    Thanks for the letting us in on your thought process. After more than a year without dedicated camera, I got myself a ZV-1. It doesn't have minimum shutter speed, but it does have a button for background defocus with two settings: defocus (wide open) or clear (f/5.6). So for street, I keep it in Tv, and use this button to quickly change aperture. While the sensor in the camera is much smaller than in the GRⅢ, due to the insanely fast tracking AF, it's possible to basically always shoot wide open at night, getting in a decent amount of light.

      I don't find the tracking on the Ricoh to be that reliable but I have to admit I only tried it a few times. It might work well. • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, this is tricky, I think I have the perfectly sized hands and wrists to do this. But basically, I put my hand through the loop, then stretch it out so that both ends of the loop are between my thumb and index finger. Then I wrap it forward around my thumb one time. This makes it taught and secure with no slack. I guess I should make a short about this....

    Very helpful, Janusz! I found the little philosophical part in the ISO chapter interesting as well. 😀The only gripe I have with my GR III(x) button configuration: I have configured the Fn-button of all my GRs (I , III and IIIx) with AF+AE Lock. I use that for pano shooting. My problem is that on the GR III(x) it doesn't seem possible any more to keep it locked with a simple press of the (Fn-) button. Instead I have to *keep* it pressed. Even though there is a dedicated menu item ("Keep AE lock"), it does in fact nothing to change that behavior.

      The teleconvertor? You mean, the lens attachment on the front of the camera to make it like 50mm? I might try it but to me it defeats the purpose of this camera. This video is great as always! I do have a question about the auto iso setting. I have set the min and max iso limits like you but left the minimum shutter to 1/400 because i take a lot of photos of moving subjects. I do not notice that the iso changes like it does for you when the shutter speed changes. It just says iso auto 6400. This video was awesome! For my first camera I was planning on buying a Sony a6400, but since I'm going to be going to college soon (that's located in a city), I'm seriously considering the Ricoh Gr III. Is there any advice you would give for picking between the GR III AND GR IIIx? To my understanding, the gr IIIx has a longer focal length and will require me to go back further to take a picture (compared to the gr III). I plan on being on the streets a lot and travel fairly frequently (where I take pictures of things like food, steets, landscape). I don't see myself using a tripod much since I'm more drawn to point and shoot, but I think this camera will be one I use daily. 😁
    Overall, this was an excellent video, and I especially loved the bicycle picture you took!

      @EYExplore  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much! I would say the GR3 is more versatile than the GR3x overall. But if it's your first camera it's a bit difficult to get used to since you have to get pretty close to subjects in some cases (since it's rather wide). However, I guess these days phones have pretty wide lenses, so it might be something you are used to anyway. I generally like to get close so this suits me very well. :)

    I really want to upgrade my X70 to a GR III for the IQ, since all my best photos are taken on a pocket 28 equivalent. However, I'm wondering if it's better to wait for the GRIV. I don't know if I should jump in this far along in the product life cycle, or just buy the new one on release.

      @EYExplore  Рік тому +1

      I dunno, but you might be waiting a looooong time. I think the GR2 and GR3 we're like 8 years apart or so. I would just get one. You can always sell it and upgrade when a GR4 comes out. :)

    • @-grey
      @-grey Рік тому +1

      @@EYExplore That is true. Ricoh seems to stick with what ain't broke. I usually can't sell my cameras though. I swear I baby them, but they just always break somehow. I'm yet to find one that could truly endure being a literal everyday carry for more than a couple years. My X-T2 is bugging out, and the mech shutter is stuck. My A7II couldn't recieve power off the battery, and the PDAF seemed to burn into the sensor, showing up in all my images. Even my old Canon 7D died, so it's not just a mirrorless thing. My X-E2S stopped having functioning buttons, but that one was my fault - I spilled orange juice on it. 😂
      The sad part is that my X70 got some dust past the protective filter, and since it's not great at f2.8 beyond 1 or 2m I am stuck between f4 and f6.3. Creative constraints.

    in order to keep the battery icon my screen is kinda messy, maybe i should try it without
    I find it interesting that many people use very different settings and layouts but everyone has the goal of simplicity and speed.
    I feel like my setup is as good as it gets for my style. I wish Ricoh would allow even more customization to make it even better. For example I always use manual with Auto ISO, this however forces me to be careful when it gets too bright because if i reach the lower ISO it overexposes, therefore I usually keep my SS and AP on values so the ISO is around the 400-1600 range. I dont want to use AV to be quicker when adjusting the SS. So ideally I have a manual mode with automatic SS increase which only engages when base ISO is reached.
    But obviously thats a very niche thing and I'm very comfortable as it is now.
    I also find the Wifi-Button very useful. You use it to enable a rather useless manual focus (as you said) for me it switches between Snap-Mode and regular Auto-Focus because my FN Button is already my Back Button Focus. So yeah probably no setting is the same but that shows just how customizable the camera and how different the users are.

      I think you'd find that the min-shutter speed settings in the ISO options + Av mode might suit your needs. But I know it's not quite the same as what you'd like. It would be kinda confusing to use though, because the shutter speed is manual but it would have a floating minimum so you'd sometimes note be able to set it any lower. What about just using Tv? Then when your shutter speed is too slow the aperture will just get smaller, no?

    • @TheChosenOne_
      @TheChosenOne_ Рік тому

      @@EYExplore TV might be an option however i always use f8 because at 2m it basically gives me hyperfocal and i tend to rather go down with SS than aperture. If there would be a quick option to lower minimum SS in Av then yes that would be good but i dont think this can be mapped to a dial
      But yeah it’s only minor because the only downside with my setup is that i don’t always get the cleanest image but usually it’s not that sunny anyway where 1/500 and f8 wants to go below 200 ISO

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Рік тому

      I find them to be basically indistinguishable in terms of image quality. The sensors are the same, so it only leaves the lens. I find the sharpness to be very high on either camera. But I didn't bother doing a controlled, side-by-side comparison. To me, they are both well beyond good enough. :)

    Thank you, useful!
    However two things I don’t understand:
    1. When setting my min shutter speed in iso menu (1/250), the camera simply doesn’t take that in consideration and still offer me lower shutter speed , I don’t know why?
    2. It’s strange that you have exposure compensation available (on the wheel) in M mode.. M is manual so all the exposition is made manually and therefore, EV is generally not available, isn’t it? Or do I say a big error lol?

    • @gregorylacomble7091
      @gregorylacomble7091 Рік тому

      Oops it’s ok for the iso I just forgot to set it up to auto in the same menu 🫣

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Рік тому +1

      So, when you are on Auto ISO with a min shutter and max ISO, the shutter will stay at your min UNTIL the ISO gets to its max, then the shutter will go below the min. It all depends on the current ISO. If ISO is too low for the metered exposure, the camera has no choice but to go below the shutter speed, so it's a 'soft' minimum.
      As for Exposure Compensation on M mode. It's not true for all cameras, but for many cameras, including this one, M mode means manual shutter and aperture, but ISO is a separate setting, so you can have M + Auto ISO, which means the exposure compensation indirectly controls the ISO in this case (as a value relative to what the camera meters).
      Hope that helps! :)

      I notice a last thing that leads me to another question lol sorry, so you change your iso button to set it up for the snap focus distance. But it seems you can easily change the distance (when focus is set to snap mode) by maintaining the macro button and rotating the front wheel. I find that option very useful so i was wondering why, in your case, you set it to the iso button despite the fact that you can change the snap distance just with this method? (Macro + wheel). Thanks, i think that’s my last question lol

      @@gregorylacomble7091 You're totally right that this is possible, but I find it less fast when I am in a hurry. Maybe I could get used to it but I like the other way. When you're I'm in a hurry I find it easy to accidentally get into macro mode and then that's super annoying. But in the end it's a matter of persona preference. I'm glad that option is there. I think it's clever of Ricoh to add that simple little functionality. :)

      Actually, I just re-watched the video... I'm not sure what you're getting at. I stumbled like twice during the explanation of exposure. Other than that I feel I explained everything smoothly, and yeah quickly. But I talk fast because I like to listen to fast things too. I find most content on youtube I watch on 1.5x minimum, and usually 2x. Also, everything I said in the video I would say again, nothing was unnecessary in my opinion, so less would definitely be less in this case. I did also put a note in the middle that said something like "yeah that was a lot of info so I recommend watching again on .75x."
      Anyway, I make the kind of videos I'd like to watch. So, as I said, I like how I talk haha. :)
