Makashi: The Dance of Form II

- Form II
Other names: Makashi, The Way of the Ysalamari, The Contention Form
While Count Dooku aka Tyranus may be the poster boy for Form II: Makashi, we have seen others perform quite well with this lightsaber technique: Asajj Ventress, Shaak Ti, and the Grand Inquisitor. The same can be said for Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader, even though Form II is but a supplement in their separate fighting style; their physical strengths help overcome Makashi's major flaw.
Extra characters (in order of appearance):
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Luke Skywalker
Ezra Bridger
Kanan Jarrus
IG-100 MagnaGuard
Pre Viszla
Anakin Skywalker
Naa'leth
Karis
General Grievous
Bo-Katan Kryze
Luminara Unduli
Savage Opress
Music:
Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms; variant from "Dracula: Dead and Loving It."

Form 2 makashi also known as the hand stealing technique.
Well, Makashi was meant to disarm the opponent, oh wait...
Most of the people who were defeated by a Form II practitioner got their limbs dismembered
Darth Tyranus is the king of the Makashi Styles ✨
The elegance of it all
The lack of too much ridiculous spins and jumps makes it beautiful
Honestly, for a zen like religious order I'm surprised they didn't see swordsmanship as a way to control their emotions
They actually do have some philosophies behind the move sets of all forms.
@@wildfire9280 Could you tell me what are those? I made two Star Wars board games based on the Lightsaber Forms. Could do with such insight, to perhaps better refine the games.
@@Calixtus If I remember right it was explained in a video titled “The Star Wars Philosopher’s Guide to Every Lightsaber Form”. Hope that helps, I’m not an actual scholar I’m afraid.
@@wildfire9280 ah yes, geetslys
the best star wars channel imo
I love how everyone in this dance either fights with one hand behind their back or spinning
Needs more Dooku.
Well, Lord Tyranus, you're not the _only_ one who practices Makashi.
Agreed
DarthWill3 Still we need more of the D... that came out wrong...
I agree completely YOU DIN’T DO THE MASTER OF MAKSHI🤬
I never realized how well classical music goes with lightsaber fights
Same
The most respectable and high class lightsaber fighting form, the music fits it perfectly
Hungarian Dance, nice. Also nice to see the very short way Vader used it on Bespin.
Indeed. How much that display would've impressed Tyranus, were the old man alive, is anyone's summation.
And the Rouge One scene, as well.
He doesnt and didnt use makashi!!!
@@snemelc270 Actually, he does. Read the _Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader_ and _Force Unleashed_ novel for references.
We're vader..
Nice video but makashi is not used in the fight between darth maul vs obi wan and qui gon jin
Not by Obi-Wan, no. But there are major hints that Maul and Qui-Gon used Makashi in this duel:
1. While Qui-Gon's main fighting style was Ataru, he rarely employed acrobatics in a duel. He was more grounded, a facet of Form II. Don't forget that Qui-Gon had been apprenticed to Jedi Master Dooku, a famed Form II practitioner. Suppose that influence had an impact on the maverick Jedi.
2. Maul certainly shunted Qui-Gon aside before moving to Obi-Wan while entering the Plasma Refinery Complex, a tactic later employed by Darth Tyranus aboard the _Invisible Hand._ And the way he lured Qui-Gon toward the laser gates was similar to the retreat of a fencer. (I know because I once took part in a fencing class.)
DarthWill3 Quigon stayed more grounded due it being a more grounded version of the form he implemented due to his old age
The older, the wiser. And the more refined.
DarthWill3 no. Being grounded is not a sign of Makashi. Shii-Cho, Soresu, Djem-So and Niman are all fairly grounded styles.
And Force pushes during the fight is a technique of Niman, if anything, not Makashi.
P.S. Makashi was not used in at least half of the fights shown here.
Makashi can incorporated into one's own personal style. Look at Darth Vader after his reconstruction.
And those well versed in Makashi can duel one-handed.
0:08 just take a moment to appreciate this. His MAJESTIC swings and elegant blocking. He's not using any energy at all, he's just smoothly fighting with no worries at all. Truly beautiful, is the second form
my favorite form, absolute best
Love how the slower duel between Vader and Luke is shown when the music gets more soft and quiet
I can see Maul using Makashi in the fight against Vizsla, however not so much for when he fights Qui Gon.
Maul was pure juyo in that duel Qui gonn having been trained by dooku may have used some slight uses of makashi in his ataru stance to make it easier makashi is one of the least taxing forms to maintain for a saber duel
In the epilogue of Star Wars Episode I Journal: Darth Maul, Darth Sidious writes that Darth Maul "is-was-an elegant fighter. Precise." Thus, Maul would've adopted a few tenets of Makashi into his fighting style.
Maul learned all the Forms
@@RA-gg2hw Yes, Maul's main form is Niman (form VI) which is a combination of all previous 5 forms. This made Maul unpredictably deadly, and even more so when paired with the aggression of form VII.
@@lordvader1993gerwell lord vader, Makashi is not very compatible to a duelist favoring double-bladed lightsaber. Wielding that thing requires the user to spin the weapon constantly and explosive full-body rotations, ducks, spins, step-overs. Even more unique, the saber has to be very close and moving in-sync with the duelist for maximal kinetic energy and protection coverage. Makashi's footwork is very grounded and usually follows a straight line, you can examine through the Djem So branch of form V, in which the footwork is completely inherited from Makashi. Maul's saber-staff is naturally perfect for form IV, V Shien branch and VII.
Makashi is my favourite saber form
Jedi: oh and remember to add a spin to your attacks or hold one arm behind your back
Padawan:to add strength to my attacks and power right?
Jedi:…
Padawan: T-To add strength and power right?!
Dooku performance and elegance >>>>>>> Star Wars duelists.
(he's not the best one I mean he's elegant asf, just like a Makashi user should be.
I mean he kinda is the best one so far in Star Wars media. Only contenders I could even see is Inquisitor Jerec or The Grand Inquisitor.
I'm reviewing this for the hundredth time... - I WANT MORE!
(Dooku is great)
I forgot that Vader used makashi when he was toying with Luke in Empire.
I wondered where that music came from.
"Children of the night. What a mess they make."
Yes, exactly. I see that you're a Mel Brooks fan. ;)
DarthWill3 yep.
DarthWill3 Now go, whilst I make him my slave.
Aaaaah. Aaah.
And stop that!
Stop it, you're killing me! LOL
Meanwhile, give me your analysis on this video. Long or short, either suits me.
DarthWill3 short and good
Others who are Makashi users: Darth Malak, General Grievous (he can use all forms), Darth Sidious (he as well can use every form), Jerec, probably Sev'rance Tann and Komari Vosa.
There is also Darth Nihilus, Xanatos (fights with "economy and grace"), Darth Talon (usually fights one-handed), Sora Bulq (Tyranus once dubbed him as a fencer), Kento Marek and maybe even Yoda.
@@DarthWill3 Yoda is the one I would doubt, imo Makashi is like an "Dark Side" users style heh.
General grievous doesn't really use all form, he uses Niman a mix of all forms to defeat an opponent quickly, while it can contain some makashi moves the form is not intended to focus on makashi.
The way of Dooku
lol the music reminds me of the mirror scene on Dracula Dead and Loving it.
Well form 2 is based on modern fencing, and dances like ballet were inspired by modern fencing, so this is accurate
You even got the Tarantowski Clone Wars in there. Neat!
Thank you! I've loved the mini-series ever since I was a kid.
The Grand Inquisitor looks like he’s genuinely having fun!
0:28 and 0:40 Is just perfect
Christoper lee has the best Makashi salute 😎
What would a makashi dijem so hybrid style look like? I wonder the possibilities that lay within…..
0:28 - 0:31, matches with the music perfectly and btw, this is my fifth time watching this video
Vader's "spin" that usually makes the opponent lose possesion of the lightsaber is actually part of form 5.
Yes but it also is a common fencing technique, fencing being the very thing form 2 makashi is based of off lol, some moves do cross over, i personally like blending form 2 and form 7 when i duel lmaoo
Good Music and good content
Hi, at 0:28 Dooku also used a bit of Soresu as a defensive tactic, because he was facing multiple opponents. (I think)
i dont know i've been practicing Makashi in real life for a great amount of time and the defense he uses seems like Makashi defenses but im not certain
I can think of 4 things:
1) All Jedi are required (or advised) to learn Niiman Form 6 after choosing their Main Form to maintain the competency of the basics of fighting with a lightsaber. Namely: lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat, blaster deflection basics, and using the force in conjunction with a lightsaber. Soresu is the base form of Niiman, then the best of Forms 1, 4, and 5 were added (supposedly). He'd probably had to learn Niiman.
2) Soresu is the form that immediately after Makashi, it probably had some elements of Makashi but was fined to defense and blaster deflecting tactics.
3) Experience: Dooku's Makashi is not completely pure. He tries to use Makashi in the purist form but the form itself had some areas it's lacking like blaster fire being obvious. He probably has to incorporate some tactics of Soresu that he learn from dueling others when he was a Jedi.
4) He could be actually using elements of Form 1 Shii-cho. It's great for facing multiple opponents and every other form is based on Form 1.
I am thinking, a mixture between Form IV and form II would create a very unpredictable yet deadly style. The grace and economic movement of form II and the swiftness of form IV. Maybe a more athletic type of form II? :)
Wickedly awesome
Thanks. Took me over a day to get it right, what with Windows Live Movie Maker being outdated and such. You have any idea how the new programs cost?
Correction
Maul never used Makashi, he was a master of Nieman and Juyo.
In order to learn those forms, Maul had to master the other five. And that includes Makashi.
i think you should do more videos like this one.
One video for each form
What do you think about it?
Awesome video
Bravissimo!
Alternate title all count dooku fights

What kind of music is this? Is it Tchaikovsky? I want to add that to my playlist. I will cook in the kitchen for this music.
Actually, it's "Hungarian Dance No. 5" by Johannes Brahms.
Дарт Молл с двойным мечом пользовался 7 формой боя, а не 2
Maul never used form 2.
His styles were forms 7, 6, 4 and sometimes 3.
Also despite Qui-Gon being Dooku's student, he never used form 2 either.
Awesome
Thanks a lot, dude. I'm pretty proud of it myself.
DarthWill3 NP
BTW, what do you think my profile picture is based off of.
Obviously the _Clone Wars_ micro series.
yep, it's one of my favorite shows, and Star Wars Episode 1-6 are my favorite movies of all time.
we all know this form was inspired by cossacks fighting style
Vader doesn't use makashi, he uses Djem-so the 5th form. But all the others are not that bad, except that obiwan used soresu and ataru against maul. And maul uses mainly juyo except against pre vizla but in the fight against qui gon he was just using juyo, he didn't use any makashi.
The video is pretty sick tho, I like the songs 👍
Vader mainly uses Djem-So, but the careful spacing and slow precision used in his duel with Luke is a sign he could have used Makashi. And the OP isn't saying that Obi-Wan used Makashi, or even Maul as much, but Qui-Gon's grounded use of form IV shows at least some Makashi ideas, and remember that Dooku himself trained Qui-Gon. Dooku also trained Ventress, and Jar'Kai isn't the only form with two sabers. Ventress uses a kind of double Makashi, although you're right that she also uses Jar'Kai.
I think in that brief fight against Luke in Empire, he used makashi when he was toying with him, but after Luke struck his shoulder blade, he switched back to Djem-so and just unleashed fury on Luke.
@@miggle6301 Yeah I was wrong about ventress she is a makashi user jarkai just mean she has 2 sabers mb.
If Anakin Skywalker didn’t get a prosthetic after Count Dooku cut his arm off, he’d be forced to use Makashi lol
I’ll see myself out 🤦🤦😂😂😃😃
Най-доброто...
Thank you, my friend.
It would have been great to have fighting stances like this in Jedi Survivor instead of saber + blaster... no one wants to use a fucking blaster in a game where you play as a Jedi...
Unless you're Kyle Katarn.
What was the music that you use?
Hungarian Dance, No. 5; version from _Dracula: Dead and Loving It._
@@DarthWill3 That is funny, because Christopher Lee, the actor for Count Dooku, plays Dracula many times
The video should be just Dooku, Ventress, and Shaak Ti. Only they used it.
Well, they're not the only ones. I've got some sources to prove that most of the others here use Makashi.
What about the Grand Inquisitor?
@@fiercedeitylink2019 He's certainly got the signs of a Form II practitioner.
Vader, the grand inquisitor and Maul were jedi killers. Makes sense that they know the form designed for fighting lightsaber wielding opponents like the jedi.
Lol
How dare you insist that maul used Makashi.
Sidious once described Maul as being "elegant" and "precise" in his fighting. Plus, Maul took his footwork pretty seriously. Both instances in _Episode I Journal: Darth Maul._
If that's not an indication of Makashi, I don't know what is.
Qui Gon was using elements of Makashi there, look again
he used makashi against pre vizla tho...
I hate that half of these just arnt mikashi haha
Most of the other jedi/sith used a bit of makashi in this so I guess you are WRONG
@@DrNoLife-x8unot necessarily they are more of a form 6 version of mikashi where it is reminiscent of but isn’t the form, just because they use a blade one handed doesn’t make it form 2, form 2 is about quick elegant low energy movements not the wide agressive strikes that are shown in the video, like maul does occasionally use it, but not in some of the clips, like against pre Visla, that’s more akin to form 5 variation or a form 7 of wide sweeping power strikes involving whole arm movement as opposed to the wrist based movements of mikashi, so indeed sir I am not wrong
