Karl absolutely man! John Prines version was still a nice cover, but I didn’t like how he changed the words in the first verse from ‘trying to hide my sorrow from the people I meet’ to ‘playin songs for the people I meet’.... It felt like he was trying to make the song more positive and sweeter when Foleys version really hit deep to all who hears it because it’s seriously one of the greatest songs of all time! Mind you I’m a 35 year old metal head and musician who can appreciate good music when I hear it, and for some years I thought Prine wrote the song until I learnt it was Blaze Foley, so I started looking into him and was just taken back and loved him ever since
ua-cam.com/video/HIWvgh981LY/v-deo.html Check out this version if you’re a fan, two brothers and one sister with so much talent, it’s truly a beautiful version
Patrick Swayze that’s common in this type of music for lyrics to change. It’s the artist putting their personality into the song. I’m sure John and blaze had different ways to play the song as well
I have watched this video so many times, I think this may be the first song I can officially play and sing at the same time. Your channel is great, thank you.
Thanks so much for this David. I love your teaching style - so calm and methodical and your tabs and comments are spot on. A beautiful song, a lovely gentle tune - taught by you in a masterful and thoroughly instructive way. Thanks again, Peter
Your tip about focusing on the notes played with the right thumb was exactly what I needed. Something so simple, yet has been completely overlooked in other finger picking guitar tutorials. First time I've gotten excited about playing something new in a long time, thanks a lot. And for anybody else reading this, using your foot as a metronome to help keep time has been a big help as well, especially with sneaking those melody notes in!
I just wanted to say that your tab sheet is the BEST I've ever seen. Its so beginner friendly and has everything anyone can wish for in tabs. Thank you and I'll be sure to continue supporting you!
Watching so I can convert to the banjo, ain’t many claw hammer lessons for this song out there that sound right for my style! What a wonderful teacher, The way you taught this beautiful song was very clear and easy to understand, the guitar community is very lucky to have you! Have a great day!
I LOVE John Prine. Thus am desperate to learn Travis picking. It’s so much more difficult than I thought it’d be. This is the first time I’ve had hope. Love this lesson.
Great lesson. John Prine was mainly known to base pattern pick 6/4 and use his index finger as you showed on the last part of the lesson. This is the best lesson I have seen to date, on, or for John Prine guitar, Though this is a Blaze Foley song, lol
Can I just say thank you thank you thank you? Have been trying this Travis picking business for some time. It’s stinkin hard. This lesson flipped some switch for me. It took a week but I got this song down. Love it. Can’t wait to learn the next.
Been messing with Finger Style and finally making breakthroughs working up this song…Downloaded a bunch of your lessons and songs off Music Notes…great detail. In John Prine videos it looks like he’s using his thumb the fret F# (A if capo on 3rd)..I find it easier, especially is using your simple G with ring finger … thanks for the great lessons
I don't think John Prine ever got the respect he deserved even in death.. Not taking anything away from Bill Withers or Kenny Rogers, but when they passed it was reported immediately in the media.. Both of them musical icons.. I just now saw something on John Prine's passing on CNN today.. He was appreciated by many fan's, and Hall of Famer's in the industry.. What a great song-writer.. Thanks for doing this video.. Loved it...
Thanks for this! I've been trying to figure out the finger picking by ear on banjo and this video helped a lot just with slowing down and playing alongside it. I now have my own transcription for banjo that I've composed thanks to this =).
I definitely am more of a strummer than a finger picker, but I’ve enjoyed challenging myself with this lesson. I appreciate that you were honest about how long it took for you to get it down. Knowing that your playing abilities are much greater than mine, I am a little more patient with myself. The ‘D’ chord utilizing my little finger on fret 3 has been the trickiest. I’ve tried using a hammer-on with a pull off and quite like it. Once again thanks for the lesson. 👍👍
For anyone struggling with the Travis picking, I learned how to do it by focusing on the bass by just doing it over and over again and trying to slowly implement each of the other notes. If I messed up, I’d play the bass notes 10 times and then try again. Once I got the g chord progression down I just did that on loop over and over again until I was able to do it comfortably without watching my picking hand. Then I did the same thing for the c chord and it was WAY easier than the first time. Just getting used to keeping the bass notes on pace is the most important part, so emphasize that and you’ll have it down in no time. Just takes a little muscle memory
Timely and awesome David. He died on his 24th wedding anniversary. A true legend ! Would love to see a month long tribute to his music and playing style if you are up to it. I know you would do him proud.
Prines cover was beautiful, but it was written and performed by Blaze Foley many years before Prine started play it. If you know this then I apologise, I’m not trying to patronise you, just share good music with people who will appreciate it
This is great David. Very good lesson. I have a student that is learning this song. I wonder if she has seen your video? I'll let her know. Cheers, Hal
Fantastic lessons love Blaze and John prine new to learning the guitar only 12 months but you make it so easy to learn please keep going. How do I become a patriot.
David, I loved this lesson and I'm wondering if you could put together John Prine's Crazy As a Loon...except do the Kurt Vile tribute to John Prine version. It's beautiful!! Thank you
Great lesson David. Just discovered his work thanks to you. Really enjoying playing this song. Do you think you could possibly follow this up with a lesson on his last song "I Remember Everything".
Thanks, David! Great lesson and very nice tribute to John Prine. I have a question on the Intro tab, Part 2 of 2, Measure #3, second half. Is the last note on the 3rd (G) string supposed to be open (G), or 2nd fret (A). In the video, you look to be on the second fret (A). Plus, it's still part of the D cord section. Just trying to make sure I get it right. Thanks again.
Hey bud You’re better off using a capo if you can or have one, it just doesn’t capture the emotion as well in standard tuning where as using the capo makes it sound so much more raw and meaningful
Ps- it was actually written by Blaze Foley if you weren’t aware of that? If not then be sure to check out the version that has a side on profile of his face on the cover for UA-cam or Spotify or something
stv. The PDF shows it as an open G string but the video has it played with the G string played fretted at the 2nd fret. I guess you can play either way but I prefer the sound when tgecG string is fretted at fret 2. It also found it easier not having to rember to lift my finger of fret 2. I hope that helps.
Practiced the hell out of measure 1 & 2. I got it memorized. My only problem is the timing. It doesn't sound like you. There are slight pauses that i can't quite get to roll. Any advice?
Much complaining about a purported misattribution of "Clay Pigeons" to John Prine. Mr. Pots clearly identifies Blaze as the author of the song and writes, "as covered by" John Prine. So everyone can relax.
why don't you explain the hammer on part more? your other video where you claim to explain it you barely do. Your last video was super helpful with the counting until 13:53 and you just stop counting with the hammer on and don't explain it
Nobody said Prine wrote it but thanks for all of your exclamation marks. I think everyone who knows either Prine's or Foley's music knows who wrote it. Give us all a break and just enjoy the work David put into this lesson.

I'm going to stop requesting songs because I enjoy what you come up with so much more... RIP John
Great lesson. I downloaded the PDF and it is done so well one could learn the entire song easily from just that. Well done.
You are a wonderful teacher. Thanx!
Brilliant lesson. Took a while but got there in the end. Many thanks to a great tutor.😊

I do dig what you're doin'..........an in depth lesson on YOU TUBE.......Finally!
How could ANYONE thumbs down .. what is wrong with people. Be peaceful John Prine.. such a loss to humanity

omg i’m so glad that i found ur channel 😭! (already subscribed)
Thank you for this David! Please post more John Prine! Would love to see you teach some songs from Tree of Forgiveness album.
The song was actually written and performed by a musician named Blaze Foley, John Prine made it more famous some years after Foleys death
Something that is of interest, is why the treble notes are being played, in chord patterns, for those of us that don't know this theory.
Thanks, man.
Thank you, sir.
Hi really good of you to make the PDF available as a tribute to JP....many thanks, will no doubt tip ya jar and become a patreon.
Good work!

Do you think you could possibly follow this up with a lesson on his last song "I Remember Everything".
Fantastic stuff! Hey, can you di a tutorial of this song for the ukelele as well?
"Try to hide my sorrow from the people I meet" Those are the lyrics Blaze Foley wrote, he wrote.
