    I was a Designated Marksman with 3rd ID in 2005. I had an old school M14, but we just got upgraded versions of the M16A4 that had been heavily modified for DM use. Heavy, free floating barrels with better triggers and optics. I spent time on the range with in in Kuwait and found 600m was about the max range. After that it stared to get squirrelly. But, in October of 2005 we got into a firefight with the Maudi militia near a palm grove in Sadr City. We were up on a river bank. I had a nice elevated spot proned out across the back of one of the HMMWVs and had a spotter calling out targets. Some of the shots I took that day were well beyond 700m and I got confirmed hits farther than that. While I never got to see the aftermath, I did watch some of the fighters drop from the 5.56 rounds they caught. So I can tell ya, that Specific day under those conditions, it got the job done. RIP Spc Sergio Gudino KIA 25Dec 2005.

      Sounds like you had a M16A1 converted to the MK12 Mod O or Mod 1. I have a Mod 1 that will carry 77 grain S&B to 2850 FPS and go transonic past 1000 yards here in the mountains. The guns are incredibly capable!

    • @vlogfriendsutopia
      @vlogfriendsutopia 2 місяці тому +2

      @@thomasdalton7987 Yup. 357 Magnum from a 6 inch barrel can be around 900 FPE. 5.56 usually sits around 1,000. From a rifle, 357 Magnum can be ~1,700 FPE, hitting, and can be within 400 FPS of 308, using a 158 grain to the 308's 155. You could even chuck a 150 grainer at 2310 FPS from a rifle, though that's an overpressure round, and should only be used in rifles or large framed Rugers. That's 228 FPS short of 308 with a 5 grain lighter projectile, but also, a wider one. A 158 grain 357 Magnum projectile traveling at 2153 FPS from a rifle has the same TKO factor as a 155 grain 308 due to it's larger diameter.
      44 Mag is a step up even still, but won't shoot as flat as 357 Magnum.

    • @brianzimmerman4837
      @brianzimmerman4837 5 місяців тому +33

      Well... They really didn't have to take it out to 1000. A ballistics test is focused on the round, so you really don't have to take it out to distance. They could have done this with a series of increasing velocity hand loads to simulate the velocity of a given round at x distance, or done the same thing by firing the round through different barrel lengths. What 5.56 does out of a 10" barrel within 25 meters is what it will do out of a 16" at 250isb and out of a 20" at 300ish. We know how much velocity we're gonna lose at a given distance for different loads. At that point, it's just plug and play math.

    • @tylerc7336
      @tylerc7336 5 місяців тому +14

      @brianzimmerman4837 it's different, you have to consider the path of the bullet when that far away, it's going to be coming at a steeper angle instead of basically straight on when close up, it'll have different velocity by then, etc

    • @brianzimmerman4837
      @brianzimmerman4837 5 місяців тому +4

      @tylerc7336 Well, the angle of travel can be taken onto account with a ballistic calculator. The velocity of the round at a given barrel length distance can be taken into account with a velocity chart. Just have the different loadings, and fire them in sequence. Hell, make them in triplicate, do a chrono, block, then dummy test within 25 meters. It would have been easier, and the environment of the test would have been more controlled and repeatable.

    There's a lesson here that I'm not seeing anyone else mention here: WEAR YOUR DAMN PLATES. Every killshot taken here could have been stopped by Level III body armor. Maybe even Level IIIA at 700 (Not recommended). If you have a plate carrier, get good plates. We lost some Rangers in Mogadishu Somalia because they didn't take their plates.

    I am a CMP-USAMU Military Rifle Instructor assisting USAMU deliver SDM, TTT, and SAFS Training . I have used my SDMR build in NRA Long-Range Competition and find shooting this sort of rifle at 1000 yards and hitting where aimed is mostly about getting the correct hold for wind. Even shooting 80 grain Berger’s using an MOA wind constant of 10 just a 1 mph full value crosswind will displace bullet about 10 inches. So unless you have the skill to discern minuscule wind changes good hits with the 5.56 at 1000 yards is very difficult. I am US Distinguished Rifleman, as well as American High Power Rifleman in Long Range Award Winner but so far average score with a 5.56 at 1000 yards is just 94% on the NRA LR Target.

      yup...not sure if they mentioned their velocity, but a 77 gr Berger OTM leaving @ 2700 fps will move ~15" for every 1 mph of x-wind...
      so, a 5 mph gust or drop in wind means ~6 feet left or right miss!!
      A fair amount of luck involved, considering time-of-flight is almost 2 seconds...the wind can change a lot in that amount of time and over that distance.

    • @charlesludwig9173
      @charlesludwig9173 5 місяців тому +5

      @@ShastaBean interestingly enough, a shooter can use an MOA wind constant of 10 when shooting Mk262 from an M16A4 to 500 meters for good wind favors. Teaching the SDM course I find this constant is good though 600 yards although ballistics table suggest using an MOA constant of 8. In CMP EIC competition I use MOA wind constant of 10 at 300 yards shooting 77’s and a constant of 10 at 500/600 yards shooting 80 grain Berger bullets. Many years ago I shot a 200 yard miss in an EIC Match at Camp Atterbury and thus I thought there was no means for me to win the tournament. In the 300 prone rapid stage I adjusted for a 10 mph cross wind from a mid range reading and I shot a 99, then at 500 I I adjusted sight again using MOA constant of 10 and shot a 197. I still ended up with a poor score, I think 474 x 14 yet finished in second place for 8 leg points because I was only one of about 40 shooters who took wind reading at mid range rather than at firing point. Seemed to me perpendicular burms down range were changing the direction of wind and I was right about it. All other shooters lost a bundle of points at 300 and thus that put me back in the game unexpectedly. Fun stuff.

      @@charlesludwig9173 You have far more experience than I do. I've only scratched the surface on LR shooting. But a fair amount of time altering variables on the Berger & Hornady online calculators. Great tools!
      The range I go to is typically windy with it being gusty and swirling. I've factored the wind at the bench, only to walk out to 100 yard target and it's going the exact opposite direction. Really puzzling to figure out. Probably also affected by berms. When my anemometer goes from 4.2 to 12.7 every 3 seconds I do question how anyone can even make a predictable shot. Yesterday I stepped off the back porch and it was 1.1 to 7.6 and back again all within 5 seconds.
      I spent most of my adult life on the golf course and driving range, rather than the shooting range. But same thing - wind!!!
      I get it all worked out in my head, and aim a shot to start out over the water, then it flips direction in the middle of my downswing! & SPLASH!! haha!

Blood in the lung/chest cavity, a haemothorax requires a chest drain, which requires serious medical knowledge and skill and equipment. Even worse than that would be a haemopneumothorax - Blood and air in the chest cavity.

It was right on a dusk with sun behind us. It was that time of day when it is starting to get cold. We had just set up our OP, I then finished calling distance on and windage when and I said to send it. As it was a cold bore we expected to have to correct. So when I called it we both thought I had called it wrong.
    But the instructor told us that it was a correct call. I was a better shot coming up through the course, but he was luckier. I still remember the lesson we both learnt from the instructor that day; it's better to be lucky than good. Our instructor said that the enemy may not have the best training or the equipment, but Murphy can strike at any moment and the enemy can be lucky too. So train harder and make sure they don't get a chance to be lucky. Of coarse we could reach out beyond a 1000 easily, especially with the right equipment (not 556), but regardless of if we saw enemy or not, we made sure to make it almost impossible for the enemy to get lucky.

    You CAN "reach out and touch someone" to 1200 yds on a GOOD day!!! And for us who went through basic training and Infantry AIT in the late 80s, we not only had BRM but ARM as well, trained and qualified in ALL westher conditions and it sucked in GA and in the winters and falls.... We had to hit targets both stationary and moving that popped up moving forward and backwards and side to side at distances out to 800 meters. We had to do it with the M16A2s with iron sights, M60s and M240s as well and M249s and also at night. Not including qualifying with the LAW, MT4s, Dragons, TOWs and some of us Javelins.
    So when it comes to understanding ballastics of .556 and 7.62 rounds, stop thinking it's not possible to get out to 1k yds... It is!!

      I don’t think that’s the issue I think it’s more they wouldn’t be shooting at someone that far with 5.56 when there are better calibers that can be used.
      Me personally 5.56 wouldn’t go past 600 yards because I have a larger caliber for that.
      I live in a city so the probability of pretty everybody here shooting someone at even 500 yards is quite slim. If not none.
      Obviously war is different.
      Like I can easily shoot past 100 yards with my pistol but I’d rather switch to the 5.56 or 300 blk.
      Or even 308.
      Don’t have any AKs yet.
      But even with MY 600 yard cutoff I highly doubt I would even shoot past 200 yards.
      Unless I’m holed up somewhere but that’s a whole other topic.
      Point is there is better rounds to use then 5.56 past a certain yardage.

      There is a difference between "reachable" and "reliable".
      1000 meter shots are reachable with that round. Hell, a 22LR will travel more than a mile, there is no reason to think a 5.56 wouldnt also travel that far.
      The key however is at what distance do hits on stationary targets drop below a 95% hit rate? 80%? 50%?
      That is the real question. Yes, it will travel beyond "effective ranges" but when it comes to practical use there is a distance where taking a shot is statistically wasting ammo.

    I believe what happened to the ribs was the shock from the impact separated the Costal Cartilage from the rib bones at the Costochrondral junction.
    You have the Sternum center chest, then you have Costal Cartilage that runs from the Sternum to where you saw those "breaks", and that is where the Costochrondral Junction is, It's where the cartilage ends, and from there to the spine would be the actual rib bone.
    I've found that most people don't realize that the majority of the chest area back to where your sides start, isn't rib bone, it's costal cartilage. And most of the time when someone "breaks" a rib, It's actually not a "break", It's a separation of the cartilage and rib bone at the Costochrondral junction.
    It's easier to understand if you search "Costochrondral junction" and look at the images.

    Thank you for this video! I've had this debate with other shooters since 1979. When I was 16 I lived in Texas and in '79 I had done some work for a man. The short story is that part of my payment was a rifle. An Armalite AR-180. The civilian version of the AR-18. Anyway after firing it for years I had no doubt that 5.56 could be lethal at 1,000 yards. I've never attempted a shot at that distance but I have fired at 500 yard targets and knowing what it can do at that distance I always believed it would have potential lethality at 1,000 just because the velocity is so high. Thanks again for this video and your channel. I love the video short clips.

    At any rate, during basic training we shot our rifles for a solid week to get the feel. Before actual qualification, the rifle range had popup targets out to 800 meters (≈874 yards). This was with government M16A2 and its default sights.
    Our rifles were zeroed for 400m, so to hit center mass closer than that we aimed below, and to hit center mass further than that we aimed above. I knocked down quite a few popup targets with rifle #12 at C. co 2/46 at all the distances presented to me.
    For qualification day all targets further than 400m were turned off. The long range stuff was practice for "hypothetical scenarios" or maybe as a way for the cadre to see who had a good skill set.

    *THIS IS WHY LONGER BARRELS ARE KING!!*
    Everyone gets all excited about CQB (which they will never do IRL) and shorter 10" to 13.5" barrels but you lose so much velocity!! This is why I believe 18" is the absolute sweet spot for an AR.
    Rifle length gas system, soft shooting, less flash, less recoil, amazing velocity.....and if 2 extra inches and 4 more oz is a big deal YOU ARE NOT AN ACTUAL MAN!
    *FYI: playing around with Strelok between 700 and 800 yards is when your projectile went transonic (possibly subsonic) and the drop between 700 and 800 is nearly 80" - MASSIVE difference over that 100 yards*

    @americanoutlaw at 800yds where the ribs broke, that is right around the distance where that round goes transonic. If that is the case then the subsequent transonic boom could have occurred right at the point of impact increasing pressure in the cavity thus additional injury and cavitation.

    We tried long distance shooting with .223/5.56 in the late 80's during my PD days. We had an AR, Mini 14, and bolt gun, I think a Ruger 77 but that's been a long time ago. Anyhow, especially with the Mini 14, we found bullets tumbling more often than not after about 700 yds. At 800 if we managed to print our shots, they were mostly keyholed.

    When I was in basic back in the 70's we had targets out to 300 meters that was used for qualification with the M-16. IMHO the 556 is a great anti personal round. I have a rifle with a 16 inch barrel and use it for home defense against intruders. Now it's close combat where yards are feet and at say 10 feet a 62gr bullet traveling at 3000+fps will do the trick. The best part is a 556 will not cause the mess a 44mag or a shotgun will produce, less cleanup, and a hunting rifle will not raise many federal flags like a hand gun or a semi auto will.

    I'm not sure how true this is so someone, feel free to correct me, but i heard somewhere(can't remember where) 5.56 was never truly intended to kill, but to take combatants out of a fight. I.e. hitting a combatant, taking him out of the fight and having his buddy drag him to safety. Essentially, 2 birds, one stone.

    You were talking about hydrostatic shock around the 17:00 minute mark. Allow me to explain how this works a little bit.....when a round impacts, if and only if, the impact velocity is above 2400 FPS, what happens is the organs and tissues will stretch and cavitate, due to internal organs mostly being water (similar to how it takes the water a second to close in around your arm when you punch water in a pool, we also see this effect in ballistic gel as the 'temporary cavity'). Below 2400 FPS, the organs will stretch and return to normal, but above 2400 FPS it's too much for them, this has been pretty well studied, and what effectively happens is the organs and tissues will begin to tear themselves from reaching their elastic limit, thus causing damage in areas where the bullet never physically contacted, and the temporary cavity becomes apart of the permanent cavity. 5.56 is definitely 'lethal' out to 1000, but I would not call it 'effective' at all, at any range past about 300m, especially using common ammo such as M855 or M193, and with basically all 5.56 loads you're below 2400 FPS, which means you're not actually getting hydrostatic shock even if you're using a round like Mk262 which will fragment, and thus you're missing out on a LOT of terminal performance and incapacitating power. These rounds are roughly transferring the same amount of energy and damage (actually, probably significantly less) as a 22lr hollow point would up close which is not what I would consider effective or efficient (unless using again something like M855A1 or Mk262 which will fragment and create multiple wound channels). 5.56 wounds at distances of 300 meters and closer are extraordinarily devastating simply due to the Hydrostatic shock, and the mass fragmentation of the round which is observed at velocities higher than 2500, especially if your impact velocity is near 3000, even when utilizing basic M193 or M855 ammunition.
    I also recall you briefly touching on M855A1, which the effectiveness of that round has less to do with it's increased velocity (M855A1 is only about 50 - 100 fps faster than standard M855 on average), and more to due with the construction of it's projectile, there is a separation, though small, between the exposed steel alloy arrowhead and the copper jacket behind it, gel (and flesh) will fill this small gap on entry, and strip the jacket off very violently, similar to how a hollow point projectile acts. The Chopping Block has a video where he tested M855A1 projectiles at reduced velocities, and out of shorter barrels to directly test how it would fragment at lower speeds, as rounds like M855 and M193 will not fragment well, or at all below 2400 fps. M855A1 however displayed the capacity to continue fragmenting at 1900 FPS which is absolutely insane, and drastically increases the effectiveness and terminal range of 5.56, similar effects are seen with the 77gr Sierra Match King MK262 (which you were using for this video). Mk262 and M855A1 both on average *double* the effective range of 5.56

    (Not a doctor except on UA-cam) i work in TacMed training in TECC/TCCC and a variety of other types of training.
    My guess on the broken ribs is a combo of prior micro fractures from bullet impact, over pressure internally from temporary wound channel/shockwave followed by trauma to the shoulder causing the micro fractures to break. Most likely larger fractures intern side unseen during inspections but that rapid expansion internally would cause the body/sim body to expand.
    I can also say anyone who thinks just having an IFAK will keep them going without advanced care available after being wounded is incorrect and never been shot. Even a pistol caliber near the femur will be a risk for about 12 hours of the femoral artery rupturing at random during movement (like turning in a bed or a sneeze) and that will have you limited mobility for roughly 3 weeks. Walker, cane and random sharp pain for another few weeks. You're not throwing on a TQ stopping bleeding on a muscle wound and jumping back into the fight. Sitting and standing takes work and going back into the sh1t for very long will be nearly impossible once swelling starts. If the femur or artery is hit according to doctor's You're at about 18 weeks of rehab after surgery, putting bone back together with rods and plates and risking serious infections after.
    Great video. Nice to see you showing 5.5.56 ballistics and how effective, what ranges and what the bullet drift is.
