I would love more cocktails using Oude genever as it seems not many use it. Most specs seem to call for Jonge Genever. But more in depth coverage for Jonge would be awesome as well.

Another great video. I'd never heard of this spirit. I asked my Dutch friend about pronunciation. Genever is pronounced "Ya NA ver" very similar to "Ya never going to do that". It actually means juniper. Oude is pronounced "Ow Da", very similar to "Get owda here, ya buffoon!" Jonge is pronounced "Younge Ah", rhymes with "tongue ah!"

Anders, I've got to tell you. Before I discovered your channel, I had a few other go-to cocktail channels, but over the last year or so, I think yours has taken the top place in my official, highly-scientific, very important rankings of UA-cam cocktail channels. Your positivity, variety of spirits/cocktails, and beautiful aesthetics really make me happy to discover a new video each time you upload. Cheers and have a great day!

Fun fact: “jonge jenever” (the young style” originated during WWII, when there was simply not enough grain to make malted spirit. It’s been a relatively popular spirit here ever since! The old style, like you said in your video, is centuries old. Greetings from Holland 😊

Thank you for great video. I imported genever from The Netherlands. Got caught up in Customs, but finally got it three months later after paying taxes. My Uncle there introduced me to Bokma (Oude) from Friesland. My favorite is DeBorgen from Groningen. Interesting stuff.

  • @michelhv
    @michelhv 2 роки тому +3

Also fun fact: Québec is a huge market for genever, but we have no taste and just quaff DeKuyper blended genever by the gallon during hunting season. SAQ tried a while ago to import DeBorgen products, and while they were delicious, clearly they couldn’t compete with the bottom of the barrel stuff. As a result, “gros gin” as we call it remains a low prestige product that’s meant for sleazy uncles and alcoholics.

Fun thing is with jenever that it holds no boundaries to additional herbs etc. I currently have a bottle of Hooghoudt peated, really nice jenever! It was made with Scottish malted barley, aged in ex-bourbon cask for 3 years and had roasted coffee beans, lemon zest, cacao, Juniper berries and fresh ginger added. Really interesting drink for both gin and whisky lovers

Nice one Anders! I’ll be making a Flying Dutchman soon. “Korenwijn” is special edition with at least 51% of maltwine in it , matured on oak for at least a year. Chilled it accompanies fresh herring perfectly. If drink jenever on the side with a beer it’s called a “kopstootje” , ( headbutt)if you submerge your glass of jenever in your glass of beer it is referred to as “zinkertje”(sinker) although Germans might mistake this for a thinker😜. Cheers, I like your channel, love the drinks!

You are so helpful. When you share really good, under-the-radar cocktails we should be drinking ... or less popular cocktail spirits like Genever, Pisco, Cachaca, Rhum Agricole, Old Tom Gin, Calvados ... or cocktail specs you have refined over time ... it really helps me drink outside my comfort zone. You are the Robert Frost of Cocktails ... thanks for showing us the road less traveled.

Love genever, love mixing with it! As David Wondrich says in his brilliant book Imbibe, so called “Hollands Gin” was actually the preferred style of gin in America in the late 19th century and is called for in classic gin punches and cocktails. The Improved Gin Cocktail with oude jenever and a dash of curaçao is excellent!
I would love to hear some of your recommendations for specific bottle in another (differently sponsored!) video. Some Belgian genevers I am a big fan of are Filier’s 5yo on the oude side and Blauwe Duif on the jonge.

And, as a result of watching your channel, I have gotten into cocktail making, bought many bottles of booze, driving the need to purchase a bar cart that just arrived today! One small weird thing......I miss the way you used to drag the liquor bottles across your bar while introducing each ingredient. i just really liked the noise they made and the way it gave each bottle a little dramatic entre!

The proper way of drinking a straight genever is to pour it somewhat chilled into a tulip-shaphed cordial glass past the rim so the meniscus almost overflows the glass. Then with hands held behind one's back, you bow forward towards the bar top and "Slurp" (slurpen) the first sip with your mouth hands free. Then , and only then, may you pick up the glass with your hand(s). When sipped along with a glass of beer, the combination is a "Kopstootje" (Little Headbutt). You don't drop the tulip glass into the beer like a boilermaker. It is much more Continental and refined.

Hi Anders, as a seasoned 'jenever' drinker, please try to get your hands on a bottle distilled by Van Wees from Amsterdam. It is a magical experience, so much flavour and you will not even notice the fact it has alcohol in it. A truly magical drink if distilled by true craftsmen.. or in this case women.

I've got a nice bottle of oude genever and I'll have to give this recipe a try. I mostly use it to make Improved Cocktails and I think it's my favorite spirit for that drink. I also experimented in using it to replace the gin in a White Negroni and I thought it worked really well and added a nice maltiness to the drink.

Jenever has a rich history: it has many names in Dutch: Papegaaiesoep (parrot soup, since it gets your mouth running) pikketanussie (just rols off the tongue nicely) Jajem, which rhymes with Majem, meaning body of water (amsterdam rhyming slang) and many others. Papegaaiesoep is my alltime fav. toedels!

    • @sjorsvanrijswijk358
      @sjorsvanrijswijk358 2 роки тому

To add to that, a typical style to drink Jenever is next to a beer, the combo is called een kopstoot (headbutt) one way to do it is to drop the glass of Jajem completely in the beer. (advanced level, or quickly drunk level). a Jenever shot is often poured with a head on it, meaning it is filled to the brim. to drink this you need to bow, or 'bukken voor je pikketanussie'. meaning you have to stand up, put your hands on your back, as the gentleman you are, and sip the top off the miniscus.

Genever is a really underrated spirit. The English tried to make "Dutch Courage" which they failed at, so they created Gin. Genever is much more complex than Gin, but you do not necessarily drink it neat. Actually, the very first cocktails where made mostly with Genever. I personally love a Mai Tai with barreld Aged Genever, you get much more complexity and flavour rather then with rum.
Let me know if are interessted and I can have Lucas Bols send you their variety of Genevers.

Anton van Wees, the oldest family distillery in Amsterdam, still makes good genevers in Jordaan district. They make jonges, oudes, and vrij oudes along with more rye-based (Roggeners) genevers. Fenny van Wees has run the company for a while and is the only lady distiller in Netherlands. Their distillery also makes tradition Dutch liqueurs. "Oranjebitter" is traditionally sipped on Koningsdag (King's Day) which is late April 30 (the birthday of current King Willem-Alexander. (His mother, Queen Emerita Beatrix's birthday was in January so it was going to be too cold so she kept HER mom's (Queen Juliana) birthday of April 27 as Queen's Day). "Heaven on Earth" tastes like Christmas party in your mouth and everyone is invited! "Roses without Thorns" is a delightful rose-flavored drink made from Bulgarian eating roses, vanilla, and spices. They even make Tonka bean flavored liqueurs (the Tonka Bean has been banned in the US since 1954 for no good reason at all; a chemical made in the dark long leathery bean, coumarin, potentially under certain rare circumstances, can turn into coumadin, the anticoagulant that we use to thin blood in people with clotting disorders or atrial fibrillation). It is supposed to taste like vanilla but BETTER! You can import some of these good spirits through TheWhiskeyExchange.com

Fun fact, Jenever is actually a Belgian spirit of which the archetype was first described by Jacob Van Maerlant in 1269 and later in 1552 by the physician Phillipus Hermanni who called it aqua juniperi. Due to the fall of Antwerp in 1585 during the Eighty Years’ War, loads of Belgians emigrated to The Netherlands and brought their Jenever with them.

I bought a bottle of Bols Genever a while back when I was first getting into gin. Was basically trying a Tom Collins using the different types of gin to see which I liked the best. I remember the genever version being tasty, but my favorite gin ended up being Plymouth Gin. Anyway, I always though it was pronounced like the name Jennifer only with a v sound instead of the f sound.

      it's a bit more like:
      yuh-nay-ver
slurred together without any spacing between the syllables ofcourse
in dutch it's generally spelled with the J rather than the G, but some brands do use the old style G
the old style starting with the G would be pronounced more like a combination of a Z and Y the french use a lot, like the one in "jus" (to us a J, but more often than not phonetically closer to the english Y)
      zyuh-nay-ver

Speaking of men named Wagner, there is an opera called The Flying Dutchman, composed by Richard Wagner.

Oh oh oh! I hear a challenge: “if you tell me not to mix with something then I probably will”
Don’t mix with tea, certainly don’t make a list episode with different ways to mix with tea.
Also, don’t mix with agwa (the coco liquor)
    Don’t mix with galliano
You should certainly not do an episode listing different bitters forward cocktails like the Trinidad sour (one of my favorites now, and my father in laws favorites now too lol )
Seriously though, great episode as usual! I love the extra history and explanations!

I have it relatively easy in Vancouver! I think I have only ever seen 1 Genever! I definitely want to try it. These cocktails look lovely and delicious!! I sympathize with Oz. I just got called AGAIN for jury duty. I admit I got myself out of it this time!! Have a terrific weekend!! Cheers!! :-)

@@AndersErickson I will absolutely give Genever a try, Anders!! I'm excited to check out the flavours and make some lovely cocktails!! I'm chuckling about jury duty! I have been called numerous times and I have done jury duty in the past so I figured this time it was fair to try an avoid what is projected to be a longer trial. Cheers!! Be well!! :-)

When I was in my mid to late teens and started to drink for recreational purposes, 'Cola Tic' was the first regular.
It's basically cola spiked with rum or jenever.
A few years later after the novelty had worn off, I learned that my 'cola tic' was made with Jonge Jenever.
And once I became acquainted with Oude Jenever, I could only think of Jonge Jenever as *vile.*
To any starting drinker: if you order 'cola tic,' make sure the alcoholic beverage that is mixed with the cola is rum, not Jonge Jenever.

Please consider making a video about mixing multiple cocktails at once. If I’m making two of the same cocktail, can I just double the ingredients or do I need two separate shakers? More ice to chill or the same? Are there cocktails or ingredients where this doesn’t work (egg white?), etc. How do you do it at a busy bar?

Did you know that in the French speaking part of Belgium (Wallonia), Genever is called "Peket" (as well as simply "Genièvre") ? :D
It's also the base for one of the simplest cocktail we drink a lot here the "Blanc coca" which could be translated into "White Coke", white because of the "color" of the Genever (or Peket) and coca referring to Coca-Cola.
Basically, it's 2 ounces of Genever served over ice, topped with Coke and sometimes served with a slice of lemon :P

It’s like a Genever-forward Monte Cassino! For a Monte Cassino I actually prefer a 2:2:1:1 ratio of whiskey : lemon : Benedictine : Yellow Chartreuse. If you haven’t had it that way, give it a try! Brighter, and less sweet.

I just came back from Amsterdam and brought 2 different styles of genever. It's funny that when I came back to re-watch the video to try the recipe, I immediately noticed and recognised the same 2 bottles in the background behind you! 😂 So I assume these are the two genevers used in the video. Nevertheless, nice easter egg!

Anyone that tells you not to use genever in a cocktail has probably never even had a sip of genever. Because the moment you have a sample of it, you know it belongs in a cocktail.

I have discovered that I can make a nearly identical substitute for Bols Original Genever by mixing one part Beefeater Gin and two parts Climax Moonshine. Bols Original is clear, but it does not state on the bottle whether it is Oude or Jonge style.
