Back in September I understood that shoulder and chest are the first movers when rowing, and that was a gamechanger for my back. I think I got the cue from your workout with Iain. Great stuff, hoping to be able to work in real life with you some day!

2:36 I call that a stiff arm pull. I use the Stiff arm pull to practice pulling from the stretch position. Squeezing the shoulder blades together should lift the plates only a tiny distance. Then, from there, the elbow will naturally bend, and then I row through. Practising stiff arm pulls is the precursor for everything you have discussed in rowing. There is no space between the chest rest and your chest, so you should not be able to get a piece of paper in there.
@paulblake1164 After shoulder surgery, pt had me doing these same simple movements so ur using the right muscles. I found a lot of pt pretty useful for gaining muscle

Nah...Mike Mentzers HIT training was better. Dorian Yates had the best grainy muscle quality because of it

I tried his workout methods for 2 months and I lost gains It’s still awesome, but it just doesn’t work for me. Remember, do what works for you.
