  • MAX RICHTER PIANO: So what do we think of the new piano sample from composer Max Richter? [SPOILER ALERT] It's gorgeous! So today Guy takes a look at one of the most intimate and rewarding pianos he's played in a long time and tries - with only partial success - to write music to accompany the birds who come to the shed bird feeders....in real time.

Unfortunately there was an audio issue with this video which we have now corrected. It was a technical problem at our end and nothing to do with the library! A new version of the video with fixed audio is available here: ua-cam.com/video/ZA9yeeQL0vU/v-deo.html

It does sound like a really nice piano. Something odd happens to the sound at around 4:40, and there's definite distortion at 5:00 (and after) - not sure what happened there.

Agree 100%, actually pulled me out of it a bit. The piano was beautiful before that (and I'm a huge Richter fan), but yeah, the distortion after that point is VERY bad.

Hello, Guy! Really love your channel for the last 3-4 years (or maybe more)! I hope you don't might me asking, but I have one idea for future videos... What do you think about getting a deep dive in some of your cues from your movies?) For instance, some action cues from Marvel's animation, or themes for Iron Man or Planet Hulk, or some action cues from Jackboots on Whitehall? I'm talking especially about action cues, since I find your orchestral action writing really strong, especially in Jackboots on Whitehall. I think it would be a really great thing for the new year to find out details about real-life examples of advanced action orchestration. Anyway, that's up to you!

Thru my studio monitors - sounds good. You'd probably place the speakers appropriately and each key is placed well in the stereo field. I would probably have wanted each note to be "stereo" and positioned really along the whole stereo field. Sounds good from here. I have to wonder if anyone at pianobook have done anything like this too. Forte was definitely clipping at about 5:05 and your mic was close to clipping as well.

    • @johnmcvicker6728

@@mcfahk I think Guy goes through new microphones nearly every season, month, fortnight, etc. Usually is pretty good and sometimes a little rough like this. Sound-checks (like we do in live sound mixing) are worth doing with video recording too. Pro-tip for anyone selling audio courses - make sure your audio is top-notch! :) I enjoy Guy's videos because he's a bit like me - sometimes rushing headlong into wanting to help others with some tips. Creativity can be messy.

I got a hold of some reel to reel tape recordings of birds in nature one time the government was throwing away. I played them on my stereo and placed the speakers in my apartment open windows. The recordings attracted all kinds of small birds to a small sapling in the middle of the courtyard. It was neat. My neighbour noticed the quiet commotion.

@@paulcooper9981 Yep - saves files with timestamps and the number of notes you played. You can just import the file into your DAW and edit it - which initiated at least one or two of my song ideas which I surely would have forgotten otherwise. 😉

I grew up on the piano, been playing for nearly 25 years now! When composing, if I can't get the emotion through on a solo piano, I haven't achieved the correct melody / harmony yet. I always start on piano and then arrange from there. Awesome to hear your thoughts on composing from the piano! :)

    • @bookstuart

I think Guy just listens to the audio and picks out the yes moments. As Guy says Max’s piano is idea for composing ‘noodles’ as Guy calls them (I call them doddles) and have a midi recorder running in the background all the time. I use either Cubase or the midi recorder in my Kawai mp10. Midi is flexible, you can add, modify and clean up the noodles.

Sorry, but my studio monitors give me a lot of distortion at the forte notes here and even when you speak louder. I'm not used to this - usually they have very little THD. Sounds like digital clipping (did you try to get over 0 dB?).
