Great job. This is a better explanation of Gandalf than I've see Tolkien loremasters give. Seeing these scenes again makes me want to watch the movies. Just one epic scene after another.
Gandalf's story is my favorite in all the Tolkien Legendarium. When Manwe chose Olorin to help the free people oppose Sauron, he said he was afraid to go because he feared Sauron and wasn't powerful enough to defeat him. But he found his courage and ironically was the only Istari to complete his task.
How about an explanation on Tom Bombadil? He's got to be one of the most mysterious characters in Tolkien's fantasy, as well as being seemingly impervious to the events of any of the Ages. I've even heard rumor and speculation toward him being malign in intent, which goes against the notion that he and Gandalf spent a fair amount of time together. I'm sure we'd all be extremely interested to see what you could dig up, or even speculate on, your self!!!

Absolutely agree. I think Peter Jackson was scared of making him *too* powerful. In the books, Gandalf is a total boss. He destroys the Balrog, breaks Saruman's staff, stops the Witch King at the gates of Minas Tirith, and completely owns the Mouth of Sauron by striking him mute. In the movies, Jackson was probably worried that such badassery would (understandably) take the focus off of Frodo and Aragorn, as well as make the stakes seem less desperate. So they underplayed Gandalf's powers, especially in "Return of the King" to make things more intense. Unfortunately that makes Gandalf seem unfairly weak. So they have him lose to the Witch King, and have him appear discouraged by the Mouth of Sauron's taunts. Some subtle things work in books, but actions work better onscreen, so I guess Jackson thought it better for Aragorn to angrily kill the Mouth of Sauron instead of having Gandalf take away his power of speech. I was disappointed about that too.
