A walk in the South Downs: Southease to Lewes via Breaky Bottom and Kingston

  • A final hurrah of the summer - at the end of August I did a walk in the South Downs, starting at Southease station, and ending at Lewes, in a sort of D (or maybe U?) shaped route. Along the way I passed by Breaky Bottom vineyard, explored an interesting bit of Open Access land near there, then along the ridge of the downs to Kingston-near-Lewes, where I descended the hill, and followed the Juggs Road from there to Lewes. Caught a nice sunset as I was passing the windmill just outside of Kingston, and ended with a (likely controversial) dinner of cheesy chips and curry sauce at the Lewes Fish Bar.
    For the bits at (or at least near) Breaky Bottom vineyard see the ‪@EnglishSparklingWine‬ video • Breaky Bottom: England...

    Greetings from an expat living in Canada. Poutine (poo-teen) is chips, cheese curds and gravy (usually chicken gravy). To be enjoyed infrequently!

    Great to come home and have these Tweedy videos to relax with after a busy day on the buses! The scenery is absolutely stunning as usual. The fizz looked lovely too. Thanks John

    Having mountain biked the South Downs, I can assure you that they are excitingly steep! Came close to having a breaky bottom tbh! Thanks for the video - chips were a great idea.

    Nice walk I feel your pain waking though the thorns. Lovely part the Downs. I camped next to the bridge you went over when I hiked the South Downs way.

    Great video. Lewes is a lovely town. Your pronunciation of poutine is admirable. I see it dished up a lot here but have never tried it. Always appears as though someone has mashed up a lot of leftovers. Your chips looked great. I miss Irish/ British chips. I remember over fifty years ago when there was a drive on promoting British wines. I seem to recall the 'wine critics' in the press gaining much amusement from the promotion. Well, no one is laughing now. Well done British vineyards.

      Thanks Liam! I've never had poutine proper, and I doubt what I had was more than a very distant cousin but I did enjoy it! That said just about everything tastes good after a decent walk.

    Beautiful sunset, great commentary. The path I walk most days, allegedly part of the old road between Oxford and Poole, begins metalled, narrows to a macadamised track then to a footpath onto the Whitsbury Downs. Thank you.

    Hello, Mr Tweedy! I've recently found your channel and the videos you make are a delight. It's lovely too see places featured on outdoors videos that are relatively reachable from where I live, though it's the unashamed and glorious middle class eccentricity that truly sets your content apart. I love the babble, the details about the surroundings, the attempts at more interesting outdoor food and the highly dissonant pairing of high quality wines with "roughing it", because why the heck not? I've only recently rediscovered the joys of escaping outside, and am sorely tempted to equip myself with a polycarbonate wine glass and a bottle of Gevery Chambertin next time I go.

      Thank you! Alas eccentricity seems to be in decline worldwide and so I am trying to do my bit to try and keep it alive!

    I get what you mean about tarmac roads that go nowhere other than a track or path that’s no use to vehicles!
    For me, it’s about an ancient route revealing its true nature and shrugging off the trappings of modernity! Pretentious, I know!
    Lovely sunset once again and those chips looked good!

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  29 днів тому +1

      Yes I think that's it - it's almost like a living piece of archaeology! The track wasn't named on the OS map but if it had been I'm almost certain it would have been called something like "Kingston Bostal", and at the point it becomes no longer usable by cars, we see it revert to its original state.

    Yet another lovely video from the region of the South Downs! Thank you for risking life, limb and tweed to share your picturesque adventure. I’ll be in Lewes tomorrow to finally tour Harvey’s Brewery and enjoy a Best Bitter from the source…many thanks for the recommendation! Please stay safe and keep ‘em coming! CHEERS!!! 🍻

    "Ouse" might not be a very appealing name, but frankly I find "Breaky Bottom" even more disconcerting. Hopefully the curry sauce and cheesy chips didn't join in on this particular gastrointestinal theme! Haha!
    Also, I have a feeling that I'll be humming "I've got a lovely bunch of scabious" for the rest of the day...

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  24 дні тому +1

      Yes Breaky Bottom is a silly name isn't it! I believe it's an old name for that little dip in the landscape, and was in use long before the vineyard was established.
      Sorry for the ear worm!

    Love these English countryside rambles Tweedy. Beautiful country. In Quebec (kaybec) it's pronounced poo-tin, not teen. :-) And the traditional or original is fries, (chips) gravy and white cheddar cheese curds.Yum! I assume the Breaky Bottom partaking portion will be on your English Sparkling channel?

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  24 дні тому +1

      Thanks Kevin! Yes I assumed that strange meal I ate at the end was at best a very distant cousin of the real thing - which I don't think I've ever actually had! Whatever it was I ate though, I did quite enjoy it. Does the recipe ever get tweaked in Quebec? I wonder for example if the gravy might get "Frenched up" a bit with, say, a red wine and onion reduction...? Or are people generally quite purist about it?

    I read the title too quickly and thought you were going to walk from Southsea, near the downs but nowhere near Lewes!!
    Although Ive never been on this part it reminded me of Butser Hill. Fantastic shot of the sunset with the windmill and the maize maze or is that maze maize I really dont know!!
    Was the curry sauce made from vegetables only? Not sure about the cheese sauce though.
    A great days walk to your favourite vinyard, well done
    All the best!!

      Thanks - Lewes has so much going for it, it sells itself! Sometimes I really can't be bothered with the cooking to be honest - it can take ages assembling all the kit and ingredients and there are times when I just want to just put on my walking boots and head straight out the door!

    I discovered your channel a week or two ago and since then have worked through your entire "back catalogue" of videos, like I once did with Rush albums after discovering them far too late in life. Both have been an utter joy (although Rush win, obviously!)
    Ever thought of a Trangia for your cooking? As a fellow believer of cooking decent food outdoors I wouldn't be without mine.

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  24 дні тому +2

      Thank you! You probably found the quality of the camera work / editing deteriorated as you went further back in time - but that said expectations on those fronts were likely quite low to begin with!
      I do have a Trangia burner (not the whole cookset). I've just toyed with it in the back garden a couple of times but haven't yet taken it out properly. I do think they have a lot going for them - I get the sense it's a bit easier to achieve a slightly gentler burn than it seems to be with my gas stove. I've also seen people do really interesting thinks with the full cook sets, like using them to create a sort of oven. That's definitely quite appealing as it opens up the scope to a lot of dishes I previously thought impossible to cook outdoors!

    I do like a little bit of Lewes.
    How do you recognise Open Access Areas so easily ? Do you refer to OS Maps for that detail ? Or is there some other more obvious detail ?

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  24 дні тому

      I agree, Lewes is great!
      Yes I use OS maps to identify Open Access land - I have the app on my phone. As it happens some of those bits around Breaky Bottom even had stiles to get over the fences in a couple of places, with old/faded signs highlighting that it was access land. That's not very common though, in my experience.

    Hello Tweedy. Such a fine walk indeed. Plenty of interest and gorgeous landscape. You were indeed blessed with a fine sunset. This walk reminded me of watching Jack Hargreaves narrate an episode of ‘Out of Town’ on a Sunday. As a then city boy I was enthralled by visiting the countryside.
    The “illusion of a track” has gotten the better of my wife and I numerous times. I have learned my lesson and never suggest following them as they all too often reach a dead end, or as happened once, a near cliff edge. 🫣😳🥴
    Cheesy chips and gravy. It’s got to be done. 👏👏👍😀

    Good afternoon, Tweedy.
    A nice walk along lovely chalk downland.
    I can concur with the perils of walking through woods on chalky hillsides with numerous dense patches of hawthorn, blackthorn, and bramble bushes 🤔🤣
    Always admire your "high standards" too - you never forget the ice bucket 😃👍🍾🍷

    A different perspective and mood of the South Downs, and the sunset looks very "picturesque"😊, thank you Tweedy! Will rewatch later more at leisure. BTW, you add to the picturesqueness of the scenery (so no need to get out of the shot). Both the views and you are equally pleasing to the eye. ☺

      Thanks for the very kind words Kathi! On this occasion my commentary there wasn't entirely down to self deprecation, in various frames given the distance involved my head was literally blocking out the entirety of the windmill and/or the sun!
