Yamas and Niyamas: The '1st and 2nd Angas' by Sri M
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2020
- Sri M now goes back to the first two important angas in Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga - Yamas and Niyamas.
Sri M says, "For the practice of yoga, Yamas and Niyamas are very important. Sadhana pada is the second section of the Yogasutras of Patajali, after the samadhi pada, but before looking into the samadhi aspect you need to keep your chitta (mind) free of vrittis (disturbances). For that you need to practise the Yamas and Niyamas. So this is sadhana pada, what you have to practise to get there, (samadhi)....."
The Yamas are :
Ahimsa (non-violence)
Satya (truthfulness)
Asteya (non-stealing)
Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)
Brahmacharya (restraint in sexual conduct)
The Niyamas are :
Saucha (purity)
Tapas (purification through discipline)
Santosha (contentment)
Svadhyaya (self-study)
Ishvara Pranidhana (contemplation on Ishvara)
This online session took place on 18th June, 2020 in Madanapalle.

About Sri M
Born in India, Sri M is a spiritual guide, social reformer, educator and writer. He first met his Master at the age of nine under the jackfruit tree, in the compound of his house in Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian coastal state of Kerala.
The full account of his astonishing and amazing experiences are published in his memoir from 2011 titled “Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master - A Yogi’s Autobiography“, which became an instant bestseller. He has written a sequel to his autobiography, titled “Sri M - The journey continues”. He has written two more books - Shunya, his first novel and his latest one being - 'On Meditation', a book which answers questions on meditation.
Sri M has traveled the world fulfilling his life’s mission to teach and guide people as instructed by his Master, Maheswarnath Babaji. Over the years, Sri M’s mission as a spiritual guide, social reformer and educator have given rise to many initiatives including:
- high-quality, multi-lingual education, free to rural children
- Satsang Rural School - an unique and innovative approach to education.
- Co-educational, residential school committed to providing in-depth exploration of knowledge.
- Affordable, preventive and curative holistic health care
In 2015, Sri M went on a 16-month journey, Walk of Hope, from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, spanning 5000 miles across 11 states of India, to bring attention to humanity’s need for peace, harmony and tolerance.
Sri M says: “Go to the core. Theories are of no use.” His message seeks to transcend the outer-shell of all religions, by exploring their mystical essence and thus nurture the innate goodness in every human being. To know more about Sri M and his programs, please log on to :

One of the most practical spiritual teachers i've had the fortune of listening to
Putting here for a quick reference. Do go through the video fully (swadhyaya).
Yama:
12:45 1. Ahimsa : non violence - Don't hurt.. No violence in thought, in words, in intensions / emotions about anyone / anything. Watch the thoughts and cut down hatred, jealousy and hurtful feelings.
17:17 2. Satya : stick to the truth - bring down the number of lies I tell out of compulsion or fear or just for show off.
19:10 3. Astheya : not stealing - Remove thought of having something that does not belong to me. Applies to desire for the person of opposite sex as well.
21:38 4. Brahmacharya : Restrain on Sex - Sexual desire should listen to my mind and not the other way around.
25:22 5. Aparigraha : non possession - simple living and always remember that things that I have can go away anytime. Don't take things for granted.
Niyama:
29:55 1. Shoucha: purity - physical cleanliness and mental purity as well
30:35 2. Santhosha : Contentment - Understand that happiness is a state of mind. External stuff can't bring peace.
32:27 3. Tapa : fire - to find the ultimate truth.
34:43 4. Swadhyaya: self study - study Bhagavad gita / upanishads / bhahma sutras / yoga sutras / Bhagavatam / complete works of swamy vivekananda
36:10 5. Ishwara Pranidhana - dedicate life to Ishwara - think that a spark of the divine exists within me and fix attention on it.
26:45 Mahavratham - observe these at all times in all places.
Thank you
Thank you very much, dear friend, for this summary🙏
Thank you so much Sir 🙏🙏
THANKS MAHN
Thanks
Guruji’s sense of humor is absolutely brilliant
I just love the practicality of what Sri M presents. He takes the perspective of a beginner. It is most grounding in how life actually is. I had an idea that I am at some advanced stage of spiritual evolution. Listening to Sri M is most illuminating and revealing as to the reality of my current state. In fact, I now feel more compassionate towards my own ignorance.

@Brendan
I know what you mean.
When I see more clearly and forgive my lack, it becomes easier to forgive lack in others. This is one of the best benefits.
🙏
Jennifer Grove , Indeed. This is a journey of Self awareness and it is a journey of knowledge plus experience. Knowledge without experience is a waste of time for us householders. Sri M speaks to householders because he is a householder himself. Hence the more I understand my own ignorance the more compassion I feel for others.
Brendan Kelly, Your words resonate exactly with what I feel about my state.
I feel the same , i love Sri M ❤
Listening to you is like taking a personal class from Patanjali! Thank you for your widsom! Om Hreem Shri Gurubhyo Namaha!

Your teachings are so easy, that if anyone who which to follow the spiritual path can repeatedly hearing the same, can practice it. I'm lucky to hear you Sir.
@@adnanadill I'm not talking about religion, I'm talking above them, about the absolute truth, which sufism teaches. Neither Muslim nor Hindu temples and mosques can give you inner peace or to reach the real reality, create peace within the world will become a better better place to live in. What Sri M is teaching have you heard, same thing is in Quran, so follow the Quran you will get answer.
@@shaaradpandey5546 yes we are practicing to remove our obstacles which stop us to reach the path of God. And it doesn't take times because as soon as you are determined, your body mind use to follow it without your notice yes although blessings of a Guru is essential and for this we are lucky enough to have ours.
@@adnanadill by birth Muslim or Hindu will not purify you nor becoming intellectual by reading religious text, but following the right path which as a human being is applicable to all human being.
Your talk gave me immense joy

Thank you sir. I think you nailed these two anges. Of all your talks I regard this one the best and more reviling.
In my limited experience, as you mentioned, as one practices Pratyahara and develops Dharana naturally, Yamas and Niyams become elevated. As you said, without purity and innocence surely nothing can be gained in this Sadhana.
God Bless
Ekdam acha h
My salute to amazing explanation, I am Practicing heartfulness meditation and Salute

Sri M: it's VERY DIFFICULT! one pointed attention, total understanding is necessary.... It's like walking on razors edge! One fall and you can't stand up! I AM DOING IT FROM SEVERAL LIFE TIMES.. stop.. leave this.. go home have a drink....
Also Sri M: it's very easy... Don't worry! 😂

Can you please tell us what is the difference between a Rishi, A Yogi, A sanyasi, etc?
Amazing and deep explanation ❤What edition of "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" book Sri M is using? Thank you 🙏
Hari Om, I like Sri M and his insights a lot. Thank you. In the context of BrahmaCharya - I feel you took a narrower meaning of the word in this context. Isn't the meaning of BrahmaCharya to say? - In the path of seeking Brahman, conserving energy in speech, thinking and work etc..
Swadhyaya
Upanishads, Gita, Bhrama Sutras, Bhagavat, Yoga Sutras and The complete works of Swami Vivekananda
🙏🏽
Friends, do any one of you know which book is Sri M referring to ? I know its Pathanjali's Yoga Sutra but which book is it?
What is the english translation of the yoga sutras does he recommend?

In the Talk Sri M refers to a previous talk on the Samadhi Pada....I have searched but can't seem to find it So as to Be able to start with his Beautiful Commentary at the beginning of the Slokas.......Although as M Suggests Starting with the Yamas and Niyamas is Really Important as a Base for all other practices in the Yoga Sutras...... So I was Wondering whether Someone could post a link So it's possible to to go back and Hear Sri M's Beautiful commentary on the Samadhi Panda Sometime Soon..... Pranams Sri M for All of Your Beautiful Teachings Thanks So much & Blessings and Pranams to All....!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)
Svadhyaya is used exclucively to study shastras and recite mantras. It doesn't mean self study of just anything.
