  • It's one of the few SUVs you can buy at the moment without waiting an eternity. But the 2022 Renault Koleos is one of the older cars in the segment in terms of its platform. Paul Maric checks out the top-specification Koleos Intens 4x2 to see if it's any good.

This is the 2nd Koleos we've had. Very impressed with both models. Currently driving the special edition formula 1. Lots of extras. And the presenter is correct. Renault was years ahead with styling and here's the proof. Still looks modern. Yes engine is noisy from standing start and up to freeway speeds but once settled in both freeway and town speeds, its fine. Extremely reliable and frugal on fuel too. Plus we got 5 years free servicing with our deal. Yes, I'd buy another.

Have owned a 2021 Koleos for a bit more than a year now (15,000 kms). Runs perfectly, looks amazing, and in my opinion the perfect combination- French design, Japanese engineering and powertrain, and Korean build quality. Not to mention the all-round parking sensors lol - best solution ever for those pesky Sydney carparks.
I remember checking out the Sportage and Rav-4s, even the outdated Outlander (at the time), but the waiting period was insane, not to mention how they had cost about $5000 more on average for the about same specs as a Renault (I was looking at the range topping versions of both since the kids really wanted a panoramic sunroof).
Great job Paul! More people should look into buying a Renault.

Even the 2024 KIA Seltos Sport+ has the old halogen globes!, If you want LED's front & rear, you have to opt for the top spec GT line, basically, another $10K for LED's.... Go figure!?

We are thinking of buying a Koleos, It looks so stylish & sleek. It's a lovely family car, Our neighbour & relative have one the have nothing but compliments about it! It's so comfortable & it has the feel of a expensive car , We are thinking of getting the Zen.

I have the latest model Koleos as Initiale Paris version, with 184hp diesel 4WD. It's so comfortable for long drives and has enough power to get up steep hills without problems. Not the fastest in terms of accelerating, but it's not meant to be driving fast. It's an elegant cruising car and I hope I can drive it for a long time.

Great review as always Paul. A few weeks back whilst waiting for the GWM showroom to open for business, the Renault dealership next door had their cars on display (and open); went for a sneaky look-see and was immediately impressed by the Koleos and of it's amazing features and styling..WOW! Then I saw the Arkana RS..damn!! Any chance of an upcoming review on the Arkana???

Driving Koleos Zen since 2018. Best thing is the key in my opinion. It’s not bulky tbh slimmer than other car keys I have seen until now. slides into front pocket like front pocket wallet and doesn’t look or feel odd. Another best thing is you don’t need to take out the key from your pocket even to lock the car. car automatically locks itself when you move away from the car which is a great feature.

I've got the koleos here in Dubai, Bought it when it was first launched in 2017. Amazing car i own two cars one is an outlander(2018) and one is this. In my opinion even after a 150k kms on the clock i would still choose this over any SUV's in its segment love the car and the reliability it offers. Cheers to anybody whos looking to own this beautiful machine.
P.S: In european countries idk why they offer pretty small engines but here they offer a 2.5L petrol engine which puts about 179 hp, so this car reaches about a 180 kmph without struggling after that till 220 kmph it goes but it takes a bit time(30 seconds).

In regards to “leave the key in your pocket” that type of key seems like it’d be more comfortable to have in your pocket than a traditional type of key that most other cars have.

i've had the koleos for 15 months, absolutely love it.. drives really well and ticks most boxes.. i've had number of work colleagues and friend admire the design etc. The features are way more than the X-Trail. agree about the keys though, not very practical .. infotainment is fine, works well... the 2.5l engine is quite good too

Bought 2017 Koleos ZEN in 2018. So far done nearly 60000 km. Absolutely loving the car!
However, I personally recommend changing the transmission oil every 50000 - 60000 km. The dealership tells you that it isn't necessary and you don't ever have change it but do not believe it, CVTs are known as unreliable transmissions and you probably want yours to last longer so do the fluid change I would say.

I have a Koleos Intens 4WD. Have had it almost 18months now and I have to say its definitely a cruiser. I do agree about the engine and transmission being quite rough sounding when pushing it but this is my daily driver and I drive in peak hour traffic everyday. Its very comfortable. The Bose stereo is one of the best stereos i've heard in a car and is tuned quite well for the space inside. I just missed out on the radar cruise control though. Wish I had that. It's not an exciting car to drive but its comfy and has a lot of features.

I own a 2016 Koleos Intens and have around 78k kms on it. Bought it because it has an X-Trail drive train and chassis, but the French styling and premium feel appealed to my wife. Engine is sluggish, exactly as Paul Maric describes. I had a 2013 Kia Sportage 2.0 Turbo diesel before it, and the Kia was much more urgent in highway overtakes and was generally a more enjoyable drive. Having said that... from a boring, domestic, practical point of view, I've been very, very impressed by the Koleos. School drop-offs, Sat sports runs and grocery shopping? Perfect. Commute M-F in start/stop traffic with great fuel economy (again I get around 8.2L/100km)? Perfect. Drive Melbourne to Sydney, the long way, with camping in-between, and car fully loaded with tent, esky, camping gear and baggage? Perfect. I've even gone through state forests around Melbourne on unsealed roads with some shallow creek crossings and steep inclines/declines on highway tires. No problems. It's cheap to service, only needs a yearly service, and has been mechanically trouble free (only issue I have had is battery needs replacing every 3-4 years as all the music/electronics/mood lighting that remains on once engine is off does seem to reduce the battery life). Overall... it's done everything my family has asked of it in comfort and with amazing sound (the Bose system is just great value). It's not the SUV that Gotham deserves, but it's the SUV that Gotham needs right now.

I have a 2022 Koleos Intens with sand grey leather. Absolutely love it. Was initially put off by the CVT but now I’m well and truly used to it, and it performs well for what I use it for (and has great fuel efficiency!). Features are amazing and it’s very comfortable, and it looks great both inside and out, particularly when compared to other brands/models. I know people carry on about how old the model is, but the looks still hold up, particularly when you compare it to something like a RAV4 which seems to be a segment leader but in my opinion looks horribly dated. Highly recommend the Koleos!

Nice review once again Paul. Add on front and rear spoilers and the side kick boards and it looks even better. The 4wd version pushes up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels as required. Around town it basically runs as a front wheel drive only but with the extra traction available when required. The vehicle also has 360 degree sensors and Auto Parking. The LED fog lights will also turn at low speeds to light up the drivers blind spot at night on either side of the vehicle. The rear seats can also recline. Overall still a very nice car to drive. Cheers...........

I have done 130,000Km in my 2017 4wd. 30,000km service interval is great. No issues, good economy good features for the price and I have towed a double horse float with 1 horse and handling and performance is great. Taken it mild off-road on camping trips and the full 4wd mode is effective. I'm keeping it to 200,000km Does everything I need. The cruise control when towing up the hills tends to use too low a gear and high revs but using the speed limiter mode instead it does those hills fine at a sensible quiet RPM.

Am considering as well but have you seen depreciation? 2 to 3 years its 40% almost. Funny he doesn't mention this like its not a factor. Also AC is screen based might be hard on the fly. 2023 model loses some features too like LED fog lights and bose 11 speakers. Not sure about the remote start if still on fob. And heated steering just wondering? See lots of these now so says something they look great !!

Date 31/01/2024. We traded in our 2017 Koleos for a 2022 Zen. Was pleasantly surprised to see how much standard gear it has over the 2017 model. I was so surprised I have paid a deposit for a 2022 Intens, which had even more gear on it. My wife’s new 2022 Zen is quiet on the inside and I notice the engine is quiet on the outside in idle mode. It seems there is a little less body roll on the new one. The tyres they use have more silican in them than the previous 2017. These cars have a lot more gear in them than most vehicles in the same SUV BRACKET. It is my wife’s 5th Renault and my second. I had a Renault Megan’s 1.9 diesel, for six years, traded it in ten years ago. That was extremely frugal, around trip to work was 100k. Highway travelling, I managed to get it down to 3.7L/ 100k, but averaged 4.0L/ 100k. I am looking forward to taking delivery of my Renault Koleos 2022 Intens.

Wonder what they offered you for trade in on your 2017 as I've seen the resale and depreciation is very poor almost 40% after 2 years Rival's are around 20 to 30%.: But I'm still hooked on the koleos not easy decision.

I have four gripes with my 2021 Dynamic FWD. 1st selecting the small AC button on the screen while driving , find that i have to move my eyes from the road to the screen to pinpoint this A/C button which i find is dangerous as you could drift on the road. 2nd. that the auto selection is on the LHS of the selector , are they cheapscates that they could not change this for RH drive cars, how much would it cost them to do this????. 3rd i have had it happen just once only but the whole screen went blank and i could not change anything and it felt like the temp went to hot, Had to take it in to the dealer , found out that they just removed the battery terminal and the system did a full reset. then all ok. otherwise i find it does turn heads with its looks and once you get to know how to accelerate the car then you can overcome that bungee cord effect a bit without getting ticked off with the CVT, dont think i would buy another CVT again, give me that gear to gear feel of a gearbox, and lastly, When riding in cruise control i find that the RPM goes close to max to keep the car speed , (yet the tree does not shrink), but what i have found works it to go into manual mode and then put it into either 6th or 7th gear then the RPM stays low, just haver to remember when i want to overtake to put back into auto,

Took one for a test drive last year, coming from a main family vehicle-Nissan X-Trail 2012 St-L and the level of kitfor the price was fabulous. Seats are super comfortable and there is plenty of room in the back seats for the kids, however, the 2.5L/CVT combination whilst adequate for around town, like our x-trail, takes a lot to get up to speed or when overtaking. The boot was also a bit smaller than the x- trail too. Unfortunately, the diesel has been discontinued, otherwise would probably have made it higher up our list. For a second family car, though, it's still worth considering.

We own a 2017 Intense 4WD. Nearly 130,000 on the clock and no dramas. Fuel economy is respectable. Have to agree the the engine is a bit thrashy with the CVT... but no other option.
We towed a 1400kg caravan for about 100km which it didn't really like. I wouldn't want to try to tow anything bigger for any longer duration with the CVT.
Interior appointments are way above anything else in its class. From factory the 2017 didn't come with Android Auto or Apple iPlay activated (don't know why) but after a bit of searching online I found a way to get into the firmware and activate it.
Would love to upgrade to a newer model, but disappointed that the new 2024 Koleos isn't going to be sold in Australia.
    Overall, a great car.

They should do something about the giant logo. It is a good-looking SUV that turn heads (still), but now looking a bit tired. It does need a facelift despite being still good looking. I am ok with CVT in a family car though I prefer torque convertors. But a CVT mated with a slightly powerful engine and minor facelift would make this car a great buy - either a 1.6L Turbo option or this engine tweaked like the new X-Trail to output slightly more power and torque.

I was close to getting a Koleos. Styling is nice on the exterior, interior is pretty lux especially in the white. Thought it handled well, reasonably smooth. The reason we didn't get it is because its safety features are SEVERELY underwhelming compared to the rest of the market and the infotainment / dash are pretty poor quality in comparison to others too. I could live with the dash, it's fine, but the infotainment / camera quality was really poor.
