MARKER TRAINING WITH YOUR DOG
Remember, this is also engagement training. You are paying your dog for focusing their attention on you. So during this exercise, you are teaching your dog a few things. You are teaching them the communication channels, and you are teaching them that it's a good thing to look at you. The exercise goes as follows: you get the dog’s attention, and once the dog is looking at you, you use your continuation-marker, and then you deliver the reward. Once your dog eats the reward and looks back at you, you are going to use your terminal-marker and move away from your dog, encouraging your dog to come and get the reward. You will continue to do sessions of this exercise until your dog is conditioned to these two markers.
Be sure to check out all the other dog training videos on my channel. You will learn how to train your dog to sit, down, come, heel, stay, and much more. One of the most common questions I receive is how to potty train a dog. Well, guess what, we have that video as well. Not to mention how to crate train a dog and even service dog training.

This was so hard in the beginning but wow! It pays to work hard to get the results you want with your best friend aka your dog😄
Thank you so much! I'm happy the videos have been so helpful. :)
Well, I just stated this with my GSD at 2am in our kitchen lol. He did very well and picked up on the eye contact very fast. I was super impressed with him. Tomorrow morning we will try on our morning walk. 😊
Almost a one month update- GSD has his engagement down pat ❤️

Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy the videos are helping! :)
All this time and I've never seen this video until today when someone else was looking for it.
I guess you cover engagement in a lot of videos 😁
Lol! Yup, it's such an important step that it deserves a few episodes. :)
Hey Nate! It was nice meeting you this evening. As promised, I'm starting at the beginning. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions to leave in comments as I progress.
Awesome! It was great meeting you as well!
Hi. Your teaching dog training is magnificent and it is extremely extraordinary. It is impressed me a lot. Tq.
You are so kind. Thank you and thank you for supporting the channel. :)
Thank you wonderful video, people who do not know how to train often miss this.
Loved the video !!! But quick question how would I teach “break” I understand both “yes” and “free” but how would I implement “break”

My Saluk is coming home in September, she will be 10 weeks old and I’ll have to train her so this will help a lot!
Awesome! I'm sure you'll do great! :)
Very impressive! I love your videos and training methods.
great work and instructions here! very late to comment, but im curious if you've ever experimented with rewarding from the mouth (alot of competition dog owners use the method to get attention to their face) where you use ham/cheese/etc in your mouth while training and deliver by dropping it for the dog
Thanks! Putting food in your mouth to get your dog to look at your face is 100% not necessary. You can get them to look at your face without doing that. Here's a video that goes into even more detail on how to do that. Cheers! Jump to 8:50 ua-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/v-deo.html
Definitely practicing this, engagement helps a lot keeping my dog focused on me.
Awesome! I'm happy it helpful and thanks for commenting! :)
He loves his dogs so much he skips leg day to train them jk jk
Haha!
Hi Nate how can I incorporate a clicker into your training? My boy has a short attention span but I feel that's my fault just practising with your videos now as you seem really good and I enjoy your videos
Use it as a marker, the same way I use Yes and Free. Just pick if you want it to be a continuation marker or a terminal marker.
Continuation marker = Reward.
Terminal Marker = Release and reward.
what is a terminal marker? I that a release cue?
Hi Nate! Becoming a dog trainer here using engagement based training. I assume I'll run into clients who don't want to feed by hand for a number of reasons. If after encouraging them to be willing to try, if they still do not want to, how crucial is this and in addition to at least general correct placement location on floor ( i.e. side, front, etc) any suggestions re this? TIA!
@@CamilleGG451 If they don’t want to use food to motivate the dog, then you can try to use toys and praise, but it can be significantly more difficult to get precision. In addition, you can use leash pressure training to help guide the dog into the correct positions, which is often enough for basic obedience. Hope this helps. Cheers!
@@NateSchoemer Thanks Nate! I just meant if they don't want the dog taking the treat directly from their hand, how much less impactful is it if the treat's placed on the floor instead?
Out of curiosity, it was mentioned that it’s with treats. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? It looks like they are being utilized.
When just starting out, is it normal for my gsd to not be able to look at me for 5 seconds before either getting bored or distracted?? We've been at it for a few days now and there has been some improvement but pretty marginal at best. This dog in the video seems to already have the training down or is just simply a natural. Would have liked to see the training demo'd with a dog didn't already know the drill.
Question is, how much treats can you give a pup in a day? This is underestimated in the dog world
Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/cS4akcOR6Oo/v-deo.html
Should I use the dog's name to call it's attention?
Yes, you can or you can make a random interesting noise. Either is fine. This video I talk more on getting the dogs attention when teaching this exercise: ua-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/v-deo.html I hope this helps!
How often should someone do this? For how long?
Most dogs will learn this within 1-3 days. Two sessions a day. Once conditioned it's worthwhile to do 30 seconds or so of this before each session. It gets the dog more engaged and as a side effect, they learn faster. Check out this video where I go into more detail: ua-cam.com/video/XQRgci18tvY/v-deo.html
What really is a terminal marker
Is this just a regular exercise?
This is what I do with every dog before I start the formal training. It's important to be able to communicate with our dogs in a clear manner. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
How old is the pup here?
She was around 1 year or so when I filmed this.
My dog doesn't care for treats, how can I work around this?
Use its food to train him wait until he’s hungry
High value foods they can eat, the dogs food (use his meal) or toys! just make the training super fun for the dog
