Thanks Stuart, yes indeed both proper pubs! The Juggs in Kingston is a particular surprise as it's quite a posh village really, you could easily imagine somewhere like that the pub having turned into more of a swanky gastropub and lost all its charm.
Thanks JRD! I found it very gratifying to be able to get hold of a producer of Gevrey Chambertin I know Floyd was a fan of, and I get the sense that stylistically it's probably still fairly similar to how it was in his day.
That meal looked delicious. As did those proper pints. Bitter should be brown, not blonde - he says in grumpy old man style. Looked like a very pleasant Spring walk on a lovely old route. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks WC21! I'm very fond of the Sussex motto "We wunt be druv" (roughly translated: "we won't be told what to do"), and while the rest of the country seems to be capitulating to the seemingly unstoppable onslaught of American style "craft" (i.e. grapefruit flavoured) beer, Sussex has issued a resounding "Nope". Harveys is an institution, and I've often noticed an apologetic / shame filled air from staff of any pub in Sussex which doesn't serve it. Yes I very much enjoyed this springtime walk, and this way round (starting at Brighton) hardly any hills to climb!
Thanks Ysgolgerlan! The South Downs obviously doesn't feel as gloriously wild and untamed as, say, the Carneddau, but I think it has its own kind of gentle beauty... and you're never far from a pub!
Ahh, the South Downs Way. This takes me back. So many happy memories of walking and travelling around Sussex and visiting Brighton, Lewes, Eastbourne, etc over many decades and the ever lovely, “Hove, actually”. There is a very interesting Camera Obscura near Hove, not sure if it’s still open to the public any more.
Yes I have a deep affection for the South Downs (and the rest of Sussex), even though I only really properly discovered it as recently as 2018. Before that I just didn't think there would be such nice countryside so close to London!
Thanks Purdy Rocky! Of course the same meal would work with real steak... and I definitely wouldn't claim the fake version is better than the real thing. Perhaps the slight advantage of the fake steak is that (A) it comes already coated in the peppercorns and (B) maybe it keeps slightly better out of the fridge...? I do think polenta is worth considering for camp cooking - a bit like cous cous or instant mash - it's very weight efficient and as long as you get the quick cook variety it's very quick / fuel efficient too. Flavour wise I was a bit underwhelmed the first few times but like any kind of food it tastes much better with salt and lots of butter!
Hi Tweedy, great video. Love the panoramic English countryside. Nice and green. the meal looked great. As did the pint and wine. Thanks for sharing Dave 🇬🇧 🇳🇿
Thanks Dave! Yes it was a very nice afternoon out, the weather was grey and dreary all day in London apparently but just an hour's train journey to the south glorious blue skies and sunshine!
My Sunday morning coffee and a Tweedy adventure, priceless. I would love to go to the Lewes Pub! It does look like a magical place! And I'll be subscribing to your wine channel straight away of course because I absolutely love your wine reviews. Another job well done Sir! Cheers! 🎩🍻🍾🍷
Thanks Jamie, as always, for such a nice comment! I can't quite put my finger on why the Lewes Arms is so special but it somehow embodies the town of Lewes, which in turn embodies Sussex. For somewhere so close to London you'd think Lewes might just be another boring commuter town but it's actually fiercely independent and always has been. Not just their famously controversial Bonfire Night celebrations (where they traditionally burn an effigy of the Pope, as well as typically the current UK prime minister every year), but they're so protective of their local beer (Harveys) that there were practically riots in the street when the Lewes Arms changed owners and there was a suggestion they might no longer serve it.
@@tweedyoutdoors Your very welcome! Yes just the feeling I got from the imagery when you first walked into that Pub made me want to go there. I'm a girl that gets "feelings" about everything lol, and just seeing that place in this video I know I would be quite comfortable hanging out there. 🎩🍺👍
@@jamierobinson3349 I know what you mean! I can usually tell within a matter of seconds - even from the outside a lot of the time - whether I'm going to like a pub or not. The Lewes Arms was definitely love at first sight!
Ah yes that was a glaring omission! Yes I would recommend it for a pleasant afternoon stroll, and not too taxing if you start from the Brighton end as I did - somehow I barely noticed any hills.
Nice to see you down our 'ends' as the urban youths apparently say :) *edit I've been trying to remember the name of the Lewes Arms til watching this. Stumbled across it one afternoon and it's a real gem
I'm very envious if you live down that way! If I didn't have work / family commitments here in London I would move to Sussex in a heartbeat, and most likely Lewes. Ideally just round the corner from the Lewes Arms. As I mentioned in other comments I can't really put my finger on what it is about that pub but it's magical. One of my all time favourites.
@@tweedyoutdoors I felt like I was actually in someone's terraced front room when I first went into the front bar. Doesn't get more homely than that. But even sitting on the pavement on that corner on a sunny midweek afternoon was wonderful. I live in Brighton which is obviously very diverse with much to do but Lewes holds a special magic for me too. So much to recommend it. Beautiful too
The GoPro warping is back. Any chance you are perhaps having lunch on the site of an ancient cemetery? Or that part of the landscape where ancient priests strangled criminals, the terror of which soaked into the landscape like blood, casting shadows from the past into the present. Or a place cursed to immortal memory so long ago we have forgotten? Were there any stones nearby where perhaps the ancestors were bought out, their bones mingled and then re-sorted until finally being replaced in some dell nearby where both they and their mound return to dust leaving only angry spirits trying every means possible to show themselves to the living. Like distorting lenses. A quid says there is a record there on the historical and environmental record.
Thank you for that comment, it really made me smile. After a series of extremely unpleasant comments on another video in the last day or two I really needed that to restore my faith in humanity a bit. The strange warping has happened to me a few times now in the past few weeks, including in footage at home and in my local park, so I'm not sure it's location specific!! It only seems to happen when the GoPro is stood on its little tripod, for slightly longer videos (more than just a couple of minutes). My theory is that the stabilisation logic becomes disgruntled at having nothing to do and decides it will spring to life and mess things up.
I had to look up "banty" (thought it might be a variant of "bantzy"...?). Is that in the sense of a short aggressive person? I didn't think the people of Sussex were particularly either albeit quite determined and not easily led (per "we wunt be druv").
Lovely day and very scenic with 2 proper pubs , cheers John

There’s also a Kingston in Ontario Canada. It’s a pretty big city.
