This was sick! its always something ive wanted to do but felt like it was more of like "maybe one day, seems super hard" but you just went out and did it! super cool and informative vids man keep em coming
Thanks a bunch!! And same! It felt like so long since I started collecting stuff, but it’s so much fun to play with live here in my bedroom... can’t wait to hit the stage again!
Do what you’re doing and watch as many videos and read as many forums online regarding the equipment you plan to use! Planning is everything and will help make sure the equipment you need works together, at will make more sense as you go 👌🏼
Hey! Thanks for watching and great question. The foundation of this is the exact same as to what I use now. The only changes are that I took out the rack tuner and the reverb pedal and squeezed the rest into a 4U case. I reintroduced the tuner by mounting a polytune mini vertically using an L bracket on the pedal rack with the hx stomp and darkglass element.
I wish there was an amp that had built in slots for like 3 racks. It could be such a cool customizeable amp, and if it started with a good base tube amp…maybe I’ll build one.
Thank you!! I actually down sized to a 4 unit but same idea as this video and I absolutely love it. I always felt like my rig could get better and better but I think this kinda solved every minor problem or inconvenience I faced with previous rig ideas. Loading and packing us much easier and so is set up and tear down.
Do you ever get any fan noise from the PS700? I've got this high pitch noise that i cannot figure out how to get rid of and its only when the fan comes on
Ahh sorry to hear that man. I do hear the fan turn on with mine but I wouldn’t describe it as a high pitch noise. I will occasionally get an air duster and clean out the fan area from time to time. I’m not too sure what could be causing that high pitch noise. If you bought it new, I’d recommend getting warranty on it or getting it replaced just to be sure it will hold up. I’ve luckily only had to buy one unit and it has been running great for me for the last few years now.
Hey man! Thx for the video I was looking for a similar setup and I was doubting in between the 8u or the 6u … now, thx to your video I’m sure that 6u is enough! Thx 🙏🏻
Thanks for the comment! Glad you got something out of it. I was actually able to condense this idea into a 4U rack case and I’ve been using that ever since 🤘🏼
Does the dark glass pedal change the sound of your cab? In a show setting, would you have the sound person plug their di into the dark glass pedal instead of on the bass head? Everything looks dope
Thanks for the comment! No, in the context I'm using the Darkglass in, the pedal will not change the sound coming out of my cab on stage. It will change the sound coming out of the PA because I am sending the PA the cab sim effect from the darkglass and bypassing the darkglass via the unaffected 1/4" output on the pedal, which goes into the PS700. I do not need to send the PS700 the cab sim signal because it is going through the real cab I have on stage. And yes, I have the sound guy plug into the darkglass XLR output, which I have connected to a patchbay I put together on the backside of the rack. :) Hope this helps!
this is so rad, thank you! i wanna combine a rack or make two (for my guitar and bass) - can you do one like that? i only use 4 pedals for my guitar that are always on (minus OD/Clean switching)- bass would be no pedals other than if i could get a compressor rack or something to beef up my bass sound (raunchy with treble boost)
Sounds sick! It’s totally possible, but rack space and depth is one thing you’ll really need to study. This rack is a shallow one and they do sell deeper racks, so just finding out what shelves and rack cases would fit your project would be one of the trickiest parts aside from routing cables but definitely could work out with the right planning 👌🏼👌🏼
Honestly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought! In the users manual of the stomp, each function has a little code. In the MIDI commander, you assign that code in a “user presets” setting for a specific button and that’s about it!
I feel that, the hx stomp is great! Mine is still going strong to this day as well as my whole little rack unit. You’ll get the hang of it, don’t worry!
Seeing how compact it is makes me rethink if I should use a rack rig instead of a conventional tube head? I just got a vintage Mesa Studio Preamp and Crest 4801 power amp for my Nirvana collection and the reason I ended up here was to check out a rack case lol
Thanks for watching! I actually was able to fit what I needed in a 4U rack so this set up got even more compact! It definitely works for me and I just pull up to a gig with my case/bass, rack and cab. I throw the midi commander in my gig bag so everything I need is pretty condensed!
Thank you so much!!! It does get REALLY hot if it’s on for a long time, but no major issues! And yes it takes up 4 holes on the rack which is exactly 1 and 1/3 units… very weird and quite the headache for planning a build lol
Hey dood great video for us who’ve never done this, I’m building my first too, I have monster Mesa boogie 2x100 rectified stereo power amp, helix rack …getting a pitch black as well since watching this, a 1u sliding shelf with a few pedals and maybe synergy syn 1 with engl savage or soldano slo ..took awhile to aquire …still waiting for helix ..great you did this .. so on the back of the screws there’s no nut the fasten to?
Ooo fancy! Sounds great! No, you don’t need a nut on the rack screws to safely secure your units. They come with plastic washers that really help keep them tight 👍🏼
Nick this video was sick! Got me super hype for moving towards a rack system and the set-up was really well explained. Where did you get the drawer for the pedals?
Hell yea! I actually was able to size down to a 4U and I absolutely love it! I got the rack drawer on infinatecables.com. This was the first time using them. The rack dimensions were off from the website (it’s fixed now) and I let them know and they actually refunded me in full and let me keep the drawer. The title of the item is: 19 inch 4-Post Sliding Vented Shelf - 13.75 inch Depth - 1U Thanks for watching!
Awesome video man! I really enjoyed it!! Quick question Nick, can you use ALL of the Midi Commander's Foot Switches to control individual Blocks on the Hx Stomp? All of the videos I've watched about the Midi Commander seem to show the top row as "Stomp Mode" and the bottom row as "Preset Mode", but I have no Idea if you can use both rows to control "Stomps". I'm looking for a Midi Controller for my Hx Stomp, but I'd like to use it as if I had a "traditional" Pedalboard in front of me. Thanks for the videos man! Keep up the GREAT work!
Thank you! I believe you can set up all switches on the midi commander to switch whatever you’d like. I currently have the 4/E switch on the top right of the pedal to go to my tuner on the stomp. I use this as a kill switch as well. From my understanding you just assign each switch a specific command and the controller will go there when engaged. I had no previous midi programming experience before getting the midi commander and it was really easy to program in my opinion!
It's every bass player's dream to have their entire setup in a rack. My amp is actually rack mountable and only takes up one half of a rack unit so, I'm going to have my sansamp and compressor on the other half of the ru, underneath I'll use a midi controlled loop switcher (I'm thinking about the Voodoo Lab Hex) and have a cable running to a controller on the floor. Then I'll be able to carry a pedal board, rack, cab, and bass
I mean if you use a truck the way it was intended to be used, you’re definitely gonna get some scratches in it. But yes a jackass scratching it wouldn’t be a fun time lol

Thank you!
Very interesting to see the whole process, thank you!
Of course! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so cool. I'm needing something like this now. Thanks for sharing.
Of course! This is all I use for both bass and guitar now. It’s still holding up 👌🏼
Great video! Im most definitely inspired as a bass player to build me a rack
Thanks! I downsized to a 4U rack but still going strong with a very similar setup. It’s extremely efficient and reliable!
Any advice on how to “get into” rack gear? Like I want to learn how to make a rack or how it would even be useful but idk where to start.

Cool - thanks for the video dude. 2 years later, is there anything you would have done differently with the build?

very cool rig there my dude.
Thank you!
Cool vid, bro. I know tfw you're gearing up to build a beastly rack rig! I'm putting together my Fractal rig right now.
NICE!!!!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I learned a few things here including panel-mounted rack unit for pass through cabling.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you could take something from it :)
This is awesome! Where did you find those ear racks?
Thanks! The ear racks came with the powerstage but I believe you can find some aftermarket ones on reverb.
Was it difficult to connect that foot controller to the stomp?
Honestly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought! In the users manual of the stomp, each function has a little code. In the MIDI commander, you assign that code in a “user presets” setting for a specific button and that’s about it!
@@SanacNick awesome thanks for the info I had no idea. Do you think it would work with the other line 6 helix line of products?

Yes they do :)

Having any issues with your Powerstage overheating where it is? And it takes up exactly 1.5 U of rack space? Weird.

Check out the Sansamp RBI. It's the rack mount version of the bass driver pedal. Could be helpful.
