    Not to make you an Unhappy Camper but there are a lot of problems here. 1. Please don’t use those cords on trees, those will hurt trees. Straps are a better option. Here in Texas state parks “require” two inch straps but I’ve never been checked. 2. I went to the manufacturers website for specs and that hammock is listed as 115 inches long. I’m afraid that a 9 foot hammock is a lounging hammock and not a camping hammock. 3. To properly sleep in a hammock (and get those benefits to your back), you don’t lay in a hammock lengthwise, AKA “the banana”. You lay on a diagonal. This requires a properly sized and setup hammock. I don’t know your exact height but you’re definitely taller than me and the general rule of thumb for camping hammock lengths is to start around twice your height. Just from eyeballing I would say you have to be at least six feet tall so there is a good chance that you would need to be in a 12 foot hammock but regardless I think nothing under 11 feet for you. 4. You did pretty good with the Onetigris, I have one of those for loaner hammocks. 5. Proper hammock hanging is done at a 30 degree angle because as you approach zero (straight across) the forces you apply to the trees multiply. Your hang angle looked pretty good. A quick way to sloppily check your 30 degree hang is to make finger guns. The angle between the top of your thumb to the end of your index finger is about 30. 6. A good camping hammock will have a center ridgeline that maintains the proper hammock sag regardless of strap angle. To lay on the diagonal means your head is on the left or right of that ridgeline with your feet on the opposite side (to help you visualize). Off the top of my head 550 cord is the weight rating. When a hammock is advertised to support 400 to 500 pounds it is always made from basically taffeta nylon and are all more or less the same. Kammok, ENO, Wise Owl, etc. Good camping hammocks from cottage vendors are usually made from ripstop nylon and to get the weight rating you need you would probably need a double layer ripstop. If you want a good 11 or 12 foot hammock on a budget, try out a Onewind from their website or Amazon, all three of my loaners are from them. If you want to learn a lot more join us on hammock forums dot net and look up Shug Emery’s videos here on UA-cam. Or if you find yourself in the DFW area and want to go play with a lot of different hammock camping setups just holler. Hope you take this in the helpful spirit it was intended, I don’t want you to have a bad time from the wrong gear.

    Great tips.👍👍👍 BTW, I didnt notice your shirt until you pointed it out 😉 P.s, if you get a propane hose fuel filter, it will keep your heater from getting gummed up with the chemicals inside the hose.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping 4 місяці тому

      The filter isn't necessary when you use an official Mr Heater hose. Mr Heater doesn't use typical oils in their hoses like the other brands and per their official documentation, a filter isn't needed with their hoses. But highly recommended when using non-official hoses. Now it's also recommended to replace the Mr Heater hose more often, as those oils in hoses help with aging. So the official hoses will dry rot much faster. But, I can honestly say, I'm at about 4 years now and the same hose is still doing great, and no gummed up issues.

    • @JennBX1
      @JennBX1 4 місяці тому

    Excellent video, however Mr heater sells and highly recommends that you use the inline filter when using a hose and remote tank. Reason being that the hose interior breaks down and debris will ruin your heater.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping 8 місяців тому

      Per Mr. Heaters official documentation, the filter is only needed if using a hose of a different brand as they are made with oils that leach out and get into the heater. Mr Heater brand hoses do not use that oil in the production of the hose. However a replacement hose will need to be purchased more often because of the lack of those oils.

    41° isn't even worth bothering sparking up a heater where I live if you have a good sleeping bag system. I'm guessing you are down in Texas or some place that has no practical clue about deep cold. I live in northern Alberta, Canada and camp even in winter - Canadian winter - at -30°! With all that my-winter-is-colder-than-your-winter stuff out of the way, hypothermia is a risk even at +50°F if you are damp/wet and the wind comes up like on high country hikes. Fog, dew or light rain can be a real risk, but so can propane heaters like the "Buddy Heater" style heaters. When propane is burned, water vapour is created. There is enough vapour to make your clothing and bedding damp enough to not only make you miserable, but will increase the risk for hypothermia. Just thought I'd put that caution out there... I was nearly a fatality from hypothermia courtesy of my ignorance/inexperience as a young fella. Hypothermia is a sneaky thing and shivering is just the beginning; irrational thoughts and actions, listlessness and uncoordination, limbs heavy like lead are just a few signs. God bless and play safe from an Albertan neighbour.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping 9 місяців тому

      I would totally try camping at -30, BUT the rest of my family would not. The moisture from the burning propane can be felt on the tent itself, so we move in a bit to avoid touching the walls to stay dry.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping

      The beauty of the Buddy heater is that it dies if the oxygen level gets too low. It was designed to die at a higher level than what humans need. So if the heater uses up too much oxygen it shuts off before you die. This is why you need to have the windows on the tent ventes at least 18 inches to allow a continuous draw of fresh oxygen. I don't like being so hot so we had every window vented about 18 inches.

    Why don't hikers realize that they can take eggs and bacon on their hikes? Rub some mineral oil on a grocery store egg and it can last 6 months on the shelf and your pack is the same as a shelf, dummy. Shelf stable bacon is good for at least 6 months, who goes on 7 month hikes? Outdoor folks be stupid, most of the time, IMO. I stopped last night just before midnight in Waco, TX. I got much needed gas then asked an employee if it was okay to park overnight as I was falling asleep on the road. The young man informed me Quick Trio policy is no overnight parking. I told him my predicament. I told him I was surprised as all other QuickTrips have said yes and will tell you they prefer their customers pull in and sleep keeping them and others safe. This young man repeated his stance when I told him I was asking to be courteous instead of just parking but I did see a class C, a van and 2 cars overnighting in the parking lot. At this he started speaking louder, which was rather embarrassing, stating the policy again and that if I did he wouldn’t call the cops on me but couldn’t guarantee the next shift. I asked him even if it is a truck stop one like this store? He said it is for trucks only no other vehicles. I told him okay thank you. I will see how far further down the road I could go. This store is at S New Road and I-35 access on the southbound side.

      The positive is, it provides us with a potential last minute camping spot. The negative, if the money dries up the state might close the park. That's my fear. I hope you enjoy camping here in the fall.

    Site 96... Noted. Thanks for that! I've noticed a trend at TX state parks where the truly primo spots are non-electric.

      It might have to do with things like not wanting to run sewer and other utilities so close to the water. I've been noticing that trend all over the US. "You can park by the river with now sewer or across the street with full hook-ups."

      We didn't see any issues. We were there in January.

    I'm in San Antonio, TX and in the process of trying to do exactly this, but having issues. My portable AC will only work when plugged straight into a suitable grounded wall socket. It can tell if there's even an extension cord in the way, and will just blow the fan and keep resetting. Thoughts? It's important, I was just discharged from the hospital after 45 days from a GSW so need someplace to stay that's clean so I can heal... and it's 105 degrees outside!

      First, this will not keep you cool during the day. The sun on the tent is just too much. As far as extension cords, you need a thicker gauge cord. They cost more, but you need it. I recommend a 12gauge extension cord, usually yellow.

    For those who hate saying it’s not camping ask em “ya ever been on a cruise ship? Yes? Well why didn’t ya swim?” Ok fine mayyyyybe that’s going a little far, then how about “why didn’t you buy a sailboat and sail the whole way.” Why didn’t you drive? Or why did you drive when you coulda got there on a horse? It never stops. People need to chill n be happy outside period. Not everyone is the same. Not the same age, same health status, same weight same abilities, etc. Some got family coming some don’t. Just tell the haters “you do you and that’s it.” I just got a 13’ WD Regatta Bell Tent and it was HOT last week here in Cali at the lake. 106 in the shade is plenty hot for me. Evening time came and it cooled off some but still super hot in the tent with no fans or anything. Gonna fix that with either several fans for next trip next week or a swamp cooler or an AC unit. Haters be damned 😂it’s HOT this summer!!!

      And thanks for the video. I’d like to see your tent set up on a hot day, a measurement of the heat inside with the AC off and another with it on to show exactly how much that particular AC unit helps

      That does sound like an awesome video to run tests like that.

    Did you end up buying a unit with two hoses? If so, can you post the link?

    I have a 8000btu window unit for our tent and it works like a charm on those hot days in tx 😎 we even grab some blankies at night!😊

    Use a dual hose, portable AC in the tent. Won’t try to suck in and they’re way more efficient than single hose portables. If they are a heat pump they will have the dual hoses
