    Correction: Hector did have at least one son as Joaquin Salamanca (whom Jesse kills in the episode "Salud") is his grandson.

      Hector was probably the most likely to turn on Eladio besides Gus, because of his ego and entitlement to the cartel. Although this is mainly explored in Better Call Saul.

  • @aguy559
    @aguy559 Рік тому +8

    1. Gus and Hector were different from one another in the sense that Hector personalized EVERYTHING and Gus only personalized ONE thing. Avenging Max.
    2. I think a distinction has to be drawn between what’s typically attributed to sadism and what Gus did to Hector. There’s a difference between torturing someone as payback and doing it just because you get personal enjoyment from it. Even the animal he tortured “had it coming.”
    3. As god awful a human being as Gus was and as glad as I was to see him get his comeuppance in Breaking Bad, I would support virtually ANYONE who went after him, including Fring.
    4. After witnessing all of the horrible, despicable, things he’d done, seeing Hector forced to wear a birthday party hat and to suffer all of the other indignities he had to suffer was satisfying and, at times, comedic. I’m glad it was in the script.

    I don’t know if you mentioned it, but another reason Hector hates Gus is because he’s South American. In the cold open for the BB episode “One Minute” In a flashback, Hector calls South Americans “Dirty, Dirty People”. Basically, Hector was racist just like almost everyone in the Cartel and Mafia.

On the other hand although i do feel for Gustavo for his loss, he really is a snake in the grass, And is no better than the Salamanca family. With all that said at least Salamanca have loyalties to their family and coworkers, That alone is more honorable than Fring

    Probably my favorite Breaking Bad character. Just a ruthless old school gangster that would do anything for his bloodline. They definitely got the family orientated angry Mexican grandfather stereotype to a tee. (Even if his Spanish sucks.)
    Also it always annoyed me that the subtitles say "Family Is All" when it more closely translates to "Family Is Everything". Kinda hurts the meaning of the line.

    Can you do a short video on Juan Bolsa. I never understood what his role was in the story outside of being a middle man during disputes. Also I never understood why Gus also hated him to the point he felt to need to kill him, even though he was cooperative with him in every other scene. I feel like there is a more obvious and concrete explanation given in the show that went over my head.

    It was a notable rivalry in the background. You could spend a short vid just analyzing the faces they make in their final confrontation. Margolis added little expressions like Hector winking at DEA after the falseflag about confessing, and in his final scene he conveyed emotions like regret, rage, and even sadism. Gus was notably stonefaced until he went from bewildered to panicked....and then two-faced, of course.

    Are we supposed to celebrate Gus torturing an old man?
    Frankly yes. Hector was a horrific monster. Almost demonic. His suffering would end when he finally died. Abrahamic religions are wildly immoral in threatening infinite punishment for finite crimes. But mentally torturing a crippled old man who spent decades reveling in tormenting anyone unfortunate enough to have crossed his path simply because he had power, wealth, and no conscience is proportionate. I will never condemn Fring for anything he did to the Salamancas.

    I never felt that bad for Hector because he was an unrepentant piece of shit until he became crippled. BCS shows us that he was an awful person, even in his old age. His only redeeming quality was that he loved his family, but the majority of the men in his family are murderous psychopaths so 🤷🏾‍♂️ The only sad part was that Gus was just gonna keep Hector alive to torture him rather than just kill him.
    With that said, I do think a theme through BB and BCS is that when you prioritize revenge, or even self-preservation, you can become as bad as the people you’re in conflict with. Hector was clearly wrong for what he did to Gus, but Gus ultimately becomes someone who’s ideology isn’t that different from Hector’s. He is more cautious and pragmatic than Hector, but he’s still willing to kill innocent people or use them as pawns without a second thought. This cycle continues with Gus and Walt. As Walt basically spends all of Season 4 trying to protect himself from Gus, but ultimately ends up becoming arguably as evil as Gus. A conflict that was started by the death of an innocent child gets resolved because Walt poisoned an innocent child.

  • @BrendanPappas
    @BrendanPappas Рік тому +3

    I personally think that Hector was just as terrible of a person as a crippled old man than he was before it. He definitely would’ve carried out the same ruthless and immoral acts if he had been able to. The only reason you might take his side over Gus is because you are rooting for Walt and want Gus defeated. But logically, I think he was a much worse person than Gus because at least Gus’s horrible acts were because of a vendetta. Hector just liked it.

    @Activated_Complex Рік тому +1

    I dunno, I think Gus showed his worst side in dealing with Werner, with Nacho, with Victor, and with Hank.
    Hank was a dutiful, honest DEA agent, if rather understandably too hot-headed to act professionally when the criminals he is chasing bring his family life into their cat & mouse game. He had almost nothing to go on to confirm his suspicions about Gus Fring. Until that well-manicured psychopath tipped his hand to Walter White and, in so doing, set in motion the events which would bring about his own death and the destruction of his illicit empire.
    Victor was seen but could have laid low or been sent to Mexico or been given an alibi. Gus could have had one of his people pick up the phone and call the law offices of Saul Goodman. Walt, although he didn't know Victor was spotted at the scene of the crime, called it right. The chicken man brutally murdered one of his most loyal henchmen to send a message to Walt and Jessie.
    Nacho wanted out of the game and wanted to save his father. The greater threat to whom quickly became Gus and his henchmen, rather than the Salamancas. Showing a pattern that Gus would repeat in Breaking Bad, despite his assertions to the contrary, of hurting or threatening people through their loved ones.
    Speaking of which, while Werner was indiscreet, his attachment to his wife signaled that there was going to be leverage to use to ensure his silence in the future, without going to extreme lengths. Gus, whom we have established was not above making threats that extend to family members who are not in the game, would've known that. Werner's silence was at least as reliable as that of DOZENS of individuals who are privy to el gran secreto that Los Pollos Hermanos and Lavandería Brillante are front operations for something more. Certainly he would be inclined to keep his trap shut if he were informed at minimum, even without specifics, that other, more dangerous parties than the police would take an interest in him if he repeated what he knows of the building project. To give him some idea of the stakes involved. There was no reason to take him out, apart from testing Mike's loyalty, which after all, won out over his principles and conscience.
