  • Genever, or Jenever, is a very old and classic spirit that was super popular in the U.S prior to Prohibition which also eventually evolved into Modern London Dry Gin. Genever is a spirit that has been made in Holland and Belgium since the middle ages and was incredibly important in early American cocktail culture. In this video I go over What is Genever, Where it comes from, and some of the great classic cocktails to make with Genever.

    Genever is fine for international purposes as it is a regional way to spell it here in Netherlands too, however the Dutch do generally pronounce it as Jenever (the alternative pronunciation you did).

    Bobby's Schiedam Jenever is a young jenever made with juniper, cardamom, lemongrass, ginger and tail pepper.

      I just bought a bottle! that sounds like an amazing combination for Jenever. It is similar to the recipe of my grandpa's home made Jenever he was from the Spice islands Maluku and came to Netherlands. Come to find out this is also a Moluccan Gin inspired by the grandfather of the current owner.

    Awesome video, didn't know much about Genever before but now I do! Love your approach to creating content on cocktails and spirits that no one else is doing. Gotta pick myself up a bottle!

      Awww thank you so much!! I'm so happy i was able to bring you some value!
      And you know, i just think there's so much awesome stuff out there that not many people know about or talk about and if I can help bring even a few more people to that then I'll consider myself successful. Usually that meant focusing on Latin/South American spirits and that is still my main focus but I've always had a soft spot for gin and doing this video was loads of fun!

    Genever is one of my favs! I love a lot of Malt in mine but idk if there’s statements on the bottle. I make a cocktail with Genever and Akwavit combined that’s a hit for new comers

    Great video! I subscribed to your channel, I really like the way you present the drinks, to the point but really interesting with the history and cultural heritage.
    Fun fact that you might find interesting, I'm from Belgium and in the region of Liège the genever is called péket, and there is a bar specialized in that drink called "La maison du péket" "The house of péket". In the local language, walloon, péket meant spicy and was used by the miners.

    What’s the name of the cocktail book from Jerry Thomas you’re talking about at 1:56? Thank you. Nice video. The second pronunciations it how you say it in Dutch and Jenever is definitely from Belgium.

      Thank you my friend! I'm glad you got something out of it!
      I've seen a lot more of it pop up here and there in bars in the Boston and greater Boston area but usually in the form of just Bols Genever, though tbh i didn't know much about it before starting this channel. I've had a lot of fun learning so much about such a historic spirit!

    How ironic is it , England a nation surrounded by countries that make , wiskeys , brandys/Cognac , Genevers. beers and wines.
    Cant even create a spirit on their own merrit.

    • @urbnctrl
      @urbnctrl Рік тому

      Actually Genever is also correct depending regional dialect. But the popular Dutch spelling and pronunction is Jenever that I agree on.

  • @timgentier5087
    @timgentier5087 2 роки тому

    no, no, no... Gin is the same as Genever but the recepy was stolen from us by the English and releashed upon the world in the way of Gin

    • @metalvideos1961
      @metalvideos1961 2 роки тому

      no gin is not the same as genever. yes they all use the same berry.
      The biggest difference between jenever and gin lies in the alcohol. Gin must be produced with neutral alcohol, gin with grain alcohol. In addition, jenever contains malt wine, which provides a strong grain taste comparable to unripened whiskey

    Genever isn't Dutch, it's Belgian ;-)

    • @theblitz6838

      Both really, we've been distilling it from way back before the Belgian independence.
      Edit:
      After some research I found out that the first ever mention of Jenever dates back to the 12th century in the Grand Duchy of Brabant.
