    There's so many years worth that it's nice to get feedback on where to start

  • @sosa2mars

    What I often recommend people is to start off with Batman: Year One followed by The Long Halloween and then Dark Victory.
    To me those 3 stories are my permanent head canon for the character’s first 3 years and they just tie together so well. Seeing How Bruce’s character starts off at the beginning of Year One and then at the end of Dark Victory is just so satisfying.
    Not to mention the way we see the fall of the mob and rise of the supervillains in those 3 stories is also really great.

      Whats your opinion on Year 2? I personally enjoyed it a lot, even if it (SPOILERS AHEAD) rewrote Joe Chills death

    • @sosa2mars
      @sosa2mars 3 роки тому +5

      @@brendanferrell9519 I am personally not a big fan of the story myself but to each their own. I’m also not too keen on the idea of Joe Chill being a hit man to take out the Waynes be it for a supervillain or the mob or whatever, much rather prefer him being a poor/homeless petty crook who is a product of his environment.

    • @brendanferrell9519
      @brendanferrell9519 3 роки тому +3

      @@sosa2mars Id agree with that. I wasn't too happy with the Chill stuff either, but the rest of the story is quite good imo. Its certainly one of the lower tier young Batman stories in terms of novels, but overall I still though it was enjoyable

    I would actually recommend not reading TDKR to start off, because while it is a really good story, it is a deconstruction of who Batman is, so it isn't as effective to someone who doesn't understand the core of Batman yet.

    • @hughjass7777
      @hughjass7777 3 роки тому +34

      I would assume that's why you read Year 1 first since that fully establishes a lot of what Batman is about. Though most people can also understand deconstruction too without having a huge background. Plenty of first year comic readers still appreciate and love Watchmen for example

    • @bradenhogan2
      @bradenhogan2 3 роки тому +9

      I say the same thing about Killing Joke. If you’re going to start with any deconstruction book, make it Year One because it’s actually the start of post Crisis continuity anyway so it’s a great jumping on point

    • @calebmurphy9406
      @calebmurphy9406 3 роки тому +7

      I think if you're looking to start reading comics, you probably have a good enough understanding of the character to relate to TDKR.

      I agree with this. When I started reading Batman people were telling me TDKR and when I read it I found it kind of overbearing and hard to follow. I found Year One and The Long Halloween MUCH more enjoyable as stories to just jump into.

    • @z-rex6068

      You don’t need to worry about that, these are comic storylines that came out ages ago and you buy the graphic novels so that the comics are there all in one book so you don’t need to worry about keeping up with storylines. All of these books came out ages ago as well and are old so no there’s worries with keeping up with an ongoing series or anything, just stay away from current Batman comics for now then if you’re worried about that. That’s what I did.

    For new readers who already have an idea from the general cultural zeitgeist, Mun would actually recommend Batman: Hush. It is pretty self contained with its own standalone villain and storyline, while also giving pretty much an entire tour of the Batman universe. We run through enemies, allies, side characters, all getting at least some introductional narration from bats. It's made so you can understand what's going on even if it's pretty much your first comic. Mun believes it to be the best spot to just jump right in.

    I'm 19, and I've probably been a Batman fan since I was 9 or so. My entry point was definitely Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, all of the many DC animated movies, and the Arkham Games. However, I always feel kind of insecure about calling myself a fan since, from middle school to today, I've only read Batman: Under The Red Hood, Batman: Hush, the first four years of the Injustice comics (if you want to count those), the first volume of the New 52 Court of Owls storyline (I bought it thinking it was the full comic), Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, and The Dark Knight Returns. I also currently own The Killing Joke, but I'm waiting until I finish another book to start reading it. Comics that are definitely high on my list of priorities would be Year One and Long Halloween. I've also obviously consumed a ton of other Batman related media, but in terms of comics, I could count them on two hands. I've been saying for years that I'd love to get into reading comics and, to be honest, I don't think I'll ever be a month to month reader. But, I'd love to read just enough to not consider myself a complete poser.
    Edit: Oh, and I've also read the first 7or 9 issues of the Arkham Knight prequel comics which I actually did read month to month until I gave up.

    I still think Batman: Hush is a great intro for Batman, not only does it introduce most of Batman’s rogues gallery and explore his relationship with some of those characters but it comes off as super readable and accessible & Jim Lee is always on point with character & location designs, colours etc. They have the perfect combination of Loeb’s experience and near enough mastery of writing Batman by that point and Jim Lee’s very fresh and innovative styles, it’s just a great book. I won’t say who for spoilers but there are some characters that i think it’s their best appearance of.

    I think Batman Hush is a pretty good story to get into early. All of the characters should be familiar to people who have at least some batman knowledge and most of them have small descriptions given to them that allow even new readers to somewhat understand the characters, and it's a classic and beloved Batman story. edit: Batman Under the red hood movie is also very good to start for people who don't want to get straight into the comics and Is basically where I started my comic journey

    I think as an alternative to this video, you should do one where it’s a showcase of where to start with looking into the character of The Joker, who is actually my personal favorite character in comic book history, and I believe he has the greatest and most unique character dynamic with a hero I have ever seen (even more than any of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery). And if you want, you can pair him with introducing The Batman Who Laughs if you bring up his series within the Dark Knight’s Metal continuity.
    P.S. I just got started on the Scott Snyder New 52 books and I like it so far, but I have yet to see what horrible terrors Joker does to the Batfamily when I read Death of the Family (yes I know he starts cutting faces off).

    • @marlin2131
      @marlin2131 3 роки тому +2

      Grantimus Prime imo, crisis on infinite earths is a lot of fun but it’s super complicated and the story behind isn’t all that great. If you have a good knowledge of Batman and want to expand out into the wider universe I would recommend the first run of New 52 Justice League comics (would have to check but pretty sure it’s mostly Snyder/Lee) as they are great for learning more about each member and it’s perfect for the way the group slowly expands outwards and you get to meet the wider universe supporting characters while also gaining good understanding of the core teams’ relationships with eachother. If you can track down the original copies too they include some other great titles like the Shazam origin, JLA and Justice League Dark, but if you aren’t interested in the current continuity then i seriously recommend the stuff that comes immediately before it. The Green Lantern stories Blackest Night and then Brightest Day are an excellent short history of the core universe (Blackest Night is more famous but i personally prefer Brightest Day). Once you have a good idea of those characters, Flashpoint is a really great AU to explore them in a new light and just a great story all-together

    I think suggesting more stories such as the "Long Halloween", "Dark Victory", the Knightfall trilogy, etc etc would give a better understanding of who Batman is to a new reader. I'd suggest on recommending more runs too, and TV shows would be nice.

    The "problem" with DC and continuity is that every time they reset it with a Crisis event, they didn't go full gusto and start over. COIE was confusing because stories from Flash, Batman, and Green Lantern spilled over. And their Retcon origins for Superman, Batman, Wonder woman, Green Lantern, and Hawkman were all done years apart between 1986 and 1990. Same thing with flash point. Batman & Green Lantern carried over as well.

    I would recommend Detective Comics #33 Nov.1939 which is a simple but effective two-page origin story of how a bat flying through his window inspired his Batman persona n Year One, which is a very powerful origin story that describes Batman's beginnings perfectly in detail. Thanks for being so supportive of Batman cause it really feels great to see real Batman Fans like U since I'm a huge Batman Fan myself. Keep up the great work bro!! 👍🙌🦇🦇

    Batman, is my favourite character of all time, always has been, always will be, but i dont exactly have the money to buy all the comic books i want, so i watch videos after videos going over every character and every story in the batman universe, yet, i still dont feel like a “true” fan, and i really really want to change that, i want to start reading as much comic books as i can, but its also hard to keep up with the latest issues, and tips on how i can keep up with them?

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  3 роки тому

      first off I wouldn't let anyone quantify what a true fan is for you. For example I have not read any comics in the last year. I'm still a fan of the character, but I think that the quality was really falling off for a while and I'm taking a break. there's plenty of ways to keep up with it but one that's actually underrated is checking out the library. Believe it or not they have a ton of graphic novels that can help you kind of catch up on whatever you want to read.

    Another alternative to the comics I'd recommend (and I know I'm definitely not the first to say this but screw it) is Batman the Animated Series. It's where Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill got their start before the Arkham Games and is considered by many to be the definitive Batman. Only thing is it doesn't go into his origins too much though his character is introduced and portrayed perfectly without you really needing to know the details of how he got there. Plus all the episodes are stand alone stories so you can watch in almost any order you want.

    I agree with the list, I might add The Long Halloween as an addition to Year One. Not only does it kinda feel like an unofficial sequel (with elements of Jim and family as well as the year long story formula) because I feel like it’s a well rounded interpretation of Batman. There’s plenty of action segments as well as showing off the gritty noir/detective nature of the character. I think it also works outside of being a Batman story, so if anyone I was talking too liked the dark knight film or even just crime drama stories I think it would be an easy recommendation. Plus the long Halloween does a lot of things the dark knight tried to do but had the added benefit of having more space and time to tell a deeper and more human story, but it still has similar elements to recommend to someone who just watches the live actions movies. Either way, I look forward to seeing what other characters get this treatment.
