Here's how to fight SFII Sheng Long!
Download SFII character pack from: gcnmario.free.fr
Player must be either Ryu or Ken using sf2ww.def. sf2ww/ryu.def or sf2ww/ken.def will NOT work.
Must get at least 5 PERFECT matches against anyone. Do NOT lose any health at any time.
Draw the first round against M.Bison when you've reached him as the 5th match onward.
Do NOT use sf2ww/mbison.def for the CPU match. This will NOT unlock the fight against Sheng Long.
Arcade Notes for sf2ww.def:

A random character between slots 0 and 7 will be chosen for the 1st match.
Balrog always takes 2nd match.
Vega always takes 3rd match.
Sagat always takes 4th match.
M.Bison will always take the 5th match onward.
I know this was an April Fool's joke, but my gosh, whoever did this did a fabulous job of making it look like a part of the game.
Sheng Long is a very likable character, just like everyone else in the entire S F franchise.

The original EGM april fool's issue said that in order to access Sheng Long, you had to fight bison to a draw without letting him touch you for 10 rounds. After that sheng long would dispose of bison and you'd have to fight him. People went ape shit back in the day over that. Was the inspiriation for what would eventually become Akuma

This is hilarious. Though Shen Long was originally a mistranslation of the kanji used for Shoryuuken.
I'm sure there's info about this online, but I used to play this game when it first came out in the arcade in Hong Kong. The shoryuken was called "Sing Long" in chinese, which translates to "star dragon". This isn't the first time that I've seen this kind of transaltion though, because if you want Saint Seiya, there's a character called Shiryu in that, who uses the "Sho-ryu-Ha" - which is "Rising Dragon Wave", but in the chinese translation, this is "Sing long ba".. with the star. So "Shen Long" is indeed referring to the dragon punch, the Shoryuken

Born free, Had this video surfaced in the 90's, it would've been pandemonium amongst kids across the country. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in quarters would've been pumped into arcade cabinets trying to find a hidden character that doesn't exist.
Capcom definitely should have called Gouken Sheng Long in SF4 it would have all made sense. Anyway nice to see Mr Born Free on here so had to give props to a man who is flying the UK flag in the FGC and does some great videos on modern day SF, so check out his stuff people.

I remember reading about this in an Electronic Gaming Monthly as a kid and deciding I was going to spend ALL of my quarters to try and make this happen. I ended up not doing it, but I had no idea it was an April Fools joke until my 30s. Well done!
In the uk it was in a games mag too, had fake screenshots. Said you had to beat bison perfect both rounds to get him to appear.

The dumbest part of this whole "Shen Long" thing has always been, that it's a mistranslated "Shenron" = Dragon, meaning Ryu is saying the only way anyone can beat him is if his opponent can neutralize his uppercut.

A fake reader from a fake state (HA, which doesn't even stand for Hawaii lol) said you had to go through every level without getting hit, fight Bison 10 times without getting hit, then Sheng Long would jump onscreen, kill or toss off Bison, then it'd be on. I did pretty good, even though i knew in my gut it was fake. I pored over the tiny image they showed, noticing his long hair was a cut and paste job. THANK YOU for this video. X D

The "you must defeat shen long" thing... 'cause in chinese ideogram SHORYUKEN read also as SHENG LONG. So, in fact, original kanji state "you must overcome my DRAGON PUNCH (shoruyken) to stand a chance". Everything else is an hoax.
Thank you for clearing that up for us. I knew something was weird about this video. Shen Long was supposed to be Akuma's brother, but we've never gotten to see him (Until now, seemingly). He got beaten by Ryu so very easily that it just didn't seem realistic. Akuma is pure hell to defeat, yet his brother was like another Dan? 😒

when I was a kid and this was a rumor, had we seen this, we would have been amazed. up to that point we had sf 2 champion edition. there were no flaming dragon punches or air fireballs or hadoken fireballs that were orange. that stuff all came later. I like how he doesn't stay dizzy and he can throw multiple projectiles. too bad he never existed. Capcom wasted a good opportunity because I remember all sorts of dudes playing game after game after game trying to find reptile in mk 1. I miss the arcades. it was competition. and it sucked to plunk down 50 cents only to get schooled and then have to wait in line again. and that feeling you got when you saw someone challenge you by putting their quarters in knowing they are much better than you because you had seen them kicking all sorts of ass...only to then beat them. sf 2. mk 1 and samurai shodown were the best arcade fighters imo.

Just for fun: But in todays romanizations of chinese names, his name is spelled Shenglong or Sheng-long. Its only his given name. All SF2 characters are only listed either by their given name or surname, like Ryu, Ken, Guile, Zangrief, E. Honda, M. Bison, Sagat, Vega, etc., nobody is listed with given- and surname.
This is why Chun Li or Fei Long should also be spelled Chunli and Feilong, because its only their given names, not a given name and surname.

When I was a child playing this on the SNES. There was a rumor on how to play against Sheng Long. You had to beat the game on maximum difficulty, perfect every round, and never drop a round.
I love how Sheng Long is just Ryu but recolored and with a beard.
