      This film showed black excellence. The plot involved a successful black couple, who were both professional, and who wanted to improve their lifestyle. Black excellence doesn't exist without hardships, unfortunately. I think it was a realistic depiction of the times.

    This further made me realize that dark skinned sisters are speaking the truth. The beautiful dark skinned woman who played Lucky could have easily been cast in a movie like Sylvie's Love. But like dark skinned women have been saying, Hollywood seems to believe all black women should be represented by Tessa Thompson, Yara Shahid, Amandla Stenburg, Zoe Saldana and before Halle Berry, if the woman is beautiful and desirable. But when it comes to trauma or stereotypical roles, they can find dark skinned women. As a community, we jave to listen to black women and girls because "Them" made it so obvious. The wife and little girls were all pretty and dark skinned and had to do trauma. They had that black teenage girl put on white paint and see herself as ugly. Really? I watched this entire show. It didn't scare me at all. But it did pass me off greatly. All those actors deserved better.

    You've made some really good points. For years Hollywood has instigated and propagated black stereotypes, as well as keep traumatizing our commuinity with racism themed content. They have a habit of depicting our black families as broken families, with an emphasis on our fathers being non existent or other negative stereotypes. I'm convinced that the reason they have repeated these themes is so they can indoctrinate us to think that we can't have a happy family, a healthy life, or just be a character with a fun story that's positive. All the shows we used to have that were positive they either didn't promote it or they destroy the reputations of those people so it takes away from the positive message.

    Even though I agree with you about it’s time to have us in movies that dont focus on trauma.... but Themis a lot deeper than that.... what I saw when I watched was a black family over coming all odds. I saw a black family that stood together and faced and overcame their demons. That last shot is powerful to me because to me it signified even when we literally face evil face to face we still stand. We fight, we overcome, and became stronger.

    These movies and tv shows are especially awkward for black people like me who never really experienced racism. When I was a kid, I always related to the white characters in tv shows more than the black characters because I never really suffered. As a result, I developed a sense of shame and an inferiority complex because, according to the mainstream media, to be black is to constantly stiffer; doubly so if you're a black woman. There's also the fact that the mainstream media likes to sell a commercialized blackness to kids. To be black you have to dress in rags if you're a boy and scantily clad if you're a girl, only listen to hip-hop and rap, talk in a "blackcent" (ebonics), and only be friends with other black people. Since I dressed neatly and conservatively, loved alternative rock, spoke in "proper" English, and had mostly white and Asian friends, I wasn't considered black. I was always called an "Oreo" (black on the outside and white on the inside). Or even worse, I was "trying to be white" and a "traitor to my own kind." These movies and tv shows not only exploit black trama, but they also further perpetuate the myth that there's only 1 type of black experience and only 1 way to "be black."
    This also brings up a more significant issue of the adultification of black children. Has anyone ever noticed that white kids are allowed to stay as ignorant and blind to racism as possible while black kids are forced to learn some of the most gruesome facts about their history at early ages to "toughen up?" Balck parents are always expected to be hard on their kids and practically bully them so they "don't get eaten up by the world." This why corporal punishment such as spanking is so glamorized in black media and the black community. Meanwhile, white parents insist that they need to shield their kids from the horrors of racism to "maintain their innocence." This is why white kids come off as more childish and immature compared to black kids. Which has lead to black teens being more likely to be tried as adults than white teens. In the case of black girls vs. white girls. There's a common trope in media called the "strong black woman." Since white women are seen as docile delicate, black women are seen as tough and more masculine. This has led to black women being less protected than white women when it comes to sexual assault, regular assault, and even deaths related to birth and pregnancy. Black women are discouraged from being soft and delicate since we have to deal with both racism and sexism. We're also held to higher standard when it comes to dating and marriage. So many black women have been told to "stay loyal to our own kind." Meanwhile black men are applauded for dating white women. My own step father told me about all the murder, rape, and various other horrendous atrocities white men have committed upon black women when I was 10 because he found out I had a crush on a white boy. I get that black kids need to know their history since no one is too young to experience racism. However, it shouldn't be at the cost of their childhood. If not appropriately articulated, all it's going to do is make black children afraid of everything and develop a sense of dread that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

    Just had a convo with a friend about this topic and your video helped me understand why I have felt something missing and off when it comes to black movies and black representation. And even outside of that, I completely agree with you that trauma can be used as a part of a story but should not be the focus with no hope or solution for help, especially for young people. Some of these movies are so graphic and intense they seem a bit traumatic to even view. Ready for movies with black mystical creatures, ORIGINAL black princesses, and black excellence stories from history that does not center on the trauma of racism.

      So called blacks, native Americans, and Hispanics are gods chosen people the whites know and they have little time left to rule my Israelite brothers and sisters this series literally reaveals that we are chosen and cursed until we wake up. They are throwing it right in our faces at this point
      Deuteronomy 28:
      15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
      16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
      17 Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.
      18 Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
      19 Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
      20 The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.
      21 The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.
      22 The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
      23 And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
      24 The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
      25 The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
      26 And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away.
      27 The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.
      28 The LORD shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:
      29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee.
      30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.
      31 Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.
      32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand:
      33 The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway:
      34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
      35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
      36 The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.
      37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee.
      38 Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it.
      39 Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them.
      40 Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy coasts, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall cast his fruit.
      41 Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity.
      42 All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume.
      43 The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.
      44 He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.
      45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee:
      46 And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.
      47 Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;
      48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
      49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;
      50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:
      51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee.
      52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
      53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:
      54 So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave:
      55 So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.
      56 The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,
      57 And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
      58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
      59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
      60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee.
      61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
      62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.
      63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.
      64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.
      65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
      66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
      67 In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
      68 And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.

    Wanted to start off saying that I’m new to your channel but I love how articulate you are with all your points. Although, I disagree with the part about 13RW. I was an 8th grader when I saw the show and it meant a lot to me since I related to Hannah cause I was dealing with suicidal thoughts. Now I’m 18 and I recognise how bad the show was but I think it’s important for us to have shows where the characters don’t always get help. Like Euohoria. I’ve never taken drugs but I relate to Rue’s depression. Grand Army is a great show but there’s no way I could even tell my parents about rape or go to a therapist since I couldn’t deal with everyone knowing. A lot of people with mental illnesses can’t just go and get help so seeing movies and shows like Joker and Euphoria where the characters don’t get help is kind of comforting imo cause it makes me feel like I’m not the only one struggling. Because a lot of the time it doesn’t actually get better and I think people need to stop pretending that it does. This is all just my opinion.

      Thank you for commenting as this is a very interesting perspective. I personally believe that everything does get better even if it doesn't look like it at the moment. Yes, it can help to have those shows show what life may look like at the moment not looking so glamorized however, we also need to be careful about the impact it can have on other viewers who can seriously take these shows to heart and act upon them. We need to encourage more people to seek help and not keeping to themselves which then leads to a more destructive end. Not everyone can just phase out of these situations but it's important to have an open discussion about these things. So thank you so much for this !!!

    I agree 10000% we are NOT toys to be played with, hollyweird is profiting off of exploiting "Black Trauma" and I will NOT be watching Them and here's why : I dug a bit deep and watched clips of this series and got more into the storyline and me personally, I am NOT going to watch this series, I saw Get Out and US and I can watch those over and over again (which I have) but Them, from what I saw is 10000 times WORSE, this series goes overboard with exploiting black trauma and (not giving any spoilers) there is a particular scene that goes WAAAAAAAAYYY over the line, so I would NOT recommend this series, that's my opinion

    I was thinking about these films today and I said to myself these slavery films are evolving. Also to with the :begging for more representation", I really dont expect anyone to give black people anything. Tbh I think if black people want to see something they have to it. So if we want to see ourselves in various movie genres we have to make our own movies. 🤴🏿👸🏿 I've never actually seen Them before but watched a explained ending video that basically covered the whole series. I found it interesting how there was basically a whole cursed community-burial covanant type of plot. But yeah these films are definitely getting side eyed by me.

    I disagree I think someone things need to be seen and talked about, because some of these kids don’t know much about our history. My niece went to mostly white schools all her life when she was 13 I had to tell her who Jackie Robinson was and make her watch the movie because she hadn’t learned about him in school and her parents didn’t tell her who he was either.

      That’s our job to teach our kid’s not white people. They can’t tell us our history. And when they do they only tell us about the slavery part and not who we were before slavery.

    I knew it! I hope you’re not offended by this as it has nothing to do with your video which is awesome. But when I look at you, and I thought “ she is beautiful And she has a more west African look than actually so-called African-American.” “I will bet she’s first generation American “. “I am guessing she is Nigerian decent. Probably Igbo, maybe Yoruba.”
    Then about five minutes in, you prove it to me where suddenly a West African accent appears and you said some thing in what sounds like a West African language.
    I’m just testing my instincts. I hope you will respond and let me know if I’m right or wrong.

    Lemme just say this, on the topic of Netflix, one of my good friends created a show, it's called Grand Army. Yes, it's shows trauma but it also has many good moments and ends well. But I'm biased because I read the script, was on set, n it features stories that were about me and my friends so like...I low-key feel connected. BUT Netflix? The woman who wrote it, white woman, she had to FIGHT for months. They wanted baby daddy drama for the dark skinned male lead. They wanted more trauma for the black characters. They wanted Joey to forgive her friends and get back with Tim or whoever one didn't help her in the cab. They wanted a bunch of racist sexist classist shit. But then when it comes out, "Netflix Original." Nope. They were gonna change the whole script into a degrassi type show frfr. That was their target. Ain't nobody got time for that. The reason why they actually act like kids is cus it was written based off actual kids and teens from her class.
    These people are doing exactly what they always been planning. It's all on purpose.
    EDIT EDIT! I wrote this BEFORE you spoke about Grand Army. Lemme add some shittt cusss.
    TAMEKA IS ME! lmfao and every other black girl in Katie's class.(it was me, the girl who plays Dom and the girl who plays Tameka.) lol We were the only ones. The show is white af because her students were mostly white. These stories also come from her play SLUT, Joey's part. It's also a book. So proud of my good sis for writing this. And yo, You've inspired me to make a video about it since I dead got inside shit. But yeah. I'm glad you said something because Grand Army is really DIFFERENT. And another thing, Katie Cappiello, despite allegations of racism, she made sure the hair stylists, makeup artists, etc were black. She asked us for help because she knew a white woman wouldn't really know how to create characters like those. Especially, Dominque's character. I'm hella biased. The actress is my baby GIRL. :') Basically the whole cast are my loves. the set was so fucking nice. I got a video on my channel of the pre wrap party. Shameless plug. lol Still binge watching!

    Sorry for all these multiple comments but I'm wondering what are the psychological effects on the actors/actresses. Imagine being the young girl from US/Them and how she knows she's acting but how much of that imagery and subject matter stays in her mind???

    • @_SHOLISCO_
      @_SHOLISCO_  3 роки тому +2

      No worries I love the dialogue honestly!! I can only imagine because there have been conversation had about the after-effects of the specific roles taken by these actors/actresses and how they have had to go to therapy in order to get back to themselves. "US" was well done more and the imagery was thought-provoking in my personal opinion however I can never see it in the same category as " THEM"because of how the scenes look so traumatizing.

    • @kladies3021
      @kladies3021 3 роки тому

      @@_SHOLISCO_ I can just imagine what they go through and needing counseling to get back to a healthy state of mind just sounds heart breaking. I'll admit I haven't seen Them but from the detailed descriptions and reviews from other youtubers, it's utterly disturbing. US isn't as intense but for the teenage girl that was featured in both productions, it worries me with how she's processing these depictions. It's even traumatizing for adults, so I can't imagine how she's feeling or how she separates real life from the movies. Thank you for bringing up this topic, it's so vitally important to consider the effects of the media we consume and how it effects everyone from the actors/actresses to everyday people.
