    Correction regarding the batteries. This IS the larger batt available in FXS atm. The sizes for this bike are 3.6 and this the 7.2. The even larger battery the 14.4 are in other models. Sorry for that confusion this has been a very steep learning curve for me unlike the petrol bikes this is all new to myself. As you can imagine with all the models and specs they are not hard to confuse. However this doesn't change anything from these videos only the limits of the tech right now with this model. Please not the bike had gone back the same day the first video went to UA-cam so it was not possible for me to correct this after it was pointed out.

    I imagine this'd be the ideal motorcycle for somebody that lived in London, was fed up with public transport and wanted to try out commuting on a motorcycle. Being able to simply do a cbt and then ride this seems really appealing, especially when you consider the price of season rail tickets. In such a situation the range wouldn't be an issue either!

    I could actually write an essay on what I think this bike represents. People seem to really not “get it” as to why someone would choose this type of bike. It’s something to think really about when it comes to fun/saving money/going greener. *Please correct me if I’m wrong.*
    Forgetting it’s £10k - this bike literally destroys the future costs and upkeep discussion when it comes to other vehicles. The running costs of my diesel car in comparison to this - make it look like I’m spaffing money up the wall. Tax, insurance, fuel, maintenance and parts all adds up to a considerable sum.
    At home we have a YBR 125 - the running costs are ridiculously low. The downsides of the 125 will always be it’s limitations in power and the restrictions in place if the rider doesn’t have their full license. (Of course this will be different for everyone but I use motorways a lot) if a 125 is all one needs to get to work, go to the shop or cafe then why change? It’s so cheap to run.
    The Zero then has all the benefits of low cost maintenance - even possibly lower than a 125 and then all the benefits of having the power and acceleration comparable to a bigger motorcycle.
    It’s not going to replace the commuter vehicle or the motorcycle but it is going to give people a completely different option when it comes to their own personal transport.
    Especially now in the current climate where there are people out there who suddenly no longer need to travel long distances anymore. I just honestly feel this is something people should consider in the long run - if you were to buy this bike, you will literally only have to worry about the tyres, brakes, belt/chain and that the battery is in good condition. Plus theres the benefits of not annoying the neighbours in the early hours or late at night. If you were to take the FX model on the green lanes and not spook the walkers / horses / wildlife. If you were to take it into London you are exempt from all charges which quite frankly is excellent for going around the city. Yes, it’s not for long distances and there are other bikes and even other Zero bikes that fill those roles.
    I’m just fascinated by it but also peoples reactions when they immediately disregard this bike because it doesn’t have a engine or it doesn’t have the range of a normal bike.

      10k is just too much. The big 4 are already working on their e bikes which I'm guessing will be vastly superior and about the same price. Also I would be surprised if Tesla doesn't get in on e bikes. My only issue is all ev are so quiet and that's worse with bikes.

    What kind of charging setup does this have? I know you said it's standard kettle plug, but can you plug it into a supermarket charging point for 30 minutes while you shop, (my local Tesco has the charge pod) Or do you have to just leave it plugged in at home and wake up every morning to a 'full tank'? Do you think biker friendly cafés would be more willing to throw an extension cable out for bikers charging while having a quick soda, than have a couple of full size charging points added to their carpark?

    I get the same problem with pedestrian when driving a hybrid car at slow speeds. I think you’ll get used to judging speed in a different way 😄.
    As a car driver I’m not sure about the noise warning; I always give motorbikes more room to filter when I see them. But modern cars have lots of insulation; so I don’t hear most bikes until point blank range in a traffic jam (so slow speeds) at speed I get more noise warning and time to manoeuvre in advance.

Been looking into electric motors (As I do have an ebike I enjoy, it feels like a more natural progression than a car) and honestly, I'm leaning towards picking up my CBT and something like this just to get me on the roads. I'm seeing these 2nd hand for about £6-7k now which still isn't cheap, but not the worst and picking up a CBT is was easier than getting a full driver/A licence, which I can get done later.

    You touched upon having a clutch for slow moving fine controls. Do you think having a clutch and gear lever added with the app allowing you to setup 'gear' ranges and emulated clutch would help the more 'seasoned' motorcyclist transition to an EV bike away from their geared petrol bike?
    The UK has always been gear stick drive with cars and one of the biggest hurdles for people moving to an EV is always getting used to automatic 'gears' even though it's only 1 gear, the lack of gear stick seems to be a stumbling problem. People expect to be able to drop down a gear and get more power. If the app could setup the bike as such, emulating the RPM range of power bands for each gear, allowing for clutch control etc I think it'd help. More so when the purists bang on about feeling one with the road and using all the gears. I know it'd probably use more electric in the process and not give all the torque all the time etc, but it might be a nice addition for those who like to use gears.

    • @gallaghergibson8024
      @gallaghergibson8024 3 роки тому

      Perhaps. One of the things I don't like is the feeling that the computer's driving the bike, that it's intermediating between me and the tyre. If you whack the throttle fully open suddenly, instead of delivering full power immediately, it smoothly accelerates to top speed. That suggests to me that it's programmed to deliver power safely, as opposed to being responsive to the rider's input. It's possible that what you describe would make the bike feel more under my control. At the moment, it's got to handle a range of speeds between 0-86mph with one throttle's spectrum, whereas if I had a whole throttle to handle say, 0-25mph, then upshifting gave me access to a slightly higher band, and so on, perhaps more control over the throttle's input could be attained.
      OTOH, I'm quite used to the way the bike behaves, and not having to shift means lower cognitive load which means better concentration on hazard development. So I'm not sure EVs will see this as a big enough problem to warrant effort solving.

    I have been watching quite a lot of the vids regarding electric bikes. And all of the testing, riding etc has been done on basically flat level terrain. I had an electric bike in China for just over 4 years. The city where I lived again was very flat, very little gradient’s. I am back in the UK looking to get a bike. Maybe petrol, maybe electric. My concern is, my Chinese bike was a 72volt, do not know what the torque was etc. I could get 55kmh full charged. It had 3 speed settings on it. But it did not seem to be gutsy. Now the town I live in the UK, the main shops are in a valley and the housing is around on both sides up big long hills some as long as a 1km+ long. My Chinese bike would be shot after not too long. Is there a good electric bike out there, or is it best to get a 125cc petrol?

    • @spicy110

      For this exact bike you only "need" a CBT but going for a full licence is a good idea. At 24 and over you can take your full A license that allows you to ride anything. There is no point doing A2 as it's the same tests and costs but restricts what you can ride. A1 is for if you only ever want a 125cc or equivalent electric.

    We've kinda been here before, if you're old enough to remember the Suzuki X7 the 100mph learner bike which got the rules changed to restrict learners to restricted 125s. It's not actually a good thing to give learners more performance than they can handle.

    Potentially, if I was getting a commuter bike this would be a good shout - however at 10k for something I'd leave outside the office or at the train station it's not a winning proposition. I'll keep using one of my beater bikes.
    I'm happy for electric bikes to mature, and I appreciate that people who buy these are more or less taking it on the chin for the rest of us - but the range, charging infrastructure and prices just aren't there yet.

      Have to wait and see what happens on Tesla battery day. If there's some movement on charge time it could help.
      Part of the issue is that the smaller batteries in bikes don't lend themselves to DC fast charging, so a battery the tenth the size of one from a car takes the same amount of time to charge.
      If charging time for a hundred miles of sports bike riding can come down to ten minutes we're onto a winner - I'd pay the £15k for that.

    Very expensive!
    However....it could be the only bike you ever need, if it will do 70-80 all day(so long as there’s sufficient charge in the battery and chargers locally).
    Unlike a 125 internal combustion it’s less likely to “blow up”.
    I’m not against electric bikes and cars, they are pretty quick and can be a lot of fun, but the price would need to come down a fair bit more before a lot of people inc myself would buy one.

  • @MegaNayton
    @MegaNayton 3 роки тому +2

    £10k is steep. It's still a great bike but I believe prices definitely need to come down for people to really consider moving over to such a bike. The low running cost isn't really a positive as most 125s are cheap to run anyway. But I guess the maintenance and service costs being literally none existant as electric doesn't need regular oil changes ect and is supposed to be more reliable than a petrol bike. So that would probably help with the initial outlay of 10k but you only see the benefits of that if you keep the bike over an X amount of years or you do loads of miles on it in a short amount of time owning one. But that will be hard to do as range isnt all that great compared to a normal bike where you can go and fill up the tank in minutes and be back riding where this it probably take 10hrs for it to charge or possibly longer
