  • Thanks for checking out my review of the new Amazon Prime Video series 'Them' from creator Little Marvin. This series set in 1950s California examines the life of the Emory family, a Black family that moves into an all-white neighborhood. Once there, they experience terrors and torment from entities both next door and otherworldly. Should this horror series be on your watchlist? Thanks for checking out my review of Them!

    I love it. It did what real artistry is suppose to do, provoke emotions and discussion. If art doesn't do that, it wasn't worth it. This show made me angry, upset, and horrified. It kept me engaged to the TV. While the events of this film are fiction, these kinds of events really did happen and not only to blacks but to many other minorities in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I felt a lot of empathy for "Lucky" and the PTSD she carried with her. I just didn't expect such an exceptional show from Amazon Prime. This is usually HBO territory but Amazon truly stepped up to the plate with this show.

    I enjoyed your review, but I thought Bette's scene with her father and mother wasn't to make us feel sympathy for Bette, it was to show that the perfect, noble façade she was "protecting" was a lie. In her polemic at the neighborhood meeting, in the one of the earlier scenes, she talks about the neighborhood being a "blood right" and something her father fought to preserve for his family. When she visits him to ask for a loan he has nothing nice to say about Compton and speaks about it like a worthless hovel. The visual allusion to serial sexual abuse is to show that she has nothing to protect because her legacy is abusive and rotten. Her husband's back story also speaks to this. The policeman references him going into a bar that "looks like every other bar from the outside". I instantly thought that was a reference to a gay bar. He is also spending all of his savings and disappearing at night. I think this is to make us believe that like her family, her marriage is also a sham because her husband is living a double life as a closeted gay man who might be spending his savings on prostitutes. Basically, these subplots say "white people aren't protecting anything, because their lives are a mess ". It shows that there is no nobility to white supremacy, just rot. With Bette's kidnapping plot, I think you kind of missed the point here. She was soliciting the milk man to do violent harm to the Emory family, but he never had that intent and was always talking about taking her away from her horrible life. Their wires were crossed. I think this was done to show that when hate is pursued to the ultimate end you can't see things clearly, and it traps you in a dark and removed place that will ultimately destroy you. I think there was some symbolism here that might have been missed.

      I agree with your commentary. I feel that Betty was full of fear and hatred for people who had never done anything to her just because they were black, but was willing to put her trust in someone else that she didn’t know, just because he was white.

    • @SurrealSurrender
      @SurrealSurrender 3 роки тому +6

      You are correct. I think the ending is a reflection of how racism typically goes unpunished and how that leaves the door open for racism to perpetuate in our society. At the same time, even though the Emorys didn’t seem to get the retribution they so deserved, them standing strong together at the end represents how evil outside forces tends to bond the Black family closer together. Having Nina Simone’s ‘Young, gifted, and black’ playing at the end and the last shot was of Gracie’s stoic face infers to me that our Black people are strong and won’t stand for racist bs.

      @@SurrealSurrender or it can be seen as how black people continue to deal with racist bs with no accountability so all we got left is to try and lean on each other, the anger I feel watching these kind of things is why I don’t like watching these kind of things and even though people of other races watch, they still don’t truly get it or really learn anything from it so then it becomes what’s the point other than profiting of black trauma and pain by people who aren’t black so do black peoples perpetuate the violence against us by supporting/glorifying such things is the question

    • @SurrealSurrender
      @SurrealSurrender 3 роки тому +1

      @@lovelydiva06 I can get behind your perspective that Black-trauma-for-entertainment-value does nothing to move the needle forward in regards to combating racism. You are right. I doubt highly that the folks that should be watching this show and learning from it are. And having us watching the brutalization of our people does nothing but hurt our mental and emotional health. My hopes is at the very least this provides a better historical documentation, even though it is a fictional horror show, of this racist country’s past better than the whitewashed history that is presently being disseminated.

    There was no retaliation to the white “villains” in this movie, because that is not the black reality. We have to endure these injustices with a smile and still be crucified for actions that did not stem from us. To retaliate would be to paint the black people as the white people wanted to see them, as “beasts”. Black people in reality always had to turn the proverbial other cheek or face the consequences of standing up for themselves. Really I loved the ending. Because in reality they would be shot dead for even hitting a white man, even as rightfully deserved as it was. I don’t believe there will be a season two because I believe the husband will be shot and killed, the wife will be committed to a mental health institution elsewhere & the kids placed elsewhere to endure more mental hardship that they will have to cope with because black women are “strong”.

    This show was traumatic yet brilliantly executed. The way the show depicts how each member of the black family has to confront their own trauma:
    The father feeling emasculated and dehumanized “tap dancing” in a white man’s world to provide the best for his family on top of his PTSD.
    The mother battling very deep emotional trauma and loss while the world projects the angry black woman stereotype on her.
    The eldest daughter seeing her mother’s mental breakdown being perceived as crazy and being alienated from her classmates battles hating being in her own skin.
    The youngest daughter’s trauma wasn’t as clear to me but perhaps the spirit that haunted her was her coping with the loss of her mother as her teacher since losing her brother.
    I also view the teacher Ms. Vera as a broader depiction of the racist ideologies deep-rooted in our education system. Additionally, Mr. Epps (the preacher) seemed to be a representation of the perversion and abuse of the Bible and Christianity as a whole to reinforce their false narrative of God ordained racist ideologies. In the end I really enjoyed how each family member overcame their trauma and came together in the end. Very deep and important message; however I will never watch this show again though.

    It was painfully uncomfortable watching each episode, but was finally able to complete it. Just like you, the visual graphic scenes were both disturbing and disjointed. Especially, the gruesome violence aimed at the women & children. Also, the "phantom" characters like Miss Vera had no reference point as to how she fits within Epps leader of the fallen. Furthermore, the torture against Henry was uncalled for and there was never a true story arc for Clarke or for the rotten remaining in East Compton.

    I do appreciate an example of the emotional and mental toll racism has on people especially when there is no justice for them. An officer tells Betty, you have to make your neighbors feel safe and you can see in her face who will make her and her family feel safe. It was a perfect expression of how many people of color feel in the US. Always micromanaging their behavior to make the tormentors feel comfortable.

      Great that you went away having learned a few things (not speaking on the show's supernatural components).
      FOR INSTANCE 📚 (Episode 9):
      The Oregon black exclusion laws were attempts to prevent black people from settling within the borders of the settlement and eventual U.S. state of Oregon. The first such law took effect in 1844, when the Provisional Government of Oregon voted to exclude black settlers from Oregon's borders. The law authorized a punishment for any black settler remaining in the territory to be whipped with "not less than twenty nor more than thirty-nine stripes" for every six months they remained. Additional laws aimed at African Americans entering Oregon were ratified in 1849 and 1857. The last of these laws was repealed in 1926. The laws, born of anti-slavery and anti-black beliefs, were often justified as a reaction to fears of black people instigating Native American uprisings.
      Good that you learned some actual U.S. history simply by watching a horror series. 💡

      9 is an INDELIBLE story.
      Nona Parker Johnson (Episode 9, pregnant woman 'Martha') is every bit as gorgeous as Ayorinde. Nona has great facial features & structure. Everyone in Episode 9 executed their respective roles outstandingly. 📽 🎬 🎞
      As for the episode being "worse" (in terms of intensity, violent content), I wouldn't disagree with you. In Episode 5 you see an implied rape & infant murder sequence, while in 9 you saw three protagonists mutilated & murdered (Martha, Grafton, and the baby still in Martha's womb). Also, as wicked and evil as the heinous antagonists in Episode 5 are, Episode 9 is on another level because it shows how biblical passages were once contorted for use as racist dogma, and there are direct supernatural influences/manipulations giving flame to the episodes atrocities.
      Episode 9 is perhaps the most indelible full episode to me, and absolutely among the favored three episodes of the full ten.

I have not been this excited about a horror show since the first three seasons of American horror story back when it was original and unique. The direction & production values and or course the acting in THem is top notch and I cannot wait for a new story in seaosn two. This series is a masterclass in horror....
