  • BEING TRIGGERED AND HAVING THOUGHTS AND BEING AFRAID ... ARE NOT FAILING!
Often anxious people on the road to recovery declare that getting triggered, experiencing fear, or having anxious or negative thoughts means they're doing it wrong and failing at recovery.
Here's news. Those things are all normal for all humans, and you are allowed to be human in recovery. Recovery is not never being triggered or afraid. Recovery is not blocking bad thoughts or only having happy thoughts. Recovery is found in the way we relate to these things and work with them.
Here we are not learning to be less human. We're learning to be better humans.

"I have to figure it out." Boy am I guilty of this, big time! I was doing pretty OK for the past couple of weeks, and then for the past 2-3 days I've been struggling a bit. Not anywhere near what it was earlier this year, but prominent enough for that "figure it out" feeling to come up.

Hey Drew and admins, just wanted to second your facebook comments. I found you over 2 years ago and been recovered for a while - a lot to do with you guys 🙏. I now work in the mental health sphere and I help run group sessions of no more than 10 people plus a mental health professional. Even then to keep the session focused to benefit everyone and keep boundaries etc is hard work! What you guys did in the facebook group for basically, the whole world was outstanding! But at work we do a lot about ensuring we keep ourselves well also - and keep a balance, so I absolutely agree the Facebook group was not sustainable, not just the advice but keeping things on point - it was outstanding, but not sustainable without burning out! Thanks again guys 👍

Hey Drew! I would also be interested in a link for the therapy that would be available February.

I'll make that link more widely available as we get closer to that time. It's already attracted the spam bots! 😐

I found your podcast a few weeks ago and I have been totally floored by how closely my experience with anxiety and panic disorder mirrors so much of what’s said. Some of my first memories as a child were of me sitting on the floor hyperventilating (with what I can only imagine was anxiety). Listening to you has really brought a sense of comfort and healing. Thank you so much for these videos, the podcast and being so open and honest. 💚

I have to admit that even after quite a few years in this amazing community of ours, I'm always taken aback with just how many people think they are alone or uniquely broken when they experience these things. I'm glad I could help you see that its not "just you".

I’m feeling like a failure today. My symptoms have come back so strong and I’ve let them get the best of me again. I know what to do. I’ve done it before but I’m discouraged because it’s not as easy to pull back out as I thought it would be. I need to stop watching videos, and stop voicing the symptoms, but I keep beating myself up because I feel like I have to be tough and I’m not,….ugh.

"I need to stop watching videos" is a really powerful statement. Sometimes we can fall into the trap of running for anxiety content when we feel bad. Books. Podcasts. Videos. It can feel like we're doing something or take away the sting of retreat. But the sting of retreat has lessons in it too. I like that you said this. Give yourself credit for that. Its a step!

I have good days and bad days, but I never beat myself up over it. Is it frustrating? Absolutely. I let it take over and don't fight it, then I let my brain know that it was not a life-threatening situation, and to me, retraining my brain.

Love it! This is a great way to frame things to help keep us out of the "beating ourselves up" trap. Well done!

How can i not be afraid of anxiety when ive had it so high 4 times over 11 years and it affects me being able to function and go out? I know the route out is to not be fearful of anxiety but i am and im always looking over my shoulder for any thoughts or symptoms that can then lead to me catastrophising then high anxiety. How can you not be afraid of something that is awful?

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  11 місяців тому

We LEARN that we do not have to be as afraid. We don't just decide to not be afraid. This is a really important distinction. That means we act while afraid to learn that we didn't have to be so afraid.

    Hello drew,
Do you have like an order to watch videos like an a to z to fully understand anxiety?

Start with the first 16 episodes of my podcast. All the episodes are in a playlist on my channel. Go through episodes 1 through 16 to get the foundational concepts. They're old and need to be updated, but they still generally apply. And the podcast had a different name back then (That Anxiety Guy) so don't be thrown off by that.
