watching this on 2023, it's been 4 years since this was posted and was strongly helpful and not exactly "out of date", art is really atemporal knowledge
This was exactly what I've been looking for. I've got books and books on perspective but there just seemed to be a block. Then I saw this video, tried the exercises, and was really happy with the depth I saw in what I was making, even though they were just triangles with some value added. I knew it was working when, while watching TV one night, I saw a shot of a hallway...halls and sconces and doors and stuff, right? But for a second, I SAW THE MATRIX and flashed on the really simple shapes that were creating that depth. Thanks for setting me on the right path! I'm going to tell folks about you on my blog.
Oh, and for anyone else struggling with environments, "How to Draw Backgrounds with Character" by BetsyIllustration on DA (the book's also available on GumRoad) is equally eye-opening, but in a different way.
This is so helpful! I’ve put all my eggs into the character art basket for a few years now and this is a great help to finally start getting into environment design!!!
In programming there is a thing called “KISS” which means ... keep it simple stupid , very applicable of what you said, thanx for the tutorial very appreciated.
Thank you! I appreciate your videos, im just starting out and really want to get into enviroment design and this helps A LOT clearing out a lot of doubts about what i should be aiming at. Again thank you!!!
Thanks Tyler, I always had a problem with "what to draw".. and I just give up faster this way and feel like "meh". But now thanks to you, I didnt think of thinking basic shapes would be such a good tool! But a question: I couldnt decide which to start off with, character or environment drawing, I thought If I do character first, anything else gets easier to learn, but I think its not true. So.. do I have to know how to draw characters if I want to get hired as an environment artist?
@@TylerEdlin84 Great, thanks a ton really. Overcoming that hurdle is like a major step, now pencil up, and hello basic shapes -> a landscape. Thank you :)
@@TylerEdlin84 Things are going well, thanks for asking Tyler. I am pretty busy with work, but I try to find some time for drawing. While I am not improving as fast as I would wish, I am definitely doing small "level ups" here and there: just one step at a time! :)
Omg when I saw your webcam feed the first thing that cames to mind was: "Kane lives!" Thats from Command And Conquer btw. Now I will continue the rest of the video.
Thank you for creating this super helpful video. I have so many ideas in my head and I always want to go balls to the wall from the getgo but then I end of overwhelming myself and starting over or starting a new project.
My god, i was apporaching this all wrong xDD i was going simple but not THIS simple and i was getting frustrated; its hard to start over once you learn so much, i practiced and polished do many skills but i never touched Environments- not even simple ones.
As a student, we feel like we're slowly running out of time before we need to have a portfolio.... any recommendations on how many of these you should do before you can work on the real finishing of a piece?
Kyle Lehfeldt always work on finishing a piece. Just make sure if it doesn’t turn out well you go back to something more simple. It’s like any childhood sports, your practice during the week have a game on the weekend. Do some of these then toss In a legit environment, rinse and repeat. Cant put an exact number on these things.
Public Opinion there aren’t any as far as I know. It’s more or less just about design fundamentals. Simple shapes are always more pleasing than complex ones.
@@TylerEdlin84Well atleast we have your channels it awesome! Chris Solarski Drawing Basics and Video Game Art has a few chapters on it and Doug Chiang Mechanika briefly mentions it, I'll just look into what you said design foundations always have to learn those foundation first and then kick butt.
Thank you for the reminder, I often forget to go simple. Using these tips I just sketched the best castle I've ever drawn from imagination!
That’s nice man

Finally i found an idea for adding the environment on an already drawn character by converting to basic shapes and proportions. Great tips
this video is just useful for illustrators of any level honestly.

not at all, in most cases they are very separate jobs

A question about your gumroad tutorials:
There exists a' fundamentals of design part 1' available somewhere to buy together with parts 2 and 3?
DRD Henri ha no there not a part 1 yet, it wouldn’t be necessary either they all are self contained
@@TylerEdlin84 Thank you! I made the same question in your facebook page, please, ignore that one.
cylinder design is environmental friendly.
