Props to Alaina: The Art of Airplane Propellers

  • Опубліковано 11 жов 2024
  • Alaina Lewis went to college to be a cosmetologist, but her successful business today is quite a departure from that original plan. She crafts beautiful airplane propellers out of maple, birch, cherry, mahogany and other (sometimes exotic) woods in her workshop outside Rolla, Missouri. She’s built thousands and no two are ever the same. Alaina makes careful measures to ensure her propellers meet her customers’ every flying need. It’s a skill she learned from her crop duster grandfather. And, she seems to be passing the love of the craft down to the next generation.

I purchased a new Culver prop from you guys about 14 years ago after talking with and seeing your grandpa fly one on his plane at Oshkosh. Drove to Rolla and picked it up. Got to visit with your grandpa and dad in person and by phone several times. Both great guys with great products who were very helpful. Thanks so very much for such a great prop and best of luck to you in the future.

Love wooden props. I met ART FRITTZEN back in the late 70's. His best looking prop was an 8 blade for a Hollywood wind machine.

I think technically this is not classified as a lathe. I would call it a dupli-carver, where there is a pattern that needs to be duplicated. A nifty process for both identical blades. Anybody out there agree with me?

I found this you tube series on prop making and it brings back so many memories to me. As an A/P mechanic on modern airplanes and jets. But I always had a soft spot for old pre WW2 planes even the WW1 planes I worked on in restoring them or just maintaining them at various places I was stationed. I have made small 1/4 scale props for RC plains. And I made one 60” prop for wall hanging.
I am glad that there is a company out there to help keep the small prop planes going.

Hello Alania, I love sentimental stories such as yours. This was a wonderful video with exception of the fact that you lost your grandfather. May he R.I.P. I am sure he is watching and feeling very proud of you. Beautiful propellers that you showed here. Listening to you telling about them reminded me of someone talking about roses. They are all lovely. However when one looks close if becomes obvious that each one has it's own beauty. I couldn't help thinking of how fantastic that it was that you did not become a Cosmetologist. You would have created beauty that disappeared after days or weeks at the latest. By taking over the shop you create beauty that can remain for decades, if not one or more life times. If I ever get the chance to stand in front of a propeller airplane I know I will check to see if it's a Culver. Bless you and your family... Robert

Oh my gosh this really made me choke up. I lost my dad in 2016! And i had to put my head down and tackle an 800 acre farm. My mom helps driving stuff though. I know exactly what youre talking about when you're sanding and you hear your grandpa. I always wondered if anyone else gets that while running power tools! Whenever im grinding or welding my mind just thinks and sometimes i swear i can hear him open the big wood burner stove while Im working to put more wood in. Ive never even lit a fire in it since him. Same ashes and pieces of wood still sit in it. Some things in the shop I dont wanna move cause he was the last one to put it there. Thanks for this video. If my airplane needed a wood propeller I know who Id call😁

The phone call thing gets me too at times with my folks😑😊. Nothing beats passion like that when it comes to custom fabrication. I bet your grandpa was so proud of you the day you decided to “help” him out with that prop hah! The one your daughter had made there might be a good side line for them. It looks like a good size for small shops, offices and homes. If you see this comment and she wants to sell a wall hanger let me know how to go about placing an order. It’d be perfect over my RC bench! Great story and I hope it continues to be a generational business.

    Greetings from Ireland.
Your video is a beautiful record of the unique mutual love and respect between Grand-daughter and Grand-father.
'Grandpa' was an amazing man and he was lucky to have an amazing granddaughter.
He passed on his skills and she was a willing learner.
Hopefully his Great-grand-daughters will continue the family tradition.
This short video is a real 'Gem', and warms the heart with repeated views.
    Congratulations to all involved.

Great story about an admirable business and owner.
The machine which cuts the shape of the propeller is not really a lathe. It is effectively a pattern-following horizontal mill which uses a circular saw mounting a dado cutter as the cutting head. A mill usually moves the workpiece horizontally, or rotates its position on a vertical axis, but this rotates the workpiece (the prop) on the horizontal axis in synch with the pattern. It's a clever setup; I don't know if this is how other props not made by CNC machines are made.

Just saw your social flight live interview. You were amazing👍
Which german albatros is your favorite? Mine is the d3 w the flate trailing edge of the rudder instead of the curved like on the dv.
I saw you were not into metal leading edges for your props. Have you ever considered aluminum tape since you already use clear leading edge tape. Shouldnt be that difficult. Cut it to length. Center it on leading edge. Than place leading edge face down on table and roll prop both ways to lay tape. Flip prop and repeat for othet side. Than just finish smoothing like clear tape you use. Should work. Youd know better than me. As always its a pleasure watching a master crafter at work👍
