really awesome talk! even as someone who has been in the industry for the last 12 years I found some nuggets of gold in there! Naughty Dog is constantly inspiring with their insane level of quality. thanks for sharing!
Zach Bush I'm starting to think these guys defeat the purpose of animation college....lol just so much good courses online. I just want to take all their courses!
Was just working on a "re design" of some EQ2 environments while listening to this. Was grabbing some reference photos when I heard him say he worked on the game, and almost choked on my coffee lol
Hey sorry for the late response but I think I've seen this on ArtStation. I believe this scene was a recreation of another scene in Uncharted 4 but entirely remade in Unreal Engine 4. Hope that helps!
50:02 learn all basics to environment modeling = maya) all environment pieces modeling and unwrapping all in Maya Uses mud box for brick = organic detailing that easier to do in a organic sculpting program = zbrush is fine as well instead of mudbox The rest of the architecture = columns, windows, etc don’t need the extra mudbox step cus they dint need that organic breakdown like the brick
Can a Level Designer do Env Art and vice versa if they have the necessary skills? It seems strange to me that they are two different disciplines. I think every LD should be an EA and every EA should be a LD.
For a small studio like an indie studio yes one could do both rolls mainly because of cost and the project isn't as big as a AAA game. But in this case the studio is large and they can afford to have two different positions in order to increase productivity and 2 minds are always better than one. So the EA may suggest ideas to the LD and vice versa. This also decreases the amount of stress an individual would have if he had to do both. They also have position specifically for just modelers and another position for just texturing because texturing is another monster that needs focus all on it's own especially if you're creating those textures from scratch like in substance designer
You should try 3d coat since it is beating anything out there when it come to environment and specially damaging. Nothing come even close and i was using 3ds max for 17 years before i switch to blender+3d coat!
