Putting your car ON TOP of your wheels is genius actually

  • We never think about it, but the interesting things about a wheel only happen on the outside. The axle is actually resting on the outside of another set of tiny wheels. The ball bearing. Putting your axle straight through your wheel would be kinda stupid, because it would have a lot of friction. It would basically be sliding!

      i am fully aware this is not that deep and i am fully aware i am too affected by this harmless debate that is SUPPOSED to not have an answer just don't read if you don't want to listen to me on how dumb i think the wheels and doors debate is while simultaneously passionately explaining why there are more doors
      tl;dr
      computers have a LOT of doors
      i hate this debate so much because with how far people warp the definion of a wheel or door, the answer is 100% doors.
      initially, it's kinda half and half
      you have cars which have four wheels and doors, so seems equal
      but then you think about buildings, which have multiple doors in them with no wheels to pair with them. but there's also many cars with only two doors, trucks with loads of wheels, and the argument comes back to being pretty much half and half
      but now, what if we're defining a wheel by a round thing which makes something move? now gears can be considered wheels, and there are way more wheels than doors now that you consider the number of cogs and gears inside of cars, trucks, buses and more. you can argue toy car wheels should count, making the wheels pull even further ahead, but now we also consider toy doors which pull doors to be closer to wheels. but what do double doors count as? do they count as one whole unit, or two doors on their own? what about those rollers in factories n things which help the product slide through much more easily? must be loads of those, but now the definition of a wheel is warped, how about doors? gates can be considered doors, they open and close and stop stuff from coming in and out, are windows doors? what about the wheels in the hinges which allow them to open?
      but finally here's my final argument to why doors would easily win since we're warping definitions so much:
      computers work by capturing electrons and reading them as a 1 or 0, which in a sense works by doors because a 0 and 1 both must be changed by opening a gate to allow electrons to flow by applying a small voltage, which in my opinion qualifies as a door if any round thing which moves stuff counts as a wheel. in just one iphone 15 pro, there are 19 billion of these "doors" called transistors, which is already a huge amount. now consider apple sells thousands of these, there are at least 19 trillion doors, which is being very generous. this doesn't even include flagship phones from other brands like samsung, google, huawei and more
      this number also doesn't include older phones, high end pcs with threadrippers for their cpu, servers and more, which easily boosts this number into quadrillions of doors
      ok i'm going to finish this comment, i've written do much the youtube app is starting to lag like crazy, i could say more but i cannot keep typing in 3 fps LMAO

      @@nishiko28okay... Just hear me out...
      Pick any point within a wheel, and track it as the wheel spins. You will find that every single point of a wheel orbits around the axle. Ergo, wheels are just a mass of points orbiting around an axle.
      Electrons are a subatomic particle that orbits around an atom's nucleus. However, we don't actually know where electrons are at a given point in time, because something something quantum mechanics. So, when we talk about the location of electrons we are actually talking about the mass (the group kind, not the physics one) of points that are orbiting around a nucleus where an electron could be. You know what this sounds like? Wheels. Ergo, electrons are just wheels.
      QED, everything is just wheels aaaaall the way down. Doors are just wheels. You are a wheel. I am a wheel. We are but cosmic wheel dust, the product of a wheel universe spinning around like a headless wheel chicken.

      2. Then we make tiny gear like teeth on the cylinder and also on the inner and outer surfaces of outer and inner ring, that way the rollers will still be able to roll but they'll never slide.
      3. And then, if we adjust the gear ratio and spacing between each rollers such that each roller will have a lil bit of gap between them, then the ⚙️ gear teeth mechanism will take care of maintaining that gap forever..
      If we do it like that, then the minimum clearance between each roller will be the width of a single teeth. Moreover I know introducing teeth would increase friction, but we can minimize it by applying lube..

    This is the real reason the wheels vs doors debate is solved. There are not 4 wheels in a car or even 5 (steering wheel). There are probably a dozen wheels per tire, 2 per door, and at least 4 in your control cluster.
    Every door in or out of a car has at least one hinge which is basically a wheel.

    • @jaredlancaster4137
      @jaredlancaster4137 8 місяців тому +1

      A hinge is definitely not a wheel, a wheel has to be round and roll. Pivot=/=wheel.
      I'd say it's questionable whether ball bearings count as wheels, considering I've never seen a spherical wheel, but I can agree that cylindrical roller bearings can be wheels. Most of the bearings in a car are roller bearings, not ball bearings.
      You're missing the considerable number of roller bearings inside the transmission, especially considering the transmission is full of gears which should probably count as wheels.

    • @ajreukgjdi94
      @ajreukgjdi94 8 місяців тому

      @@jaredlancaster4137 by wheel, my thought is something that makes use of the simple machine "wheel and axel" and the axel part doesn't necessarily have to rely on rolling friction. It can use sliding friction. Think about a pinewood derby car, the wheels roll on the ground, but they don't roll on the axles. They slide. That's why graphite is really important at high level competition. The wheel of the hinge is the metal plate attached to the door with a round hole in it. The axle is the pin that the round hole spins around.
      You're right, a pivot does not equal a wheel, but the pivots that don't count are those which are one piece and rely on bending to rotate. Compliant mechanisms. A pivot that only works because it's made of 2 pieces (one with a round hole and the other with a round peg designed to fit and rotate in that hole) I am going to argue is a wheel.

    • @ajreukgjdi94
      @ajreukgjdi94 8 місяців тому

      @@jaredlancaster4137 and as for ball bearings, those don't fall under wheel and axle. So I'd be willing to cede if someone was dead set on arguing they aren't wheels. But perhaps we can allow wheels which don't come with axles. I'm picturing the way they used to animate Egyptian slaves pulling a sled over rolling logs. When one came out the back, they picked it up and laid it in front again. I think they determined this wasn't the actual way they built it and it was just dragging, but the animations flew around early UA-cam for a while.
      Anyway, I think it's safe to say those function similarly to wheels in the sense that they lighten the load needed to push by replacing sliding friction with rolling friction. A simple machine is one used to reduce the force needed to achieve some task. Well, if you had a 2×2 ft board and put a dozen ball bearings underneath it, I think you would see very clearly that it is much easier to roll the board around just like the animations of the sleds rolling over the logs with the addition of 2D movement instead of only 1.
      If you're willing to accept the logs as wheels, I feel you must also accept ball bearings as wheels (especially because the race forces them back into only 1 direction of movement, and the circle nature automatically removes the need to pick up the logs in back and place them in front.) But if you're unwilling to accept the logs are being used as wheels in that example, then I totally understand why you wouldn't accept ball bearings either.

      @@ajreukgjdi94 I accept the Egyptian logs as wheels, since they roll and are wheels. I don't think an axle is necessary.
      Ball bearings maybe don't count as wheels just because wheels are in all other cases cylindrical, not spherical, and that makes it weird. Maybe they should count as wheels, but it would be very unconventional.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 7 місяців тому +2

      Yes, that's what would happen. The bearing he describes does not sit between the axle and the wheels (those two are mechanically locked and rotate together), it sits between the axle and the carriage/suspension.
      Unless we're not talking about a car, but a vehicle without an engine, like a wheel barrow, a trailer, a soapbox or a carriage. In those cases it can work like this video suggests, no problem. Also two-wheeled vehicles, since they don't need an axle, obviously.

    Sadly not entirely friction free since you still need to close them off but it does provide very minimal friction.
    Does leave me to wonder if there exists a wheel design that is truly free of any friction.
    The seal would also need to have a friction-free design.

    Ball bearing is a specific kind of bearing. What he described being created is an enclosed or encased bearing. Some use rod style bearings but more common is to find them full of ball bearings. You also have friction bearings which are designed to reduce friction while being the part that wears away faster than the components.
