One of the good things about Aquilan Shield is that that stratagem you mentioned as a negative is amazing with them too. If your unit can already heroically intervene, the strat let's you do it at 6 inches instead. This makes avoiding combat with them almost impossible.
Its good to note, that the 1 cp Heroïc interventions says: that if the unit can already intervene they may do so at 6 ".
Wich means Aquilan shields can intervene 6" army wide with the Strat. That is what makes them good
In a vacume, all shield host traits are the strongest subfaction bonuses on the game with the exeption of maybe space marine chapters. The problem isn't that aquilan shield is a bad subfaction in the warhammer standard. Its quite amazing tbh. The problem is that the lost oportiunity cost of not taking other, stronger shield hosts Makes aquilan shield a weak custodes subfaction. It would be great if the other ones were weaker or if it was a subfaction in any other faction that focuses on melee.

The Shield hosts are all very good in fact, but Emperors Chosen are so useful in a world where you are confronted with so many sources of mortal wounds!
Against anything that can't deliver Mortal Wounds but is good in CC, Shadowkeepers would possibly be better, but i feel it rarely outweighs the 4+++ and the extra rerolls are fantastic for Bikes and Dreadnoughts particularly!
I have also played aquilan Shield, and the one thing they can do that is hilarious is a standard Shield captain with both their Relic and Warlord Trait, as well as the Trait that gives a 5+++ (or the one that gives -1 to hit as well) Then give him "swift as the eagle" as well. I have charged this guy into a Dimachaeron, and he literally tanked that thing for 3 entire turns, until i finally had my Dreadnought kill the bug, and i was using only the Emperors Auspice to deny some kind of rerolls he gave himself. Hilarious!
I am honestly going the ones with extra protection against mortals. They have saved me so much

I fell in love with the Shadowkeepers the moment I saw their colour scheme. In the old codex they were extremely powerful and a lot on fun. until now I played only two games with the new codes and those times as Solar Watch. Being a Blood Angels main I felt just like home xD but I will try the Emperor's Chosen the next time I play because I only heard great things about them.
Dreadhost + Vertus praetors + Callistus ka'tah is such a cool combo for suddenly blowing up things or murdering hordes from nowhere

I really appreciate all your videos, specially the adeptus custodes ones. I'm just getting into Warhammer and love the custodes aesthetic. Been painting up all shield host chapters and find painting shadow keepers and aquilan my favorite. The inverted colors of black and gold look real slick and the purple pairs really nice with the gold. Love all your videos. Really informative and help a noob like me really understand the game!
im a simple man. i painted my boys as dread host so i play them as dread host. the fact that I love terminators so much is definitely icing on that golden cake.
Shadowkeepers all the way. I loved their colour scheme, and since then I've just been playing them, powerful or not!

I know right?! I just got into 40k this past year and found these golden banana bois to be my favourite. Learning the lore a bit here and there i thought there were like 2 or 3 shield hosts but apparently there are way more.

Dude you regularly have perfect timing! I picked up a kill team this week, which funnily enough is a 500 point army if you get a box of wardens with your guards. Also the books make me wanna take valerian and Aleya even though Valoris is a monster. I was considering emperors chosen or solar watch so thanks!

Solar Watch for the win. Advancing and getting a +1 to advance and activating calistus in turn one and then giving a unit advance and charge can be so brutal if going second. I love it
Dread Host, I read that one....n that was it lol. To me it was the best lore. And just fit me.
Solar watch venatarii can reliably charge T1 with their spears (not usually as good as the pistols) they can beat stuff up
Now I know emperors chosen is played 80% of the time.. but me personally hehe I play Dreadhost. Because I run 3x2 allarus, X2 Galatus a telemon -1cp to DS. And pendent. With a Vexilus +1A banner. Then I take a blade Champion with castellans mark so I can redeploy the two Galatus in D.S and turn 2 I DS all of that except the blade champion with a allarus captain with the relic axe. with reroll charges.. that's MY CORE 🤣🤣🤣 the other units are Trajann X5 sagg and 2x3 guards with shields.. it's my favorite list and it's fun.
Yeah, if you go with the Castellan's Mark and 2 Galatus it makes total sense to play something that allows you to re-roll charges.
Which shield host would fit in a kill team role? say exploring back water worlds in the outer rim of the galaxy.

I don’t play too competitively but I’ve used the emissaries imperatus and won three games easily vs blood angels, imperial fists and grey knights. The fight first rule is probably the strongest option if you are fighting other assault armies, especially with the space marine profile.
I'm a brand new player. I chose Emisaries as my Custodes. This fight first army wide must be very strong surely. Seems to be ignored a bit. If you get charged, you get to force turn taking in the fight phase, above that however if you charge in, you will also fight first in your opponents next turn. Which means you will always be ahead, 2:1 in fight rounds .
So play aggresive and double le your attacks in the aggregate.
@@carygalia9035 that’s exactly my line of thought. It does get weaker the more your opponent relies on shooting/psychics but it does guarantee you remain the king of hand to hand combat
Exactly! But I kind of like that, i'd rather have an army that is welldesigned and has a good balance of purpose with some weaknesses, I wouldn't want to be OP. Also for a new player like me, it's nice to have a straightforward army with an easy to grasp set of abilities.

Yeah I know Custodes are doing well atm. Definitely going to stick with Emissarius. Though I'll need to get some games in. Still trying to get a hand on Strats. Any good tips for strat choices?
Did any of the forge world stuff get auric weapons?
So newbie here trying to figure some things out. Does the warlord trait for the emperors choosen give +1 attack for each enime the warlord kills or is it units his army kills? Also do the fighting styles last all game long or are they all one use?
From what I was seeing on Reddit the fighting styles last all game. I could be misunderstanding, though.

emissaries imperatus is easy way to destroy meta lists - chosen AC, AdMech, Needs, and some Tau. But in meta stupid limits which so useless when you play against normal player

I love the look and lore of Dread Host but Shadowkeepers look like the better option because my usual opponents play Sororitas and DA
Another negative to the aquilan ignore -1 is it makes shield custodies literally useless. The +1 to save from the shield already makes AP 1 do nothing. As does the cover vexila
Shields are still better against -2AP, saving on 3 instead of 4
@@ComplexConcept but the ignores 1 AP is useless
You can stack those, so ignore -1, -1 from the shield, and even a -1 from terrain will make us save on 2’s with -3 AP
@@timcole6351 ignore ap1 doesn't stack with the other 2, it wouldn't take ap2 down to ap1, it ONLY affects ap1 attacks. The other 2 do stack though
@@ComplexConcept yeah I just looked into my book, it only affects -1 AP. Correct me if I’m wrong on this one though, if you have a shield guard with a banner man on dense cover you will be rolling 2’s for -3 AP?
this video lies! They only have emps chosen. Also shadowkeepers is not a shieldhost, its a buff you can give units with strats and abilities!

obviously i took the piss here, but this is every janitor list i have played against and most turnament lists i have heard of.
Shame anything that will play is Emperors chosen, just cuz MW are such a pain its not funny that 1 part of trait on 1 host turns out any competition xd
