    To have those type of existential questions is pretty normal for people your age. I think it is healthy; no one really knows what they want or has all the answers. The people who pretend they do, or who ignore those questions, are usually the ones who have real problems. Accumulate knowledge as you go along and things will fall into place. All the books you mention are essential to that. Love your channel, very peaceful.

    One thing that’s helped me really ground myself in what i want and get some direction in my life is sobriety. It’s been hard since I’ll always find a reason to smoke or drink but it’s helped a lot in terms of progressing in life. Sobriety doesn’t have to be for forever tho 😀

    Erich Maria Remarque had immense impact on me. Most notably Arch of Triumph, Black Obelisk and Three Comrades. Lastly - The Night in Lisbon.
    He has a very poetic way of writing riveting and real romantic stories. Actually absorbing them seriously develops you as a better person, IMHO.

    One of the more interesting and influential books I've ever read was "Evil: The Shadow Side of Reality" by John A. Sanford (who is a priest and a psychologist, if I remember correctly). It explores the concept of evil from both a religious point of view as well as psychology, and was the first book I'd read that discussed the concept of "the shadow," in terms of personality, which I found utterly fascinating. One of the other many ideas presented was of evil as that against which good must be tested in order to be known. Anyway, perhaps you'd find it interesting, too.

      thank you! this sounds super interesting, especially given the author’s position as a psychologist and priest. i had a professor who was both a psychologist and a minister, i took his class on psychology of religion/spirituality and it was great! thanks for the recommendation:)

    Existential moments are what center what really matters to you. It's important to find that because (as someone a couple years older than you) just getting a job won't answer that, or even if you had enough money to live comfy, you'll still be seeking whatever it is you want. It's about finding and pursuing what matters in life for you
    Book recs:
    - The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy by William James (specifically 'Is Life Worth Living'). You might also be interested in parts of The Specter of the Absurd by Donald Crosby, tho it's a longish philosophy book. Also, Mortal Questions by Thomas Nagel.
    - Dostoevsky's novels: Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov - they're long and take a while to go through, but all get you thinking about what matters in life
    - The Plague by Camus is, imo, better than The Stranger
    - maybe you'd like The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas
    Thanks for posting, let us know what you end up reading

    You can quit most jobs at any time. If you wait for job inspiration, it may never come.
    It's even possible your inspiration is waiting for you during one of your shifts or in a conversation with a colleague.
    You also have the option for something part time.
    Other advice would be to do a job where you feel you are giving back or contributing to the success of the organization.
    Lastly, colleagues are the 2nd most important thing so if you can think of a job that has like-minded people, give it a shot!
    I definitely agree that people should work to live and not live to work. If they can of course.

    It's the end of year 'and what have you done' feels -- which is intense.
    As others prob suggest, volunteering maybe beneficial in exploring options (or perhaps a useful distraction). Find areas of potential interest (books, outdoors, animal welfare, etc) and commit some time. Dunno -- it's difficult, but sometimes making a start is a start.
    Also, learn a pragmatically useful skill.
    Maybe couple 1984 with Huxley's, Brave New World. . . both prescient.
    (Then again, AI is upon us so social conditioning a whole new level.)
    Keep playing around with music/beats. Have fun.
    Thanks for the asmr.

      Life is as much beautiful as it is horrible. If you focus on either side you limit yourself and that makes it hard so see clear. Accept that there is good and bad and pick your own way. If you believe that it will become worse, you set yourself up for only that.

      I feel like it may be dangerous to equate faith with a religious text. No religion can be, nor should be, reduced to its religious text. Religion and spirituality are very powerful - they can help people feel less lost, for example - but I think it’s more about the subject’s belief and faith than it is about reading the text since those are just words. Anyhow, it’s good to feel lost sometimes - that’s how you find things!

    • @johnruder5623
      @johnruder5623 22 дні тому

      @ You seem highly intelligent, especially in the field of philosophy and religion. However, it is a mistake to equate the Bible to mere words or text on a page. It is the Words of God Himself. Life’s brevity is often ignored in youth, but is a hard reality as we age. I pray you will find true peace and contentment through the only one that provides it; the Prince of Peace.

    • @a_gapa
      @a_gapa  17 днів тому

      The Bible is only the Words of God insofar as the person reading those words has faith and belief in God. If a person reading the Bible has no faith/belief in God, then it is just words on a page by some (perhaps) unknown author. You can find peace and contentment in God - I can find peace and contentment in Nature. People are different. Not everyone finds peace and contentment in the same entity, just let it be.
