I loved this show and I have this show on DVD! Michael J Fox was my first Crush when I was a kid... I wanted him to be my big brother and the whole Keaton Family as my family instead of the one I have now. I miss the 80s b/c they had great shows back in the day and the music and movies weren't bad either. Now everything sucks and I miss the old days. Ever since we had the internet everything went to hell with chatrooms, social media, my space, and it changed everything. TV shows suck now and so do the movies too and the new generation doesn't know anything. That god I was an 80s and 90s kid. I would hate to grow up now in 2019.

Off topic, but looking closer at the Keaton's kitchen, though the decor is dated, in a way it was kind of ahead of its time, at least imo, & compared to the kitchens I saw in most homes growing up in the 80s. Like I don't remember it being very typical to see kitchen islands, stainless steel appliances, & open shelving in most homes. Maybe it was just the area I grew up in. I always liked the spaciousness of their kitchen, & wish mine was that big!

This scene makes me cry sooo much. I fought a lot with both my parents because they were so overprotective of me as a kid because I had so many health issues. They wouldn't just let me go with just anyone to even a simple place like to the mall, or to the movies or out to eat at a restaurant etc. They would speak to the parents and ask them to make sure to keep an eye on me. They'd actually want to meet my friends and their parents before they let me go. I hated this as a kid and as a teenager. When you're a teen, you want your friends and your freedom and privacy. It would be so embarrassing to do all this. This continued even after age 18 and until I got married at age 25.
So I can understand Elysse wanting to protect her child even though he is an 18 year old adult.
Elysse in her mind here is still thinking that her kid is still a "baby boy". Wrong. Now, he is an 18 year old young man and that is hard for Elysse to accept.
So that is why there is this power struggle.
It happens in alot of families

Everyone seems to think all teenagers are like Alex; "I'm an adult, I got 18 years under this belt." So I was always hearing stuff like "oh yeah you kids think you know everything, when your'e older you'll realize," and "You think you know it all at that age." I kind of wish I could've been confident and thought I knew it all. Instead, I always felt crippled by self doubt and painfully aware of my inexperience, and wondered, "where is this confidence that's supposed to come from being a teenager?" Because I often saw Teenagers portrayed as cocky and thinking they know it all on TV, so I guess I figured I would just naturally get that. Instead I felt like I was nothing and everyone knew more than me. I wonder how many people are more like me as teenagers instead of being the stereotypical cocky teenager? * Not criticizing the show just sharing some thoughts inspired by this scene. *

I know when you're a kid or a teenager, you think that your parents are trying to ruin your life but you often forget that your parents GAVE YOU LIFE! They only do what's best for you and they do it because they love you. Your parents show that they love you in different ways besides just letting you have or do what you want.

18 year olds think that their parents are going to suddenly rescind all power and authority of them on their birthday. That almost never happens. If you had a curfew the day before your 18th birthday then you'll still have one the day after it.

What kind of parents did you all have? My parents trusted me when I was 16, as long as they knew where I was I didn't have a curfew. Let alone when I was 17 I was trusted with pretty much running my life however I wanted. This whole super controlling parent thing is about the stupidest way to raise an adult.

@@Torsin2000 It's called discipline. It's because parents are no longer controlling enough that today's younger generation are out of control. There has to be a happy medium.

"...younger generation are out of control."
I think you have some shaded glasses looking at reality. Every generation's youth were supposedly out of control, and gosh darn those kids why can't they just grow up and stop causing a ruckus and get a job.
The reality is that kids are less out of control than they were when I was 18. "Discipline" is not some magic remedy. There are kids that get discipline and are more out of control than kids with no parental oversight at all.
A curfew for a 12 year old seems reasonable, knowing your 16 year old's plans and asking them to be back by a certain time is as well. If your kid is 5 minutes late, you don't lock them out of the house you say something like 'cool, glad you made it back safe.' If your kid is 2 hours late, you still don't lock them out of the house (one would hope they have a key anyway) you say something like 'cool, glad you made it back safe...so why so late?' Then you, you know listen to your kid and assume they aren't lying, then you say something like 'cool, we'll talk about it more in the morning let's get to bed' or something. If your kid is 18, they are an adult so you tell them hey just let me know where you are at so I don't worry and then you let them be an adult.
In my opinion, a lot of the "out of control" kids are the ones who have parents that never let them grow up and take responsibility, always stepping in to solve all their kids problems. Then when they turn 18 they have no idea how to make decisions on their own and do some stupid things.
There is a happy medium, but fuck if my kid is going to have a curfew when he's 18. I don't make him be a 12 year old forever.
