Are these headers CARB approved? It doesn't say so on the DT link that it is but it looks like there may be an EO number stamped on the headers. I have a 2004 Tundra with the 5VZ-FE and manual transmission. I was lucky. I caught an EOL sale at John Elway (Denver Broncos) Manhatten Beach Toyota where I picked up a set of genuine TRD headers. My truck was a daily driver back then so I didn't have time to tackle this Herculean project. I paid an exhaust shop and after watching this video, it was well worth the money for them to do the install for me. I have a K&N intake and a Banks monster exhaust connected to the headers. My truck runs great.
Yes, they are CARB compliant (EO D 540 6) - DUDE, you got lucky finding those OEM TRD Headers... how long ago did you buy them from the dealer, how much did you buy them for AND how much did the shop charge you? - Sean
@@TimmyTheToolman I hope that you are sitting down. John Elway's parts dept had them on EBAY for $400 which had a list price of $1195. The shop charged me $400 for a high-quality install job. The headers and installation was a no-brainer $800 investment. The 5VZ-FE is a bullet-proof engine. I have had them on my truck for about seven years.
Be honest, was it worth it? I bet it was with a supercharger. Without? I doubt it. How restrictive are the factory 5VZFE? I used to use Thorley on my Pontiacs and they were THE BEST. However, headers in general are a giant PITA...dead starters, leaks all the time, bolts backing out (this has improved), collector blowouts, massive heat generation and wearing of neighboring parts, burning of nearby wires, rust (ceramic is good but $$$), and on and on. Would be good to get a 6 month or 1 year update and your opinion on whether a benefit for a NA truck or not. Thanks for the vid!
@@gregrobertson9957 all valid points but challenge accepted! I will definitely give updates at those milestones. I would say it is worth it if you want to chase power and performance. Some people aren’t looking for those mods. Because I’m supercharged, I found it to be a valuable MOD. - Sean
I have a 2004 4.7 runner, 300,000 miles. The factory headers keep popping! I've been wanting Doug Thorley Headers for a long time, but I can't save that much money in my country.😶
Awesome vid and awesome mod! Would love to hear some revs with the camera at the tail pipe! Glad to see all the details on this install since it can get a little tricky with the dipstick relocation and the studs. How many hours did it take you to complete the install (minus the camera work)? Also, how do you keep your engine bay so clean?
Hey Sean/Tim, thank you for your detailed breakdown on installation and parts for installing the Doug Thorley Headers on the 2002 T4R. Re - your battery bracketry replacement hardware? I am looking to do similar, trying to hold off on relocating rad overflow tank, but the marine battery is keeping my attention for added amperage. At some time could you give a breakdown of your aftermarket re-bracketing of your engine compartment? And if you/Tim had the option, would you go with Doug Thorley shorties (still measured & guaranteed scavenging, whereas oem 0) Or TRD if you could find them? My limited experience R/racing sport bikes, shorties = more top end. Long tubes = more mids. & bear in mind I would be mating all of this to Magnaflow CAT/CAT back EXH with resonator for off-road clearance (someone already cut out my OE CAT for crack $ probably 🗡️😡). ‘98 SR5 4WD M/T Dark Pearl Migdnight Blue (I think)🤔
All good questions! 1st - I think it would be worth while to detail my 2 Group 31 battery installs on both of my rigs to explain what I did for both vehicles but in short, that bracket is a CBI Group 31 battery tray. 2nd - Because the TRD Headers are virtually extinct, and because the Doug Thorley options offer a ceramic coating for extra protection and heat retention, my vote would be for the Doug Thorley's showcased in this video. Both options I would assume would offer similar performance results. - Sean
Love the idea and the concept of the headers but what I’m worries about is look how close they are to the upper control arm bushings , the heat may cook the bushings after awhile same as the transmission dipstick .
That’s a valid concern, but these headers should actually retain the heat internally better than the OEM manifolds so in theory it should keep the engine bay cooler. But, come back to this video and and I can update you with how my bushings on my upper control arms are holding up. #moremodsmoreproblems am I right?? - Sean

I have a 2002 4Runner Sport Edition in Thundercloud Metalic. The previous owner used to keep it garaged and only used it for fair weather car shows. It's the nicest 3rd Gen I've ever seen, not a speck of rust, and 170K. It's tastefully lifted 2.5 inches, has a roof basket, and sits on 33" mud terrain Geolandars. I was considering adding a supercharger, headers, and 4:88 gears... Maybe even lockers. I'd probably start with the headers first. Would be cool to win some, but I'd rather pay double for them rather than have anything to do with Facebook or Instagram. I can barely stand UA-cam with all the censorship they have placed on gun channels. They have all become publishers, not platforms. Anyway, it's a good video and I love these Toyotas. I also have a 1987 SR5 pickup I bought new... It's only got 180K, but it's had a rough life. Put collector plates on it, and drive it around the block every week.

Re - your battery bracketry replacement hardware?
I am looking to do similar, trying to hold off on relocating rad overflow tank, but the marine battery is keeping my attention for added amperage.
At some time could you give a breakdown of your aftermarket re-bracketing of your engine compartment?
And if you/Tim had the option, would you go with Doug Thorley shorties (still measured & guaranteed scavenging, whereas oem 0)
Or TRD if you could find them?
My limited experience R/racing sport bikes, shorties = more top end.
Long tubes = more mids.
& bear in mind I would be mating all of this to Magnaflow CAT/CAT back EXH with resonator for off-road clearance (someone already cut out my OE CAT for crack $ probably 🗡️😡).

2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Sport Edition
Wishing everybody luck!
WOW! you found a GEM! Good luck with the giveaway!
2003 Toyota Tacoma Xtra Cab Prerunner!! This would be so epic for my new build, i got all new stuff except for new exhaust headers!!! Pleaseeeeee lol

1997 Toyota 4runner ~trd s/c w/7th injector and elocker 😏. Need to get some more flow/power out of this thing lol
Any difference in the numbers?!
yes... the THY-507-C part number is what was used in this video and I'm thinking is what will be used in the majority of applications with this engine. The other part number is: THY-507-S-C which is meant for vehicles with the external EGR tube.

@@TimmyTheToolman sorry meant like horsepower/data?
@@israelrodriguez6986 That't the idea - there is some good info on Doug Thorley's Instagram page but you can expect more low/mid range torque curve and power in addition to what I mention in the video as far as the benefits are concerned.
