Also, I'm an accomplished bassoonist and relate to this string struggle! I'm alternating piano practice with guitar in order to give myself some hope! I use the Alfred's method books, there's also a lesson video that's almost 2 hrs long on Amazon Prime FYI.
Last comment for right now...chords aren't all there is - consider a method book because you learn scales and fingerpicking, which will give you the ability to play songs. I'm still on Twinkle, twinkle, but at least I can play it! 😂
I'm also just learning guitar, your finger pads on the left hand shouldn't be on the frets - think of it as playing with the tip of where your fingernails come from rather than the part of your finger from where you might push a button.
