Thanks for playing! Appreciate the thoughts and feedback. More major updates on the way, the biggest at the moment being for combat.
Note that the publisher is Klei, the developer is a smaller studio called Sparkypants. That said, the game has been fun, I've put it on hold for now until 1.0 so I can enjoy the full experience, but the devs have been doing all the right things so far.
I'll add that estimating 15 hours of gameplay is way low IMO. I've got 36 hours on a much earlier build, and the new content certainly adds more to engage with. I've been letting it cook, but I'm almost certain I'll be able to get another 40 out of it when it hits 1.0 early next year, and that is with being vastly more efficient on the replay.
I wouldn't judge the play time based solely on the research tree, because there's content that revolves around applying the tech you have researched. For instance, once you have a mature school you can work on hatching and raising dragons (currently only one is available, out of IIRC 4 planned), which gives access to various quests and things.
For mass harvesting, double-click on a plant to select all of the same type on screen, then click the "harvest" button on the infobox that will appear. Alternately, click and drag over an area of the map that has the plants you want, then select the plant type out of the summary list that will appear, and then select "harvest". However, don't overload your people with tasks; make sure they have enough time to haul in the gathered items (if they get left outside they will get destroyed by rain).
Early on, I would not recommend placing luxury items in rooms that don't specifically have a requirement for them. Luxury does not have any direct effect on your people, it is only for meeting the requirements for specific room types (which can offer conviction bonuses), or to fulfill/avoid individual quirks (such as "hates mundane dining"). When choosing which rooms to build, pay attention to which personnel the room type effects; for instance, Dormitories only offer a benefit for students, not staff.
Also, you can use "T" to tilt the camera to see behind stuff.
I haven't played this game in a minute, but I know one thing I remember it desperately needed was a proper task list. Something to help you get your feet off the ground while learning to play the game. All it had was novels upon novels of stuff to read about all the different possible pages you could open, but nothing that really helped you learn while doing. I felt like I was just thrown into the deep end and told "Best of Luck". For me it didn't feel fun to have failed school after failed school cuz I was trying to learn the game. Or have a character that room that I found I built completely foolishly cuz I didn't understand the mechanics. Idk maybe that is just a me thing, but I would like some kind of direction in the game that you can choose to ignore once you know what you are doing.
Are you saying you actually want a tutorial? but humans don’t use those things?
@@phantom_blade555 haha I may be in the minority but I actually do want a tutorial! I hate flailing around trying to figure stuff out! I hate over bearing tutorials as well don’t get me wrong, but there is definitely a middle ground of helping me know what to do 😂
I personally struggle with the game too, mostly from the aspect of "what do I even want to do" and "where do I get this thing?" As well as some stuff in regards to rooms
The thing about the rooms is that while the idea is novel, I significantly struggle with building rooms cuz it demands certain things which I have no idea how to provide (like that one wall 3 blocks taller than the other thing)
It makes it very difficult to "upgrade" rooms as realistically speaking you'll need to tear the entire room down and then hope that whatever you built works to fulfill your needs
That feeling when you look up a game recommended by the mix master himself... And it's already in your library. Ya done your job my friend, well played. Much Love.
"Here's a wand with a silencer on it. Why? But I ask again: WHY?"
Hmm. At least is not a comment with a silencer on it.
Haha, easily one of my favorite K&P sketches ^^
Presumably to make it silent. Why else would you put a silencer on something? =P
It's for that considerate night-time magick.
"You're a quiet wizard now, Harry."
To make defenestrations more tactical, of course!
I love the art style of this, so fun!
I like how it plays like a 2D base building game but all the rooms have depth so you can decorate in 3D.
Yo Splatt! I know you don't read the YT comments much but I just wanged (wanted* that was a too funny to change typo) to say I hella appreciate your content. My pc died like 10 years ago and I've never been able to get it fixed so i cant even play the games you review but i still watch most of your vids. I dunno why but your vids are soothing/hella relaxing and i regularly put them to help shut my brain up so i can sleep lol. I'll usually watch them properly as well but thats how i discovered they help me sleep! Anyway rambling! Thanks Splatt!
I played this way back in a test pre release and i kinda enjoyed it,its the chill game you play between the triple A's you spend the majority of your time on,a really cool filler.splatt you can just click on the harvest tool when your paused, yes slightly more effort but not a game changer.
Holy Magi-carp, a wizard school game with proper features, dope!
Playing this while watching RedZone with the rain hammering at the window. Absolute bliss!
I played this months ago when it was released in early access. I already had a ton of fun with it back then. I never felt like I was merely waiting on the research tree, there was always plenty to do, whether it was building, fighting or managing students.
I want a "Monster Academy" game thats a cross between something like this, and Dungeon Keeper.
Fascinating - one of the games that will stuck in my mind..
This looks fantastic. Finally a non-deckbuilder again :)
Well, if you read the steam page, there is a roadmap, the game should be finished by january the 25th and of course endgame content will be add near the end ^^.
"let's go with darkness mage" >>> select Earth -.-
Maybe it's a very *chuuni* earth mage =P
It was night time on Earth. Ergo... DARKNESS.
I am constantly reminded of the relentless onslaught of time when Splat says, "we looked at this game some time ago" and I'm like, was that not just a couple weeks ago? Oh god it's been months-years.
Y0 got me at "Kolonoskopi", over seventyfive and no colon deep examination WITH A CAMERA. I would consider that a win. Dwarfs, good with mechanics, the imagination thou. BL1,2,3!!! GO GO 4!!
Very chill game. I think I might give it a try.
Imagine a game like Rimworld but in the Avatar the Last Airbender universe, and in the beginning, you can choose which nation you want to be a part of, each with their strengths and weaknesses.
Niiice....in my gamer experience u can never go wrong with Kley-games, if u like their genre at all.....always polished, always fun. For me a must-have for sure. And I know, their EA will have steady progress....coz its not only a 1 or 2 ppl-company, where game-progress slows down quite a bit sometimes ..(manor-lords...xd)..
Alan: Prefers sharing a bedroom with Brandon
Oh my god, they are roommates
I love Klei games. I have a stupid number of hours in Oxygen not Included. This looks right up there.
ThankYou SirSplatt
Hey, a fellow Reel Big Fish enjoyer! 🤩 Love that band 🥰
I believe the issue you had with the flooring was placing a single tile floor on the left, then trying to place the rest of it.
Recently picked up this game again after the initial release. Feels like a much more balanced experience now with tweaked mechanics and interface improvements. I've yet to play with the very last of the game mechanics though.
I remember playing the demo it was pretty fun
When you like Rimworld and Harry Potter you will like this
@@NeroTheAngel I do like RimWorld about 2.5k hours in it last time I checked
If you play this game on highest difficulty, there is a lot of things to think about, you cannot let you colony run by itself.
At least for the early mid game.
And i think this is a really good thing, the normal mode feel normal, and the hard mode feel hard.
Except for the combat at the time i played, everything felt good enough balance wise.
I think the combat part will be rework soon so i will try it again then.
I had 2 long session of gaming with this title at 2 very different versions and it was great :)
Instant like and subcribe for Reel Big Fish haha
elfman-esk soundtrack that's all you hadda say
Reminds me of Spellcaster University.
Except that was a rather poor game.
1:02 i don't need wizarding school to shoot fireballs out of my ass. Taco Bell already does the trick.
That's so orc-style! xD
There is that one particular type of Ramen that does the trick too.. sometimes I have the feeling it is a combined spell.. at least the lights dim when I cast it.
Yeah there's that, but personally I find it easier and more pleasant to just be William Wallace.
@@TheJeremyKentBGross How do you think William Wallace gained that power?
Hey, just like rim world double clicking on a rock will select all rocks on screen. Zoom out to select more. Oh ... you can click and drag to select everything too. ctrl click to remove what you dont want.
Looks fun.
lol, literal nerdcastle
Doesn’t really sound like a game as much as it sounds like life now
“I’m prettier than this man”.
I played this before and I hope they fix the optimization of the game.
Edit: they did not, you could feel a performance spike in a long run.
This guy doesn't know the difference between earth and dark.
Makes an earth wand and calls it dark.
Victoria: Likes using dark. >has earth wand
Having windows in your rooms also helps with the lighting/mushroom issues.
Just like in real life.
Is there synergy between students and or teachers using combo magic like water then lightning for big damage?
Dare Shores
🖤
Runolfsdottir Circles
UI of this one goes totally against Steam Deck usability
Looks great but I am over any ealry acces. We will talk after 3 years maybe.
I don't know why but I find the game frustrating. Especially in the very beginning even you're just trying to get a roof up. Then you get an hour or so in and realize you've laid your base out wrong
A septicle?
Why would anyone spend resources on cosmetics?
is this a spellcaster university clone?
No, it's a similar concept, but this is an actual game with interesting mechanics and much more meat to it.
Comment for the comment god!
This looks like a copy & paste job of "Spellcaster University" down to the artstyle??? Mixed in some Rimworld ... intresting
It's not particularly like Spellcaster University aside from the premise and the sidescroller-but-with-depth presentation. The actual mechanics and gameplay are pretty different.
Beeing forced to be a Mac gamer cuz of university and job sucks cuz good games by small to medium sized devs tend to not have the support
The Demo before was amazing and had great eldritch horror athmosphere.
Now it feels like a huge downgrade, it became rather boring and monotone, especially with the new no- brain-spam combat system
Wait… is this a new game that’s like a grim version of another wizard school game… or did that game get a serious glow up?
Edit: the game I was thinking of was Spellcaster University from 2021.
It does look VERY familiar. There was a darkness consuming the world in there too, no?
hey splat check out mechabellum
I've followed you in steam and youtube for a year now or so as a good source of info for new indie games that may be worth it and gameplay footage, but something that bothers me is that you are always positive & recommend every game you review... which kind of makes it hard to know which games are good/bad, and makes your reviews/opinions feel biased/forced/bought out. I wish you were harsher/more honest with your reviews, or include games you didnt recommend. Just my honest feedback.
Firstly, your feedback is inherently valid in its own right. And for what it is worth I do think splatter is generally glass-half-full in his videos.
That being the case, I can recall a few titles just recently that have earned the 'needs more time in the oven' verdict, and which have had specific flaws called out. I will validate that I don't think he has ever completely eviscerated a game, but I don't think he has much interest in reviewing obviously bad titles because that wouldn't be fun.
Maybe this is just me, but I don't treat splatter's videos as proper reviews - he is only giving first impressions and doesn't generally deep dive into review topics beyond early gameplay like settings, late game/replayability, multiplayer, bugs, etc. (unless something notable stands out during those first impressions). IMO the best use-case for his videos is to see whether the gameplay looks interesting to me. I supplement with steam reviews to know whether something is a bug riddled mess or content drops off after 5 hours.
Admittedly I don't follow him on steam, which is almost certainly a completely different dynamic, or perhaps you didn't happen to watch the more negative 'reviews' I saw.
Again saying its the finished product when I actually look it up to buy.
Dude please, its not finished, its in Early Access, please make that clear, its not the same.
It has content of an average released game already.
It takes less than 5 actual seconds to click on the steam link and see the early access banner.. why are you talking as if splat made some huge mistake?
@@Woeboez Cause its his job?
I'm 8 minutes in and he's said it's early access like 5 times. Get there faster.
@@maximilianneumann4785 You never make minor, completely inconsequential mistakes at your job?
I wanted to like Oxygen Not Included but yup, just too much for me.
WTF, you did not like ONY? Sorry, Splatt. Got to de-abo you now ;P
magic sucks. science in space and alien planets is my GOAAAAAAAAAAAT
*Sauron would like to know your location.*
@@Grogeous_Maximus hello fello maximus!!! you are indeed very handsome, as we all are, but does sauron do space science? i thought he was some kind of goofy elf that went incel after his giant spidey girlfriend tried to eat him after sex. now he picks on little people.. that guy?
