Note: Some of the comments i made here have been removed, because my google account has restarted for some unknown reason, so all the comments i made i guess prior from 2015 are gone forever. So it feels pretty awkward to respond back to older comments now. Just to keep that in mind.

I remember as a kid playing soul calibur 2 I always hated berserker because he cheated a lot and I’m also wondering why he and assassin never talk and only grunts a lot?

For Berserker I assume he never speaks because he’s supposed to be driven insane by the Evil Seed, like Kilik and his friends were in SCVI and before the first SC. But for Berserker he’s just kind of only capable of animalistic grunts since he’s so far gone.
As for Assassin, he works for Fygul Cestemus (the cult that created Astaroth and Lizardman/Lizardmen) and either doesn’t speak because he’s the only Persian character and can’t communicate with the rest of the cast, or just refuses to speak, probably as part of his order’s code. I believe Assassin is meant to be completely human though unlike Berserker since he still laughs and makes proper battle cries in fights.

Berserker always confused me, two very different designs with one like some weird knight, the other one looking more like Tigris of Gaul from Gladiator more than anything, he didn’t look like he belonged to any culture from Soul Calibur. And of course nothing other than grunting. I know now that Assassin was somewhat based on the historical Assassins (that Assassin’s Creed comes from) but everything about Berserker is vague.
Also these dungeons were one of my favorite things about Soul Calibur 2 and Weapon Master in particular.

Yeah, about that. To the extent of my knowledge, they seem to be filler characters, just to fill in the gap. These are plural characters. Hence, you may think Aeon Calcos has made a return to Soulcalibur II. But no, it's supposed to replicate an army of Lizardmen. But there have been theories going around that Hwang was Assassin all along. Since Assassin has Hwang's moveset and Berserker has Rock's moveset from the previous game. Since Hwang and Rock are absent in Soulcalibur II, technically Aeon as well.
Since they are plural characters. That's why there seems to be a lack of backstory. In modes that require a bit of a story, you can't really play as them. So yes as you described it, these characters are quite vague for sure.
Yes, i agree. I do like these dungeon mazes filler that they add in Weapon Master. And the endless amount of different varieties they come up with in the same stage. Clearly what makes this game special.

@@RainbowRoadCrashTest it’s weird looking back, I had assumed that Aeon was back but Soul Calibur IV made it even clearer that he was just one of many Lizardmen. As for Assassin, I figured he would have spoken if he were Hwang, though Hwang appearing masked in SCVI feels like an indirect callback.
Since I’m actively fascinated by the designs of Berserker, I think some of his face is visible but obscured, partially seen through the grates and between the parts of the helmet but half of the face still covered by chain mail, and what looks like glowing yellow eyes. He sounds very animalistic while Assassin sounds like a normal and even cocky fighter.
It’s crazy, the Berserkers of SCIII are very different and clearly meant to be European knights, but SCII looks like a vaguely European fantasy armor like a cross of stereotypical Vikings and knights, but the other costumes like some strange gladiator or Ancient Greek of some sort.
Sorry for the rant, I’m very nostalgic and fascinated by the various designs of this game and it’s now 20 years with a lot of unanswered questions.

@@jeffplissken8996 The lore behind Aeon Calcos that he was once Human. He was one of 24-warriors to receive an oracle from the god Haphaestus to destroy Soul Edge. However, he was lost in a vast desert and collapsed. He was rescued by nearby village people, and he was about to repay his kindness by teaching them his sword skills. However, the Evil Seed rained down upon them, and Aeon has turned into nothing but a mindless killer, slaughtering everyone in sight. Kunpaetku, heard stories about Aeon. So they captured Aeon, to use him as an experiment for their evil schemes. So they turned him into a Lizard, thus Lizardman was born.
Not much is known about Assassin, that we can all speculate since you do fight them in the Kunpaetku shrine in SCIII. That they might be agents of Fygul Cestemus.
There is some lore behind Berserker as well, since they were once a clan of elite knights from The Holy Roman Empire. It was one day that the Evil Seed rose and cursed the knights into something monstrous. Which explains more of some non-human characteristic traits. Most of them now reside in Labyrinths with secret motivation.
But for SCIII, picture something like each game they are reinventing their characters into something more cooler and flashy. But with SCIII since it is the first of the series where you can create your own character. Berserker was built upon preset equipment from Character Creation mode. Possibly the preset equipment was originally meant for Berserker.
But no, i do love the mystery surrounding with the older Soulcaliburs, the surreal atmosphere with some characters that present an aura of mystery, has definitely created a sense of wanting to explore the unknown.

@@RainbowRoadCrashTest funny you should mention the mystery of early Soul Calibur because I found it at an important time. I was a kid playing SCII just at the same time as I was becoming interested in Egyptology, so those particular stages were great to play on, especially in the dungeon mode in Weapons Master in Egyptian themes as well as that stage with the pyramids in the background, really gave me a “The Mummy” kind of impression but with that atmosphere that Soul Calibur has. Part of me always wanted there to be something crazy huge like that buried under Egypt, and the whole lore idea of crazy things like Soul Edge being involved in Ancient Egypt was always cool as hell to me. I need to do another deep dive in SC’s lore, it’s a bit crazy now that we’re all the way to SCVI now but it doesn’t get old, I feel like that game has done well with callbacks to earlier games. I’ve also managed to make a pretty decent Berserker (the armored red variety) so might have to try Assassin next.

Castle of the Damned after clearing out Chapter 10 for the first time, if my memory serves me right. Castle of the Damned is the stage where you fight 5 characters in a row, with Assasin being the fifth with the condition being that your HP gets depleted over time. Weapons that recover health passively, like Cervantes' Firangi or Nightmare's Soul Edge(Growth) don't heal you under that condition.

Yes, if Soulcalibur II HD Online is not on a Nintendo console. Then there's no Link. Plus, i don't think Nintendo will be happy campers if one of their characters hang with other consoles other than Nintendo. So that could be another reason why Link is not in Soulcalibur II HD Online.
