With inflation currently at about 9%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains. Sure I'm all in on the long term game, but with my savings lying waste to inflation and my portfolio losing gains daily, I need a remedy asap.

In Canada you are not allowed to give a bill a name until it has been passed into law, you can only give it a number. That way none of the political parties can use the name of a bill as a cudgel like they do in the USA.

This is so true about the working poor and the i.r.s.
Back in the early 90s I had crappy jobs for about 7yrs and I was audited 3 time in 5 of those years.. it really ruins ones spirit. Now with this all going on I cant believe what my children and grandchildren will have to endure.. my heart is heavy for the working class as well..

True. I had a friend who was audited years back. After the deadline to amend her old reurns was past, the IRS admitted that they had made a mistake. Because of the settlement agreement, she was still stuck paying the additional taxes, interest and penalties that she did not owe.

The IRS should be abolished as it’s existence is illegal based on the principle that the US fought to be free of taxes and monetary extortion. The only taxes we should pay is sales tax. And there’s literal billions made in that respect yearly, but where does it go? IRS needs to be dismantled. Has nothing to do with country nor party. Has everything to do with more and more currency being stolen for illegitimate reasons.

About 10 years back I worked up four different ways to handle my small business and personal tax situation and asked a couple CPAs which way to go and how much would they charge? To inspire confidence, they said they didn't know for sure, but would be happy to charge me $1000 or so to do my return based on MY guess as to which way was best, and one even offered me a job helping him file other returns. Kinda like the help you get on IT questions from your internet provider. Been rolling the dice by doing my own ever since. 😬
Our tax code is virtually incomprehensible to the average small business owner and is incredibly subjective in many areas...and now they threaten increased enforcement with zero increase in simplicity. Super motivating for young folk aspiring to entrepreneur their way out of cubicle drone life!

That’s really the most important part about taxes. Spending it wisely and getting a better deal due to collective bargaining power. Great idea if our govt had brains it would do exactly what you speak of.

Shortly after that, San Antonio Express had an article on how a second agent can dispute a first agent and the taxpayer charged guilty. The taxpayer is still charged penalty, difference in tax, and (now) late fees.

With the IRS you're guilty until you can prove yourself innocent.
The problem is tax law is confusing. That is why we use CPAs or accountants to do it right. Sometimes they don't get it right and it comes back on you. So yes this is scary as hell because there are things you think you may be doing correctly and an audit of your taxes proves differently.
It's been designed that way purposely ..
Think of every small business you can think of, your dentist, your vet, your dry cleaner. This is their new target. Think how when you are renting space, paying employees and taxes and expenses there is so much to get right and by G-d you had better be right.

I met several IRS auditers in the late 1980s. In those days, you didn't have to have a 4-year degree, much less a CPA certification. Not sure about today.

I am a 60 year old who depends solely on SSI disability and I have received a bill recently for 10’s of thousand’s of dollars for IRS debt from 7 or 8 years ago from the IRS (which I was also on disability at that time as well). I don’t have that kind of money and every penny of what I do get, I worked my butt off for 30 years and contributed to SSI. Now what I do get feeds me and me alone!!! I am so stressed all of the time!!!

SSI is what the people that didn't pay into the system receive, that we taxpayers cover.

It is not really much confusing. The inflation Reduction Act is the same exact bill as the original H.R. 5376 (Build Back Better).
Democrat Voters, the ones who are screaming to “cancel student loan debt” are the ones supporting more spending. The more this crap goes through the less chance they get to “cancel” student loan debt. Roll on 2024.
When I paid off all my student loans it didn't get any better. And the higher my taxes were.

So I never received the third "stimulus" and I had my year of bank statements to prove it. The IRS still insisted I got it and therefore lowered my tax return for last year.. I don't have the time or resources to be fighting with them and that's exactly what they are counting on.
Apparently the median pay for an IRS auditor is $65,177...

They say they are spending $81B to "hire" IRS agents without mentioning that to pay their salary is going to cost $81B EVERY YEAR from now on, plus more for cost of living adjustments due to the inflation that this bill is not going to reduce.

I have been to an IRS office before when question about my business taxes andI was impressed with the quickly response when 3 boxes laid out before them of paper Yes paper work and they said after a few folders said ok you are ok.
No I said beforehand what's the reason for the investigation?

ME: I have a letter asking to provide documents and here I am, so now what?

There was a time when Americans were that glad to pay their taxes, they proudly publicized the amount they had paid on their letter-head. Do you remember Ronald Reagan ? Freedom? Self respect?

When I was a teacher, I donated to the school every year. I kept all my receipts and even made a report to justify the reasons for making particular donations in particular amounts - just in case.
Then I get audited and the IRS official tells me that the only way donations to any institution of education would be tax deductible would be for none of the parents/guardians of any of the students to use their child as a deduction with regards to education. I asked the agent how I am supposed to determine that. And he replied that I would have to get the tax returns from the parents of all the students.
That is absolutely not feasible. If someone asked for a copy of my tax return, I would never give it. And, I don't expect the parents to just hand them over to me, either.
I stopped donating money to help the schools where I worked because of this.
I also got a hefty fine and a letter from the IRS telling me that I am not supposed to discuss the matter with anyone.
It has been a long time since I had any trust or faith in the government.
