A running joke as a music student was describing all 20th century French organ music as: start semi-tonal/chromatic harmony, progressively abandon all tonality, lean on keyboard, C major chord.
My gosh. Even the recording leaps right out at you. If Latry's wife covers her ears when the chamades enter I can only imagine what it must have been like in person
I remember being on the tribune of Notre Dame couple of years ago (I was sitting on the floor, right behind Olivier Latry), and the sound was very loud, but also very pleasant to the ear at the same time, even with all the chamades turned on :)
Like professional DJ´s or people who work at clubs one really has to protect oneself for eardamage.....and she only started to cover her ear when he used the chamades I must add :)
Hi - The answer is no. Professional recording in Notre-Dame is heavily controlled, even more during masses ! It's much easier when I record my 17th century organ. Anyway, I was using two Neuman TLM50 mics (5000 Euro ea) but really too close from the organ. This video was posted with my friend Olivier Latry's authorization. Rgrds.
BRILLIANT playing, and I love the recording. It's immediate and powerful and you get the full attack of the chamades. There is no criticizing this video recording...except for the girl in the corner plugging her ears, to the left in the video. She's in the wrong organ loft if she needs to do that!
No doubt. Your statement is very true and logical and I agree 100%...especially your attention to the upper registers. The other side of the coin though, I've been to enough rock concerts, I pretty much know "loud" too. When you have some of the most powerful musical instruments ever conceived by mankind in all of history...and they're still acoustical, sometimes you just gotta say "screw it -- open 'er up and let 'er rip"!!! I have no problem with that! :)
@@henrikheikkinen Oh gosh, I thought the same; how time flies! As of April 2024 we're waiting and waiting to hear it again, hopefully by the end of this year. I for one hope that M Latry won't be toooo gentle with it though...
Like professional DJ´s or people who work at clubs one really has to protect oneself for eardamage.....and she only started to cover her ear when he used the chamades I must add :)
This video was recorded when the organ still had it's old console, but yeah Olivier remains a great organist, wouldn't mind to shake his hand and play his organ one day again
Not necessarily. There is obviously a degree of individuality to sensitivity to sound. Some may find the intense power in the trebles of these chamades more uncomfortable than others. Also, the younger you are, the greater perception you have to very high harmonics. You gradually lose this as you get older. Please also remember, in the organ loft at NDdeP, when all chamades are used, the sound is extremely loud and intense. It is not comfortable, to say the least.
It's very loud, and penetrating in the upper registers. It is uncomfortable, certainly when all five chamades are being used. Also, whether you regard such penetrating and intense sound, particuarly in the treble, as 'music', is a question worth asking. Personally, I would be more selective in their use. The old proverb still stands: less is more.
Latry, one of the greatest improvisers on the organ, often has me wondering what kind of God he thinks he’s portraying during mass. From my perspective it’s often a portrait of a cruel, neurotic, unpredictable and sadistic deity, which if you think about it, isn’t too far from the message we get from the Bible.
You said it right: FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE. Not from everyone else. Some people hate Picasso and some people pay 200 million for it. Always remember that.
It is the God from Psalms, for example Ps 29(28) Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!" The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
No wait......just a noise TO YOU. To you. Don't assume everyone thinks the same as you. Don't assume everyone else on this planet likes your softass relaxmusic.
Totally EVIL and wicked.....totally STUNNING...I love the lady plugging her ears at the end, make me think of the old adage, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen!!!!
Some people hate Picasso and some people pay 200 million for it. Always remember that. You might like potatoes but other people hate it. Art can only be interpreted. We cannot make rules about what is beautifull or not. Some might say stormy weather is ugly.....other people see the majesty of God in it with awe and inspiration. Always remember that.
Latry's wholetone scale polytonality gets predictable after not too many progressions. If he counted beats he could control the formal construction better, too And, yes, I do what he is trying to..
This reminds me of what my first composition teacher told me, "You can do whatever you want; so long as you end on a triad, the people will be happy."

LATRY est une organise et improvisateur extraordinaire, vraiment... une source d'inspiration.
Hey Sam! haha.

Latry is absolutely amazing. He conquers large Organs and masters the music he plays from memory. Awesome!
Simply astonishing and great.
that was totally amazing , wild , exciting improvisation !!!
Fantastic! I love this rhythmic style of imrpovisation so much. In some cases he reminds me on Stravinsky..
I believe that the woman plugging her ears is actually Latry's wife, Shin-Young Lee. At least, she bears some resemblance.
Like professional DJ´s or people who work at clubs one really has to protect oneself for eardamage.....and she only started to cover her ear when he used the chamades I must add :)
Bravooooooooooooooo ! Puissante et brillante improvisation !
M. Olivier Latry, revenez, svp, à Marseille ou à Roquevaire !
Merci
Words leave me! Simply breathtaking!!
What an intense thrill ride this improvisation is. Stellar musician!
Waaaaw..that was super..please..more and more Latry´s improvisation´s and improvisation´s ND organists.....Thank you
one of the best improvisation I have ever heard !
You have not heard very many then.
SUPER!!!!!!
The organ really is the King of all instruments, Watching him play is a bonus, but credit of course to this composer
FYI The player is the composer! He's improvising in real time.
This really brings out the organ a lot
Holy shit that was awesome 0__0;
No - it was just a mash of notes
Oliver is typing a letter :p I do enjoy his adventurous style though!
I LOVE THIS!
Great improviser
100% agreed!!
Great job I wish I could do that!
...fantastique

Philippe Lecossais Id love to hear the audio separately! I used a Roland unit when I visited Notre Dame and Lefébure played
Genius!

Bravo Maestro!
Hahaha, woman in background at 3:27 Hahaha. Nice impro.
Love it
Good thing I wasn't there, I would totally lose it.

A pure genius, improvisation at its best!!
mouai pour un neophyte comme moi sa sonne vraiment pas terrible on dirait de l experimental
ou un gars sous crack
Is the organ okay?
Probably. Is the building OK? I'm not really sure.
Miraculously, unbelievably, it seems yes! But it will be years before we hear it again.
I first thought that is the organ okay after that wild improvisation...

Ha, ha. I caught that too. Guess she found out she was getting a little more than she bargained for! Can't imagine how this must sound in person.

I would probably be wearing hi-fidelity earplugs if I were in that loft (I wear then when I play if the console is near the pipework).
Musically wondrous but theologically questionable.
