I absolutely loved the new Thy Catafalque and Mitochondrion albums. Poppy’s new album was great too, I thought it was better than her previous two albums. New Havok EP, Mammoth Grinder EP, Make Them Suffer, and Worm Shepherd were decent releases.
Duuuuuuuuude!! I'm genuinely shocked you've never listened to much Thy Catafalque. They seem so much like your kinda black metal. Not a single bad album. I'd love to see you rate all of their albums, honestly.
Melty, have you heard of the Canadian Psychedelic black metal band 'The Gates'? Their latest album is like if The Cure wanted to dabble in BM. They have the weirdness of Esoctrilihum. You have to listen to this thing. Such a hidden gem.
Snubbed Paysage D twice lol…. At least a Bedsore mention! Yay! Also highly recommending the new Aara album Eiger. Late entry to the race but it will top my black metal list this year. The perfect soundtrack for freezing to death on a lonely mountainside.
Ehh, not a huge fan of Paysage D'Hiver honestly. And yeah Aara is one of the few upcoming albums I'm actually paying attention to at this point. December dry as fuck lmao.
While it isn't a "new" album, i would recommend checking out first fragment's new instrumental release of their 2 latest albums. I absolutely love it, the virtuosity really shines extremely bright without the vocals. I like their vocalist, but i've always hoped to hear these albums as instrumentals and it turned out just as amazing as i imagined.
Big Make Them Suffer fan- their new album definitely disappointed me. Their earlier albums, particularly Neverbloom and Old Souls, had such a cool narrative style that set itself apart from most other deathcore/metalcore (I still stand by Neverbloom being one of the heaviest deathcore albums ever despite them transitioning to metalcore after). They actually felt intimate and poetic rather than epic and cinematic like a lot of bands go for when they focus so much on concepts. It makes me so happy to see them get as big as they are, but most of their tracks since 2020 have not done it for me. There are some definite exceptions (not as many on this album admittedly), but overall I unfortunately miss their older stuff.
You covered several records that I loved here (Thy Catafalque, Poppy, Veilburner, and Mitochondrion), and it seems like I'd be into quite a few of the others based on your descriptions. It's been such a great year for metal. I don't even mind if December is slow, at least I can catch up. I'd like to shoutout Devenial Verdict, some awesome dissonant death metal with some doom and black metal influence that makes it borderline catchy at times. Kind of equal parts late 90s Morbid Angel and something more weird and atmospheric like Blut Aus Nord. Also, Feral Forms released a pretty nasty black/death metal record. I don't have nearly as much to say about it, but there's some great riffs and atmosphere over its concise 29-minute runtime

Ngl I was absolutely disappointed with the new worm shepherd record. Their previous ep showcased a more progressive and more melodic side to them while also being brutal. The songs were a lot more slower paced and gave time for the songs to naturally progress into each section and groove while still keeping that blackened feel. This new album though feels so all over the place in the worst way possible. The songs transitions and songwriting feel so cookie cutter and samey that you could sum up most of the tracks with “drawn out orchestral intro”to “short blast beat section” to “random chorusec moment” to “overblown breakdown” and then rinse and repeat and it doesn’t help that the transitions are so out of nowhere it’s like most of the songs will build up to nothing and then have a calm moment then into a random loud moment. And it’s like that for like 70% of the songs. I feel they did a much better job on their previous records with their songwriting. Plus I wish we got more clean singing during the actual metal moments and not just in the intro or outros. And I wish they focused more on their more progressive sound they did with their previous ep the sleeping sun. The title track and “and at the end of fear, silentium” were def my favs
Really dug Poppy's latest and I'm happy with how she's continuing to stay a strong force in heavy music.
You should really do a deep dive on Thy Catafalque
agreed

Glad to see a metal UA-camr talking about Ershetu. Another awesome album by them. I will say I preferred last years debut album to this by a smidge.

for some reason they were just never on my radar lmao, that's definitely gonna change

@@themetalmeltdownofficialFair enough. Looking forward to the top2024 lists at this point!
You missed Hippotraktor earlier this year, their album Stasis is My AOTY.

thats kinda cool, I might check that out.

I second this. This band should be way more known.

The Neon Nightmare album feels like a loving tribute to Type O to me, Nate has done a great job with it.
November was stacked AF Dude👍

@themetalmeltdownofficial is the reason why because of everything that happened with him if so I get it
Make Them Suffer's 2020 album was way fucking better than whatever the hell that was this year
What about the new As I Lay Dying? Say what you will about Tim, but the new record i thought was pretty good.
I didn't listen to it and I don't want to.
Dang, was hoping to see the Kruelty EP. But what can you do?
What? People don't like Obituary? That's like kicking a baby. Quite possibly a rotting, dead-eyed zombie baby, but a baby nonethess.
coincidentally that would make a great idea for an Obituary song
Yeah, the Eye of the Beholder cover is faithful to the original...except there's BASS!!! 😂
Marilyn Manson - OAUG. He’s one of the 🐐s, great record.
Yeah it is really good, I like that Reba Myers is now one of the guitarists

I'd rather not
To be Frank, his music is more rock then metal, Marilyn Manson has never said his music is metal
