The band “Blizzard of Ozz” was destroyed by Sharon... too bad. Those first two albums (and only two) were incredible. I’m glad I was in high school at that time to have those vivid memories. RIP Randy and Lee... BEST solo and song is “Diary of a Madman” in my opinion. Such an incredible song from beginning to end!
It was all about keeping the Royalties. Studio musicians or hired guns dont get Royalties. Sharon does Not believe in Sharing at least not equally.
@@ricdale7813 No doubt that had he lived, Randy would have gotten screwed over as well. In fact, Sharon even tried to change his contract after he died - according to his family. Evil witch.
After all wasnt the main thing Lee getting fired that they wanted and had a chance to get Tommy Aldridge in the band. The other had to go. As Bob then raised his voice he got fired as well. There really wasnt much of a audition for Rudy as Randy just said he could do the job. But the thing that Lee didnt get along is more of they already had another player. And as Bob came to play on Bark at the Moon band live it cant really be a age issue. As he helped them out all the way up to No More Tears.
The decision was actually made by Don Arden and not Sharon
@@MorryB That's True! Randy's siblings get absolutely none of his royalties. From what I know... Randy's mom actually turned down his royalties cause she considered it blood money. I guess by default or somehow in court Sharon ended up with the rights to everything Randy did for Ozz which is why we'll never hear all the stuff Bob Daisley has with Randy. Also why Sharon was able to squash the movie that was made about Randy by Peter Margolis, and why we'll likely never see any of the professionally filmed shows she absolutely has that were mainly filmed on the Diary tour.
The first two Ozzy Solo albums are nearest and dearest to my heart!! Love 'em! Wish Randy was still here...

All the Blizzard Of Ozz crew/member interviews are so good. Yeah, when the first album came out, it wasn't that huge, right away. Ozzy played a 3000 seater in my hometown Cleveland. Same place any other new artist with one big hit would play. For former Black Sabbath singer, was intimate venue.

Whenever I saw Max's name on a record I bought it. Nothing sounded like Diary when it came out, it was groundbreaking. Then came Rust In Peace, which also redefined the sound of metal.
I think that was Mike Clink. Maybe Max mixed it...

I worked for Jet Records during these recordings. I loved Randy Rhodes lovely guy hugley talented and great work ethic. His girlfriend was with him most of the time. She was lovely parents owned hotels. I was there for tree and a half years and learnt alot and had a lot of input, Happy days
Also watching this for the second time. How humble is Max? "Well it was a great studio and great mics and a great board. And if you have a great drummer... " AND a great sound engineer, Max! Thank you for recording this music that was so impactful I can't even think of a way to explain it. Thank you!

Savatage Power of the Night was the best . Had the eerieness of Diary of a madman..plus Max mixed Fates Warning No Exit. He rules...He also did a band from Detroit called Vendetta in 1982

We, all the fans, should make a compliment to guys such as Max Norman...
Please don't give Ozzy a break on the whole "screwing over" thing and believe it was only Sharon and Don doing the dirty work. He knew good and well what was happening at all points in time. Ozzy is a dude that rode the coat tails of several iconic musicians and writers and made himself into a brand and a rock icon. Can't play an instrument, can't write riffs, can't sing, doesn't contribute much to any album other than scatting a few melodies (which were usually sung "along with the riff" rather than ride on top of the riff or be separate from the riff. Think Iron Man, Electric Funeral, NIB, Crazy Train, Mr Crowley, etc.....) Icon my ass.

I'm a fan! I love his Megadeth years! 🤘🏻 Max have an amazing taste in production. Great editor, engenier and producer! What he did with "Countdon to extiction" and "Youthanasia" and "Angry Again" and "99 ways to die", I'm Thankfull forever. He made it so great! Mustaine is very talent, but Max understood the way to make it greater. I wish Dave could enjoy that partnership again. Marco from Brazil.

Excellent job.
“You Looking at Me, Looking at You” was recorded during the BOO recording sessions but dropped in favor of No Bone Movies which was recorded as an intended non-LP B-side after the rest of the songs and after Randy went back to the US briefly for a Quiet Riot reunion. “You Said It All”, as Max mentioned, was recorded in Southampton and Bob gives some details in his great book. Both are great tracks. “YLAMLAY” exists in 3 mixes:
-The original 1980 7” UK Crazy Train B-side mix (no cowbell).
-A different mix that was released in 1984 and 1985 in Japan with a cowbell in the chorus and the guitars mixed differently and the outro guitar riff coming in at a different time. Not quite as heavy sounding of a mix as the 7”.
Which of those 2 mixes were supposed to originally be on the album? Were both mixes done and available for the album before the song was dropped?
-3rd mix: the 2002 version with Bob and Lee erased and replaced.
Good interview and I really appreciate the opportunity to hear the stories. However, please don't interrupt the guest too much with unknown ramblings, let him talk freely. A good example is the interview "DEF LEPPARD - Gear Historia with Vivian Campbell" which really gives the guest a lot of air. You might want to intervene with a couple of comments, but for the most part, let the guest talk. Thanks!

Excellent interview and great questions. You guys did amazing. This man is a master and bang on about recording. I approached this method when he talked about leaving mistakes and moving on. Working on instincts and fast is great way to get results. Diary and blizzard are classic and ozzy never got to that level ever again.

Ozzy was seeing things. Randy was found outside the garage, the Randy Rhoads book documents it and interview from the officer Mike Smalt. He was the only one that was outside the burning garage.

This is absolutely amazing.
Tribute is mostly Cleveland solo is Montreal. No bone movies and goodbye to romance was in Southampton same show the Mr Crowley EP was recorded. The rest of the show is stilled locked in a vault.
Max fixed Randy in two spots on Tribute both times on crazy train. The power chord slide on the intro his first chord is off by a fret. The solo he also begins by tapping a fret too low.
If you're bored on a Sunday the sound boards for Montreal and Cleveland can be found to verify this.
Max is a legend. I've read Rudy's book, Bob's book and Ozzy's. Bobs account of the events during that time is the only one that lines up spot on with the all the dates recordings and live shows I could find. For facts sakes is an excellent account this time period.

First 11 tracks: from NBC The Source, Cleveland May 11, 1981, except guitar solo is from King Biscuit Flower Hour Montreal July 28, 1981.
Goodbye to Romance and No Bone Movies: Southampton October 2, 1980.
Max has never recalled using both Cleveland and Montreal in any of the interviews I’ve seen and has always said it was two tapes of the same show. Somehow multiple shows were used and I always wondered why most of Cleveland was chosen for the bulk instead of Montreal. Maybe what he said about the guitar sound and level had something to do with the choices and provides some insight. Montreal definitely has a different guitar tone. I prefer his playing on Montreal as well. Sounds like he mentions a tape from the Midwest. Maybe he also had the Indianapolis August 1981 multitrack to chose from that made up most, but not all, of the Ozzy Live bonus disc.

I bought Tribute on vinyl in 1987 and interestingly, there was a sticker on the shrink film cover (which I still have) that said the album was recorded in Canada! I think by now, fans know that most of the songs were actually taken from the King Biscuit show in Cleveland, as mentioned in this interview.
I always wondered why they claimed it was Canada, even in magazines, when only the guitar solo is from Montreal. The Cleveland show was actually recorded and broadcasted by NBC The Source. The King Biscuit Flower Hour recorded and broadcasted the Montreal Canada show and Randy’s playing was unreal. I was always disappointed they didn’t use the Montreal show but at least the full show is available and without any performance overdubs.
Gary Moore was up with helping to set up auditions/finding musicians etc. However, Dana Strum (Slaughter) was involved and did the auditions thing with/for Ozzy. It was he who knew about Randy and brought him in. It was Dana who set up the audition with Ozzy (pretty much by force and persistance. Ozzy had pissed in his pants then too. There's a great video with Dana Strum telling the whole story, check it. Great Ozzy impersonation in it.). Apparently, according to many comments, including Mike Slaughter, Dana also brought in Jake E. Lee, but I'd still need to hear it from Dana or Jake.
Most people say BOO and DOAM had the best songs and everyone agrees on Randy's talent.
However, Jake was no less of a guitarist. His live performances showed he was actually more advanced than Randy in that setting, that genre, although Jake also has a diverse background and heavy metal not being his "home base" either. Extremely good at improvisation and in his own way he was also good at composition and also a distinctive style and outside-the-box playing.
So both Randy and Jake were instrumental (pun intended) in making Ozzy big and carrying/flying Ozzy over the abyss that Ozzy himself and his life otherwise was.
When Zakk came in the whole OsbourneInc. locomotive and train was already fully in motion no uphill anymore (BOO band w/Randy building the train from scratch and getting steam running, Jake made the train go uphill the mountain where it could have stopped or crashed).

Max's work on Death Angel's Act III is top drawer, the guitar tone is killer, and for a thrash album has a lot of nuances to it. Same with the Malice album License to Kill, that album should have been a success, it sounded excellent.

Regarding the intro to Mr. Crowley, check out the instrumental called "Angel (Theme)" from the debut album by the band Angel (1975). Makes you wonder if Randy may have even suggested it to Don Airey, since Angel would have been very well known to Randy from his time in LA. There are lots of parts on those two albums that seemed lifted from other artists, and even Ozzy admitted they stole a lot of things.
I heard Bob Daisley say in an interview today that the intro was done by another keyboard player ,then when Don came into the band he just added a few minor things to it

@@jasonhudson5357 Bill Hunt was the keyboard player that auditioned for the band and came up with the basics of the Mr. Crowley intro. Don Airey refined it to what we know today.
It's funny that he says that Blizzard was dated by 1980. I guess that's the bias of Heavy Metal being a 70's phenomenon, that it kind of died with John Bonham and Bon Scott. The music journalists certainly thought it was. But then came the resurgence of NWOBHM, and a few years later came Guns n Roses.
People forget that Sharon bought Randy’s rights from his mom after he died. Sharon is “Randy Rhoads”, so there will never be a Randy movie without Sharon’s involvement. Let alone that she owns the music too.

I would love one starting where he talks about randy triple tracking and ending with how ozzy doubles his vocs 1 line at a time. I need to show this to my band mates I'm sick of arguing haha

I wonder how good the solo is on that 1980 Southampton show. Randy's playing is powerful in that show.
There was mention of the feel of the song "DIARY OF A MADMAN" and to my ear, you must begin that song with "S.A.T.O." in order to "travel that journey" you speak of! (Just saying) it works so much that song in the next, I think that must've been planned, because if not it's just another serendipitous thing!! Amaze-ballz!!🤘

Diary is a good song.. but man.. it was S.A.T.O. & You can't kill Rockn roll that made me just love the Diary album a bit more

Great interview. What a career he's had! There's so many better recordings they could have used for the Tribute album it's crazy. Why they only gave him a second generation tape of a show that was good but far from the best I'll never know.
That was hilarious with his recollection of Speak of the devil. Loved hearing about it though cause I was lucky enough to be there at the Ritz when I was 17. Thank you for keeping Randy's memory and legacy alive. It's a travesty that all they've released footage wise is part of the palladium show when there's so much more!

All you have to do is listen to 5-11-81 and the Montreal gig and you know exactly what is said is true. It’s Cleveland with the Montreal solo dropped into it. It’s kind of annoying to listen to these guys fumbling through that. It’s been documented to death.
Maybe someone else edited it that way and gave it to Max on one tape and he didn’t know. I doubt it - he probably just doesn’t remember.
The messed up solo also is actually “Crazy Train.” Just have to listen to the 5-11-81 bootleg to hear what he fixed.
Vocals were redone as well. That must have been a trip for Ozzy to be singing “with” Randy one more time. Would have been one of the first things I would have asked about. He sang great on that.
Max mentioned in an interview that they had 2 tapes of the same show, so I figure he was referring to Cleveland and Montreal because the original shows have the same track order and track list, but I’ve never heard him say how they decided what to use between the 2 shows.

What’s really sad is how Sharon screwed the musicians that made Ozzy. Only days after Randy died she changed his contract so him family couldn’t get any of his royalties. Randy’s mom Dee had to sue them to get what the family deserved. Sharon also screwed Bob and Lee on those albums. Then she screwed Jake on Bark at the Moon. There are countless stories of her robing musicians of their own work and just being a complete POS.

I’m late to this, but is there any discussion anywhere (straight from Max Norman) about what was done to Randy’s tone for the Tribute album? Was Randy’s track re-recorded through a different cabinet? Re-EQd? It’s a great tone, and so different from the live bootlegs.
I always wondered why the guitar tone is so different vs the original Cleveland broadcast. The same thing happened with the guitar tone on the Montreal “Flying High Again” that appeared on the Ozzy Live bonus CD. It’s drier and not as big as the original. My guess is that they used a direct line track and not the miked track so there’s not the bleed-through of the original vocal track. Just a guess.

Apparently Randy split his guitar sound through a MXR Stereo Chorus that fed two independent tape delay units (a Roland Space Echo and a Korg similar unit) that each went to its own Marshal head (black one and white one). That's the full stereo chorused sound you hear on both Cleveland and Montreal broadcasts. I'm *guessing* Mr Nornan used just one side of this for the Tribute album mix (panned slightly right of center) which renders the chorusing effect void and makes guitar sound drier and more direct. But again, I'm just guessing here!
I'm guessing he just took one output of Randy's live stereo spread, to make the guitar drier and more focused on Tribute (maybe?). Interestingly, the album that *does* indeed have Randy's tracks re-amped and re-mic-ed is Quiet Riot "The Randy Rhoads Years" on which Kevin DuBrow (as told by himself in a contemporary interview) ran the guitar tracks through Carlos Cavazo's Marshalls to update his 70's tone to Ozzy-era standards.

The solo section in Suicide Solution on Tribute is from a different gig to the song, I have an original bootleg from the gig and the solo is different to the version on the album…
Main source for Tribute is Cleveland May '81 (NBC broadcast) with new studio vocals recorded by Ozzy, except the solo spot which comes from Montreal July '81 (King Biscuit Flower Hour radio broadcast). And of course, the bonus Bob & Lee tracks come from UK Southampton '80.-
