    Hi Mike - i just made a batch of momigami papers - 10 i did with liquid starch and 10 i did with hair conditioner - they both came out soft and delicate - some videos show gluing pieces of newspaper to strengthen them - to i made "sandwiches" lol - i glued my momigami to the front and back of a page of newspaper - so now its a beautiful and more flexible momigami page - and i truly love the idea of making enough to create a Journal - oh yes lol - thank you xx

    Dear Mike,
    Just a note to say thank you for all the wonderful inspiration and informative videos. I also wanted to say that it is a comfort to see that the cabinet behind you full of crafting supplies looks very much like the one in my office. I feel seen and validated! ;-)

    May just have to do another page now and add craft card for the cover- I have just spent the last couple of days sticking all my scraps onto the paper- goodness knows what my neighbour thought seeing paper hung out on the line to dry! Thanks for keeping me busy Mike! LOL.

    It's looking great! So, I've started patching up my pages with scraps ... a tad concerned about the kneading bit as I have quite severe arthritis in my hands. Might take me much longer to achieve the fabric feel ... hahahah! Looking forward to 2023 to see how your journal gets filled and wondering what might happen in mine. Only 12 pages - 🙄😬- no discards, then! 😄 Thank you for yet another intriguing idea.

    Despite my good intentions last week, I didn't end up doing these pages! I will eventually, I love the idea. Hi Mike! So glad I watched your two Momigami videos. I have some collaged pages already done and am not motivated to use them for tags, etc. so this technique is perfect! I also saw another You Tuber use hair conditioner to soften Amazon packaging paper and she used that to make faux leather for journal covers. I'm off to try hair conditioner on my collage pages! Best to you and Ian and Mr. B. Cheers from Denver CO!

    Hi Mike, Good idea to use the foot lotion since it has a special softener for feet. They use lactic acid and urea in low percentage to soften feet so I imagine it would do the same for paper and it did, well done!! Thank you for a problem-solving video I enjoyed the process!

    I wonder if the lotion, over time, turn or cause yellowing like some things do with age?... maybe not since they are natural oils... tea tree oil, etc. I'm very anxious to see you start working in this Momigami journal next year. Thank you for sharing this procedure with us Mike.

    The nature of the paper fibres is key to a very successful result. Newsprint is the poorest quality of paper because of its short fibres and tearing is likely. I like to use glycerine and water in the kneeling process. Japanese mulberry paper is the best. So using better quality paper is advisable.

    This is time consuming but you don’t actually know until you have finished the double side of one how much time has passed. It’s great making yourself a journal like this, it is cost effective which at the moment is brilliant. Well done Mike making something that anyone can make. Could glue and water work just as well? I might try it as well. Thank you xx

    • @suzishapiro9867

      White glue and water would probably be similar to acrylic medium. Let it dry before manipulating the paper or you will have much of the paper stuck to your hands.

    • @anazec2887
      @anazec2887 11 місяців тому

      Better use cheap acrilic then water colours. You can use thicker paper in color lets say you use light blue paper and onda the other side just paint in dark blue. It's look amazing and if is paper thick you can make even cover for journal

    Wondering if a residue is left that may interfere/resist with future journaling "enhancements"? This looks to be a rather satisfying and therapeutic way to create "paper". I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

  • @suzishapiro9867
    @suzishapiro9867 Рік тому +1

    Oh my. You need to do a bit of research on the chemistry of the products. Acrylic paint and medium are plastic and when dry are water resistant and usually waterproof. The paint doesn’t wash off your house in the rain when painted with acrylic paint. Hand sanitizer has alcohol which can break down the acrylic a bit. The amount of oil in it is very minimal. Lotion and oils on paper make them poor art materials as they stain other papers.

    • @MikeDeakinArt
      @MikeDeakinArt  Рік тому +1

      …and yet it works beautifully!

    • @suzishapiro9867
      @suzishapiro9867 Рік тому +1

      @@MikeDeakinArt I’m sure it is nice and flexible and soft. I appreciate your willingness to experiment and try new options.
      My concern is the hours you and others will put into making this type of momagami to find that it doesn’t hold up well.
      Paper you apply to it may not stick or may have stains. Alcohol will just evaporate.
      Better options might be :
      Mineral oil will not attract animals or get moldy but if too heavily applied it may damage papers you use with it. Glycerin and water will hold the moisture in and may keep the papers flexible longer than just water. It may make the scrunching process easier buy may eventually dry out.
      I painted with acrylic on one side of paper and the wrinkles from kneading it kept it soft while the plastic in the acrylic binder made it stronger. No moisture needed.
      Hope to see you continue with you exploration.

    Too much work with no assurance that, over time (1) the glue will stick well to the surface, (2) the oil will not become rancid and start to smell bad, and (3) the pages will not stick together. It looked okay with where you left it, but that really isn’t the end of the project.

    • @MikeDeakinArt
      @MikeDeakinArt  Рік тому +4

      There are never any assurances in life, all I can say is, it’s now been months and the oil hasn’t gone rancid, the pages haven’t fallen apart and I still have faith. ❤️
