grief and the companion of pets , I did enjoy it as the writer delved into topics that I never cared to think about before. Overall I think it was fairly unique and tried to do something interesting and it is unlike any I’ve read before.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience Annie. It’s humbling to read that a shared experience like grief makes us do things like this. Like you, it was the same reason I tried to find something - anything - hence this book - to deal with the loss of my cat.
Sounds an interesting book. Yes yes~~~lots of life lessons with our precious pets! Happy New Year filled with wonderful Fridays and all the other days too! ( i cannot quite catch the official word for your friday, maybe its an Aussie term?) 🎉🐶🐱📚 🌟
I ❤ the idea of Flaneur Friday! Sort of reminds me of Julia Cameron's idea of taking yourself out on an artist date. 🎨 As always so thoughtful and heartfelt. Thank you. This was also my top read of the year. ❤
Yes!! Exactly that. I loved Julia Cameron’s work and did her program myself some years back. This is why I started these “dates with myself” but I like the term Flâneur (maybe because I’m also learning French). 🤣
@@LifeLessonsFromBooksall the best with the French lessons. On the side note of books arriving at just the right moment- I picked up Time Shelter by Georgi Gospodinov about a flaneur named Gaustine. How uncanny. A word I don't usually notice now popping up everywhere. 😂
@@caseynluke 🤣 Love this!! (Now looking up about this book and I think I’m going to find it to read too. I love the idea of a Time Shelter. I think my house is that …..
Are Australians careless readers? I’m not sure, I’m not Australian neither wanna be, but some of my “flaneur” activities I’ve picked up while on the hustling are getting lost in the suburbs looking through the piles of books people are trying to get rid of by leaving them on the streets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne (perhaps the taste is different in WA or the NT 😅). I have found some Jewels in there, but that’s pretty rare, mostly I get romance novels and cookbooks, plenty of them. Maybe that's why you're chucking them out, or maybe that's what youse like to read? I don’t know. I keep meandering, loafing and paying attention. Love your work Helen, saludos!
Thank you!! It sounds like you’re a flâneur yourself. As for the question you ask, that’s a good one. I often thought of it myself. Why can’t I find decent books? Why are they all John Grisham and Liane Moriarty books?! If I see another cookbook…….😩Maybe people don’t read classics and literature anymore? Maybe if they do, they’re not willing to let them go? If I think to my own book shelves on Penguin and Vintage classics and literature, the only time they’ll leave this house would be when I’m long gone and someone is packing up my home to sell off. 🤣

What a cracking start to the year..yep definitely reserving this one..many interesting thoughts you pose re writers v readers..being both myself it's true..writers do purloin..but one hand washes the other I guess..love the thought of Flanneuressing..maybe it could become Government policy..Ps.. each Jan I hit my Big Book for the year to oil the wheels..am 100 pages into Ulysses..Holey Moley..what have I done!!!
Happy new year! Omg. Ulysses. That’s a huge read and one I admit that it’s unlikely I’ll read it because I fear it. It’s got a reputation for being a difficult book? Please give me your feedback once you’ve finished it. What did you think?
At 200 pages in I can say so far it's unreal..truly!! It breaks your view of literature and changes how you see the world...I have a book by an Australian called Clara Mason who breaks down each chapter..then it's easier. As for life lessons, this will be a tricky one because there so much detail..it's mind bending..I absolutely love it..the trick is to just give yourself to the process and go with it...
@ that’s a great way of reading this with a guide. I’ve put it down in my list of books to be read in my life and will set aside a time to devote to it only. It sounds like it’s a book that calls out for this. All the best with it!!!
Just added to my cart. Thank you.
Wonderful! Enjoy!!

Thank you Patricia. Happy new year to you too and wish you a great year of wonderful reading. (I’m calling the Fridays - Flâneur Friday (French!) 🤣)

It's such an intriguing concept isn't it? I've only just begun - its taking a bit to get into but it has my interest. 😊
I’ve reserved it at my library now. Thanks for the suggestion. 😊
