The Fall Of The Roman Empire would have been a better picture with Charlton Heston in the lead role, but Sophia Lauren was the female lead, so he didn't want to do it.
This story is just another example of what happens when personalities collide. There are numerous other examples. One of my favorites is the friction that developed between Anthony Quinn and Anna Magnani during the filming of the movie The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969). It was no secret these two stars hated each other. Unlike in the movie El Cid, director Stanley Kramer worked that animosity into the script. Watch the movie, the fight scene between Quinn and Magnani was not rehearsed! Those two really went at each other! She broke her foot kicking him and she really bit him! lol Many will disagree with me, but as much as I liked Heston as an actor I felt he was the wrong choice for El Cid. He was too reserved for the role. It should have gone to someone like Ricardo Montalban. I know, the studio wanted a big name. Oh well.
My favourite film of all time, probably because my mum and dad took me to see it when I was 7. Loved Sohhia and Charlton ever since. Found out recently that the Valencia beach and battle scenes were filmed at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.....Why Aye Man!! lol
very odd i think it caught him by surprise. As i recall since the film portrayed El cid's relationship with his wife from the beginning as conflicted due to political issues I did not notice anything off between them attributable to personal issues. Sometimes people just have what is called "bad chemistry" He was a consummate gentleman so it is surprising but sounds as if they both kept it to questions about the production. Not like him at all so I have to question what role she played in this drama. I have impression she got into with grant but frankly in that situation I felt she was in the right.
El Cid was ass. Loved so many Heston movies (10 commandments, Ben hur, Soylent green) so was so disappointed when I saw it. Fall of the Roman Empire is a much better tho Heston-less film
Sofia was no where as high as Heston was worldwide, men got the respect back in those days, women were just decorations, and she was a terrible actress in all her films outside of Italy.
Never should have been an actor he should have realised Close contact with women As the script dictates would cause friction as a married man he should have known Better!
Maybe you knew him personally but to me he was a great actor who made monumental epic movies that people still watch today. His only low point in my opinion was playing in "Friends".
Whatever she might have wanted, Charlton Heston had top billing, which was very very important at the time for both of them.

It is too bad that was their relationship, but when you can descend/ascend a staircase like Loren, be a gentleman and let her be ...
Intelligent men don't suffer fools gladly and she was a fool!!

Sounds like both were too caught up in their egos.
Heston was a legend. Sophia Loren incredibly beautiful. I guess friction would ensue.

Assuming these complaints are true, it seems to me, he preferred and actress more feminine and less assertive.
Sorry, not really finding this very believable probably just superficially and blown out of proportion.
Boring padding, made to accommodate advertisements

I believe that El Cid would have been much better without Loren.
When you have a woman of equal or maybe higher status on board, look out.

HESTON WAS A BORE !
Hardly a bore, what this video proves. By the way, the two remained friends for the rest his life.

If Heston was alive today he would be a boring MAGAT.
