I discovered this film about three years ago and been in love with it ever since. Rutger Hauer was the perfect choice to play the antagonist of this film.
When I saw this movie back in the day (1986) I never considered it a 'horror' I thought it was something else entirely, although I still can't say for certain what that it. It's an underrated classic andcertainly one of the iconic 80s movies that has never been replicated since, a true masterpiece of suspense, mystery and stunned amazement for 38 years......
When you are menace, intimidation, and indifference personified, you don't explain yourself. The script gets this. John Ryder doesn't explain himself to Jim. Certainly not to anyone else. And the audience is not given such courtesies either.
1:32 "Work again, work again, jiggety jig! Gooood MORNing, J.F.!" 3:42 the detective questioning Rutger Hauer is the same actor who played Quark on *Deep Space 9*
Watched this for the first time with a couple of friends last year. Everyone was absolutely speechless at Rutger Hauer's performance.
It is one of the greatest ever. The diner scene where he sits down with Jim is pure cinema.
Vastly underrated movie, dunno why didn't become a canonical classic.
Yes: the perfect villain played by the perfect actor!
I would have chose this guy (Rutger Hauer) of the late Richard Lynch. Both would have been perfect 👍

“There’s a killer on the road” 🎵

I always wondered if this movie and the tv series the hitchhiker from 1983 was connected?
Why do people keep making videos using the making of this film and passing it off as their own?
THEY SHOULD HAVE used C Thomas Howell as The Hitcher in the Remake,
why? he would have been totally miscast.
