  • A/C in a Tent is the best way to deal with tent camping
in the hot Texas summers. I've seen lots of videos of people
cutting holes in the sides of their tent to accomodate a
windows air conditioner. Don't wreck your tent, try the
portable A/C instead. We were shocked at how well our portable
A/C worked. The tent was cool and dry all night. Everyone
got a great nights rest. We also cover a few different fan
options, because not everyone lives in Texas, LOL.

It's your camp you can do anything you want, I don't fault people in cold climates for using portable heaters, camping shouldn't be suffering, I wouldn't take it canoe camping in the back country, do you think the solar panels can handle an A/C? Lol thanks for the great video

That solar panel sure wouldn't handle that AC. But, maybe, I could make something work. But by the time I invest that much, might as well just get that travel trailer I want. Thanks for watching, we appreciate you.

We tent camp with our 4 little ones (8, 4, 3, and 10 months) and I would look like a “snowflake” any day if it gets my kids more excited to be outside in nature rather than inside on devices. I used to backpack in west Texas every chance I had in the 1970s. The best way I found to keep cool in at tent in Texas was to camp in the winter! Joking aside it was a nice video. I am looking at one of the A/C unites to put in my overland tent while camping in the summer. Especially in the Southeast.

Great video! I too and from Texas, so I feel your pain. We have been using a portable a/c in our tent for a few years now. We started off with a single hose unit. It does make a difference, but soon discovered how inefficient it really was. A single hose unit actually removes the air your trying to cool. It pulls the air from the area through the unit to cool the coils and actually takes that cooled air and goes right out the vent to the outside, thus creating a vacuum effect which is what causes the tent sides to suck in. I moved up to a dual hose unit which works so much better. It pulls air from the outside to cool the coils and vents it back out so as not using the air you are trying to cool and releasing back outside. There are many videos here on UA-cam that demonstrate this. The biggest downside to dual hose vs single is the cost, but once you step up to a dual you will be much happier with the results. Sorry for the long winded post. Happy Camping!!!

WOW, I'm so glad you stopped by. We recently had our home AC go out and I hooked up the portable in the living room, and an old 8000 window unit in my bedroom. I couldn't figure out why my "single hose" portable was not producing near as much air as the 8,000 BTU window unit. But after reading your comment... you're absolutely right, totally makes sense. I see a Honeywell 12,000 BTU for $549.... I just may buy this.... because reasons, LOL. Thanks for watching and leaving a very helpful comment.

@@kevinunderwood2549 I have never really understood why manufacturers decided it was a good idea to use the single hose on any portable air conditioner for the exact reason you stated. Years ago the central air went out in the house we were living in. I simply could not afford to have it replaced or repaired. I have a very difficult time sleeping when it is too hot but my bedroom didn't have the type of windows to allow for a typical window air conditioner. So I bought one of those small portable units. I do believe it was 8000 BTUs. I'm sure a 5000 BTU window air conditioner would have made the bedroom livable so I figured the slightly larger portable unit would have no problems. But for all the reasons you stated, it did a lousy job of cooling the room. Using duct tape, chloroplast and some old dryer hose I had laying around, I fashioned myself a dual hose unit. This made a world of difference since it was no longer sucking the cool air out of the room. I also took an insulated blanket and wrapped the exhaust hose because it certainly felt like it was radiating an awfully lot of heat from it. Suddenly that little 8000 BTU AC unit was able to sufficiently keep the bedroom and the attached bathroom quite comfortable at night. In the daytime I would leave the bedroom door open and even though the compressor ran all day long, it would lower the temperature in the living room a slight bit and of course cut down on the humidity making it almost bearable to live until I could get the central air unit replaced the next summer.

For those who hate saying it’s not camping ask em “ya ever been on a cruise ship? Yes? Well why didn’t ya swim?” Ok fine mayyyyybe that’s going a little far, then how about “why didn’t you buy a sailboat and sail the whole way.” Why didn’t you drive? Or why did you drive when you coulda got there on a horse? It never stops. People need to chill n be happy outside period. Not everyone is the same. Not the same age, same health status, same weight same abilities, etc. Some got family coming some don’t. Just tell the haters “you do you and that’s it.” I just got a 13’ WD Regatta Bell Tent and it was HOT last week here in Cali at the lake. 106 in the shade is plenty hot for me. Evening time came and it cooled off some but still super hot in the tent with no fans or anything. Gonna fix that with either several fans for next trip next week or a swamp cooler or an AC unit. Haters be damned 😂it’s HOT this summer!!!

A/C camping in Texas, great idea.
I've lived in Texas all my life and gone to lakes and camped all my life.
People not from Texas or southwest don't understand in mid summer, central Texas it's about 10 degrees cooler than the sun. Usually no breeze at and after sunset.
Anyway to cool at night just makes life more tolerable.
Hope you misspoke on last comment, cooler with ducts and fan, you said dry ice. DO NOT use dry ice, produces carbon dioxide. Use regular ice, freeze packs or best block ice and frozen milk jugs. This does work. Styrofoam cooler, ducts to direct airflow, then good small fan blowing thru duct over ice / cold water. Homemade swamp cooler.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  3 роки тому +1

Yes, I mis spoke on the Dry ice situation, a friend who is an AC repair man corrected me on that.
Yeah putting the AC in the tent does ZERO during the day when the sun is blazing on that tent. But after the sun goes down, and it's 85 and muggy outside, this makes the inside of the tent dry and cool, so we can get a great night sleep.

I used to spend a lot of time outdoors growing up in California. The Bay Area used to be a great place with plenty of places to go to. Still has a lot of those places, if you can get in and afford them (I now only visit family and friends there). So having gotten stationed in TX, we chose to stay and raise our family here. But summers suck, too damn hot and humid to enjoy. Your ideas on cooling down tents are very helpful. Hopefully I will be able to put them to use in the near future. Would like to be able to not have to depend on campsites for electricity, so the USB fan is a very interesting possibility. Worked with another traveling nurse who set up a "cooler" conditioner in his vehicle to sleep in in west Texas with some success. Good luck with your attempts. Perhaps a fairly high flow computer fan running off of USB for the "cooler" conditioner?

Just got back from Jellystone Water Park/ Camp grounds in Waller Tx. I brought along a 12,000 BTU AC unit to use in our ARB 2500 awning tent since it was forecasted to be 100/88 degrees on June 17-20. I've got to let yall know this worked out better that I thought it would during the day. the site was semi-shaded and our ARB awning acted as a barrier between the awning and top of the tent roof. Also I used 2 cheap 8×10 tarps velcroed to the awning frame and used retractable tent poles to extend shade as to keep the sun off the tents side walls...this also served as shade for a picnic table on one end and a shaded area for lounge chairs on the other. Ofcourse the ac did a great job keeping us cool at night but it was surprisingly stayed cool during the mid day (11-5)
the size of the room is 8×8 so its no wonder why it was able to do such a great job in such a small space. At times it was too cold and had to be raised. We also have a GFC rrt on our vehicle, and setup a small blower fan with exhaust tubing from inside the tent to the roof rack tent.....And it worked!

Been camping in Florida and actually brought a pedestal upright floor fan for the area where I sleep and a smaller fan that I put on the table in my "kitchen" area in 14 x 10 Ozark Trail tent. I also have come up with a canopy system using 3/4" EMT pipe and canopy fittings making what amounts to a framework of sorts and then laid a tarp over all of this and fastened it to the frame, I also left the rain fly off, an it definitely kept the heat from just beating down on the top of the tent and it actually helped at midday and definitely helped keep it nice at night

I have heard there is a better AC to use in the tent, but it is a bit more costly that has 2 vent hoses that run outside. I'm really tempted to try that some day in the future. Probably not 2021, but maybe 2022. We use these AC's too cool the garage down. And they get double duty on the tent.

It's easier to stay warm then cool, so I recommend cool weather camping. We have a Buddy Heater with a 10 foot propane hose and a 20 pound propane tank we set outside the tent. Hose runs through the door. We can keep the inside nice and toasty. My wife loves that heater. There's also less bugs when it's cooler outside.

I'm in San Antonio, TX and in the process of trying to do exactly this, but having issues.
My portable AC will only work when plugged straight into a suitable grounded wall socket. It can tell if there's even an extension cord in the way, and will just blow the fan and keep resetting. Thoughts?
It's important, I was just discharged from the hospital after 45 days from a GSW so need someplace to stay that's clean so I can heal... and it's 105 degrees outside!

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  Рік тому

First, this will not keep you cool during the day. The sun on the tent is just too much. As far as extension cords, you need a thicker gauge cord. They cost more, but you need it. I recommend a 12gauge extension cord, usually yellow.

It felt like the right time to talk about staying cool, when it's hot out. The AC doesn't work well in a tent when the sun is glaring down and it's 100. Maybe if it was a dry climate and in the shade. This is better suited for when the sun goes down, and it's humid and still 80 degrees. Then it will get the tent down to 60 something and nice and dry inside.

This AC is a RolliCool, I got off of Amazon. For this purpose, the brand doesn't matter as much, you just need a "Portable Air Conditioner." You can get them at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and Sam's. And make sure that when you get a tent site it has 20 amp or 110 electric hookups. And don't forget, it's almost useless during the hottest parts of the day, noon to the evening. So make sure you have an activity or some place to go so you can cool off. We prefer a lake or river we can get wet when it's so hot. The AC is mostly effective at bed time for getting the humidity out and making it a comfortable cool temperature.

Can anyone help me please. I have a portable ac I wanna take to our camp soon, but I don't know how to connect it to a 30amp connection that is available where we are going.
    Thanks!

Most campsites we've been to that show 30 amp hookups also have 2 of the typical 110 or what you're used to in your house. I'd be surprised to find a campsite that did not. If it absolutely does not, at Camping World they have adapters to adjust from 30 amp down to the normal 3 prong plug. What is the campsite where you will be using this, I can check to see if they do have the normal plug.

@@pamelacardona8022 I found a campground review for Point Lookout in Maryland and it says that the campsites have 30, 20 amp and 15 amp. Those lower numbers indicate the normal plugins like in your house.

I'm all for ACs in tents. Campers have ACs. If you can afford it & have a power source might as well.
I'm a whistleblower investigator blasting Epsteins Cronies the Cuomo brothers. Their Vermont partners in crime are making sure I don't have work comp cancer care or victims services (sequesteration) in a hotel. So, I am living in a tent in a park. I have a little USB fan. We have very mild summers. It's usually back in the 60s at night.
That said, you could insulate your tent with reflectix and moving blankets. That's how I keep warm in -40° wind chills. It would probably work for AC too. Put grommets in the moving blankets so they can hung up against the tent walls. The shape of the tent is going to be the determining factor for how you keep your insulation in place.

@@TexasFamilyCamping that is AWESOME!!! Gary has already seen a bear running across the road and a boar. He came home and said babe you're gonna be super jealous 🤣 Man was I!! I have wanted to see a bear for forever and still haven't. He could care less and got to see both🤣 Crazy that we have so many bears in FL never knew that till we moved here. They do a semi hibernation instead of a full hibernation with the weather.
