The original Dreamcast version also had some DLC so it could have something to do with that. In all likelyhood it's leftover code that isn't meant to be triggered in the modern rereleases, but because it's a port of a port of a port, tje code doesn't really care

It’s not actually drm in this case. It’s just simply failing to connect to the leaderboards for some reason at that moment.

and this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you play the game with mods that fix the game, because you randomly run into a text box letting you know it needs an internet connection, when you know thats not true, BECAUSE THIS CAME CAME OUT IN 2001.
