We lived outside of Chicago for 50 years and moved out of Illinois in 2016. Illinois is very strict on speeding in a construction zone. They never let you off the hook . It’s a guaranteed ticket. There have been a lot of fatalities with construction works. I’m sorry you didn’t notice the change in speeds! I don’t know how fast you were going over. Depending how fast you were going it could be jail time. Look up Illinois construction ticket fines. You may want to consult with an attorney that deals with traffic violations.

Yep, I, too, got pulled over in a Chicago construction zone. My son, whose we’re heading for a visit, said, “I know why you got pulled over. You had an out of state license.” Thank goodness I ended up with a warning!!! I was 5 miles over!!! You are having quite the adventure!! Leo and Billy are such good travelers! Glad you survived sleeping in Gary, IN! Sorry about that bee sting….ouch! It is wonderful that you are taking a well deserved break, connecting with old friends, and making fun memories! I'm LOVING you being back on the road in a van!
    Things:
Thing 1: being asked to get into a police vehicle when you've been stopped is normal here in the UK. They will often do a breath test as well as checking documentation. Course, over here the cops dont have guns and there's very little fear of 'what will they do?"!
Thing 2: seeing Allie striding through Chicago with one son strapped to her and one in a buggy, her hair blowing in the wind, smiling, and looking confident and excited is an absolute joy! I am in awe of you, Allie, you are a Wonder Woman!

I've been an officer for 39 years. Pulling someone out of their car is a way, but can change from state to state. This is also a way to talk to people by separating them specifically when the vehicle stopped has an out of state tag. Numerous state police agencies do this for safety reasons and not stand on the side of the road.

Just so you know, it was just a drug interdiction stop. Yes, this is normal. You’re in a van, out of state tags. Typical for these kinds of stops. They separate you and ask each of you the same questions to make sure you give the same answers. The fact that you were not searched means they were ok with the stop. Also, read the options on the ticket. It may not be mandatory to appear but just one of three options.

They said it was odd I was alone 🙄 They lured me away from my RV, then grabbed my phone out of my hands, LOCKED me in their car while they searched my RV for 20 minutes. The initial stop was ‘following too close’ which was BS. Then they had a dog walk around the RV and said it alerted them 🙄BS again.

This is a common practice in Illinois. There has been several deaths of construction workers on I55 & I80. They even created some signs a few years back to warn about the construction zones and workers. In general the State police are decent. Some of the actual Chicago Police are a different story. Please do your research on areas you have been traveling in that part of the country. Gary, IN, Lower Wacker Drive etc. These places are notorious for crime of all sorts.

Being put into the back of a police car is not new. Being stopped & accused of things like straying between lane lines, touching white line, driving exceptionally slow, erratically, & out of control even in heavy rain & wind are common new buzz words they say imply drunk driver & use to stop. The chat is to try to find more to charge you (alcohol, drugs), to justify the stop, & is the new standard since laws changed on stopping. Yet, the key thing is those large signs saying speeding in construction can result in high fines & jail time is really because of there was an increase in deaths of construction workers & others. The state has had massive construction projects the last few years improving interstate highways, making speeding, road rage, & crazing driving increase. This week a 28 yr old state police officer was killed, in Illinois, because someone violated traffic laws. Hard to see the jokes, humor, or insults on this topic.

I am happy that you got a chance to experience riding "The El" (yes Trent, elevated transit/train) It brought back memories of growing up in The Chi. The traffic stop was not uncommon for construction zone violations. Illinois State Police are pretty strict. I hope you don't get home and find you have electronic traffic violations for driving in the city. Chicago is very strict for "rolling stops". All intersections are equipped with cameras that can detect the smallest of traffic infractions. They send pictures of your license plate (tags) in the mail with very detailed information and a fine!
So glad you guys had a good time and great adventures in the new van! Sorry about the bee sting, Allie.

As a former Corporate Safety Director for a construction company, I believe the officer did you a favor! Once you pay this fine and all the costs associated with it, you’ll be more cognizant of construction zones and likely never make that mistake again.
Sadly, I have worked on numerous vehicular homicide fatality cases over the years. The usual line is “I didn't know”… When literally right outside your window during the traffic stop is an orange safety barrel and one every 250’ (depending on the speed limit) throughout the work zone.
FYI - The larger projects in Illinois and many other states have hired LEO costs built into the bid proposals. Also, in Illinois, fines double in construction zones and as you learned, require a court appearance. You could also see an insurance company rate hikes as well. Because construction zone speeding points are similar to school zone speeding points and often result in premium increases. If possible, pay the higher fine to get court supervision. You really don't want this type of ticket on your record.
Its not just you Trent, we all need to be more aware when entering/driving through a construction zone. Ironically, we all know when we’ve hit the end of one but don't recognize the beginning. 🤔

It was exactly the same, give me your materials, then without checking first get out and come to my car. I reused to get in his car at first, that up set him when I asked why I should get in, he said for safety sake, I was on the grass along the road. I guess by refusing him he gave me a ticket for 158 dollars. I found out later the normal ticket was 58.00. He told me since I was from Indiana I should send the payment in to the address on the ticket and a warning not to speed in Illinois again. Very rude, I mentioned that when I sent in the check to pay.

Hi. Exactly the same thing happened to us in the UK about 12 years ago and my husband was asked to step into the back of the police car. At the time we were towing our caravan and were on our way from the north of England to the south coast. Luckily we had our insurance documents with us as the police car had picked up that we had no insurance! We had and it had renewed 4 months previously. We found out that the insurance company had NOT updated the DVLA! Because the police had stopped us we had to leave the motorway at the next exit and ring the insurance company to get things corrected. So Ali I know EXACTLY how you felt when Trent had to get into the back of the police vehicle. Really upsetting. So pleased that you were able to carry on with your journey xx🤩

Yes, the police are a bit out of control in this country. Not every policeman, of course, but enough to make even outstanding white people nervous.

Seems the police was doing his job, enforcing the law. Why people expect to be allowed to just get off is a mystery to me. A cop has no idea who is in a car when they pull it over, it is the most dangerous part of their job. The cop had no way of knowing Trent and Allie are good people.

I know someone who received a speeding ticket out of their state and they too were required to appear in court. They called the phone # on the ticket & the court waived them appearing in person. They mailed in the fee with the courts approval. Try calling. Glad it wasn't any worse of a situation

We had a wired and scary encounter in NH one time. Florida plates. We had bags of laundry in the back on our way to the laundry mat. They asked my kids if we were there parents and why were even there. Finally loosened up when we told them we were visiting relatives up there

I had stings when I was on holiday in Orlando when I went out to the car to collect parcels from the trunk of the car. I literally screamed as it was so painful and I thought I had been bitten by a snake. When I went to the pharmacist, she told me that I had been stung by what they called skinny wasps. She gave me medication but I had an extremely sore hand for a couple of weeks. Hope that’s not what you have Allie and it feels better soon.

Two things that can help a bee/wasp sting, fire ant bite. 1) Make a paste with baking soda, put it on the sting/bite and bandage over it to hold it there for at least an hour. 2) If you are where you can find some plantain herb (yep, the lawn weed), chew it up, put on the bite, again bandage it in place.

There is so much to see and do in Chicago- I hope you are able to go back sometime- the Natural History Museum, the Aquarium, Lake Michigan & the beach would’ve been great fun for Leo! We used to live in SW Michigan and we’d go to Chicago for fun - our kids lived the Natural History Museum with the dinosaurs.

I was married to a State Trooper and this is a normal situation, each State is different. But driving through a construction zone above the speed limit is another story. He was trying to give you maybe advice about being more observant in a construction zone which is a dangerous job for employee's that work on those highways and want to go home safely after their work is done??? Awareness of sign's is very important now right? So sorry you had that happen and an expensive experience for sure.
